I hate to be nitpicky again, but didn't Backlund still defend the title around the country during the supposed "held up" period? So I think the title was really only disputed in New York so the WWF could make money around the horn with Backlund.

Of course, I could be wrong.

No, you're right. It was done in order to guarentee a good turn out at the following month's show when the rematch was held.
