I remember being put out at how low The Kinks & REM were the last time this was posted but when I saw Kink Kronikles as their top album I ceased to care.

How can the Smiths' "Meat is Murder" be on the list, yet their self titled debut isn't?

Are you high? "Meat is Murder" has "How Soon is Now?" and besides a couple of other ok tunes, not much else. On the other hand, the s/t has four classic Smiths songs as well as another four that are very good in their own right. To each their own, I suppose.

The Headmaster Ritual, I Want The One I Can't Have, How Soon Is Now?, Well I Wonder, and Barbarism Begins At Home are all standouts. Title track is up for discussion. Well I Wonder is an especially underrated gem.

The s/t has Pretty Girls Make Graves, This Charming Man, Hand In Glove, What Difference Does It Make?, and Suffer Little Children working in its favor. However, Reel Around The Fountain lags, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is one of the most boring songs they've ever done, Miserable Lie has an embarrassing falsetto, and I Don't Owe You Anything is pretty forgettable.

Furthermore, the s/t's production has a really dull, flat feel to it on a lot of these tracks, whereas Meat is Murder is a little brighter and features more interesting effects, like the rain shower on Well I Wonder.

"Reel Around the Fountain" is great. Meat is Murder would give The Queen is Dead a run for its money if the former didn't contain the title track, but then I've said that plenty of times over the years on this board, so whatever.

Also, "How Soon is Now?" stopped being enjoyble around the 373rd time I heard it. I envy people who only just got into the Smiths within the last couple of years.

I'll always be puzzled at why a band with this extraordinary talent for perfect concise songwriting would decide to just fumble around with guitar pedals for almost seven minutes. And that's their most popular song, too! Weird.

Tsk tsk. That's one of the best rap albums ever, and thus should be at least in the top 200.

London Calling should be in the top 5.

Explain to me why In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is the greatest album in history. The musicianship isn't exemplary. It wasn't recorded very well. What credentials does this have to be considered the #1 album of all time?

ITAOTS is not an easy album to love, but it's possible. I'm nowhere near GRETEST ALBVUMM EVERR level, but yeah, I'm really fond of it.

As for explaining, what can I say? I think Jeff Mangum was one hell of a songwriter and he knocked out some wonderful songs for that album, particularly during its first half. His delivery rivals that of a young Bob Dylan (I'm comparing the two in terms of passion overcoming lack of "good" singing, so no one piss themselves thinking that I said NMH is on the same plane as Dylan) and so what if the album wasn't "recorded very well." The songs themselves are very simple in structure and instrumentation, so they didn't need the highest fidelity.

ITAOTS is one of my all-time favorites. Probably top 10 stuff. To continue the Dylan references, it hits me in a lot of the same ways that Blonde and Blonde and Blood on the Tracks do, alternating between gut punches and moments of euphoria. I can listen to it at any time of day, in any mood. I'm also not surprised at all when people whose tastes I otherwise agree with don't like it.

Re: the Smiths, I love "Reel Around the Fountain." And though I think all their albums are pretty good, I really enjoy them the most when I toss the whole catalog out there, including all the b-sides, and just put iTunes on shuffle. I don't care how many times I've heard "Cemetry Gates" or "William, It Was Really Nothing"; when they pop up unpredictably, it makes my damn day.

i've finally been able to widdle my top 3. the 3 albums that totally define music for me; in the same way edwin describes. which encompasses everything that is great. something that is perfect. a time in place that no one, even the artists themselves, have ever touched.

1. blonde on blonde
2. big pink
3. london calling

the 1-2 combo shows how fruitful the original pairing of the band & dylan really was. its a utopian musical marriage that'll never be topped.

It's so hard for me to list favorite albums. Using the criteria of "records I can listen to any day, at any time" I come up with Freak Out! and Mr. Bungle's California.
