Fantasy Football - Pre Season

Recommended Posts

Guest Crazy Dan

I mean that with great pride, for I am too a fantasy football geek. I thought all of the players who had some good insight to which players will be good, who are sleepers, etc., we could post it here. For Example:

I think that Kerry Collins might be a good QB to take in the third round or so, who could post some good numbers with the addition of Moss, re-signing Porter, who will make a nice second option, and La Mont Jordon. I forsee a very productive season and would make a nice pickup for those of us who are unable to draft Manning and Culpepper (the top two scoring QB's last season) or McNabb. With those two WR's and an ability to throw it deep, this could be a potential 4000+ passing yards and 30+ TD passes.

McGahee and Evans would be worth drafting high, as they both look like they are the real deal, based on their performance at the end of the season, however McGahee is injury prone, so I definately would consider other options at RB. If he stays healthy, then he could score some points. Evans took advantage of the attention thrown on Moulds, and had a nice end to the season (he was a starter on my team and showed great pose). A

It's way too early to even consider fantasy football. Draft hasn't happened and you need to see guys perform in the camps and at least 1 or 2 preseason games before you decide on who you're after.

I think I'll do fantasy football again this year after not bothering with it last year. kkk's pick em contest is fun stuff too, though... We need to try to bring in the $5 entry fee again. I think I can pull out a victory.

So who wants to give the indepth scoop on the upcoming 2005 NFL Draft? Who wants to be the Mel Keilper of TSM? Will a 6th round RB be better than the premier players from the SEC? Will the whole University of Miami offense be drafted on the 1st day of the draft? Is USC overrated?

"Who the hell is Mel Keilper?"

Anyway, it is pretty much impossible to know, fantasy football wise, what this draft is going to do for the upcoming season. You won't know who will be playing until you see what team they went to.

The only three spots I would be comfortable saying will have an impact this year before that are:

Mike Williams - I think he is the most ready to step into a no. 2 receiver slot no matter who drafts him and should put up at least solid numbers (think 800 yards and 5-7 TDs, conservative)

Matt Jones - I don't see him putting up big yards as he is not going to be able to jump into a system right away, but in the red zone I think he immediately becomes the main target on fades and jump balls. Might only get a couple hundred yards, but I think 6-8 TDs is a reasonable prediction (think WR version of Jerome Bettis' first half of last season). Would obviously only help a TD heavy league.

Any RB taken by Miami (whether it is first round or not) - Miami, IMO, is the only dead red RB drafted will open the season as the starter. And starting RB automatically means a worthy pickup in fantasy. Tampa has been rumored to go RB, but Pittman should steal enough touches to make a difference. And Arizona, I think, will give Shipp a chance to get some carries. A RB draft to them should be good, but Shipp might steal just enough to hurt.

I agree with pinjockey, though I see Williams being a very big redzone threat. His main assets are his crazy hands, large frame, and jumping ability. If he ends up on a team like Minnesota, you know he'll be a prime target for those corner fade routes.

Jones isn't only a threat in the red zone. That psycho sub 4.4 40 means he has the ability to just blow right past a corner. He could be a big threat on deep post routes, or even fly patterns. A QB with a strong arm could just toss it up long range, and Jones has the speed and size to come down with it. I think he needs to learn a lot more about the position to be a real threat this year, though. He's more a late round flyer or FA pickup in a FF league, and it really depends on what team he ends up on (eg he probably won't be so great in a dinky-dunky west coast offense).

Any QB drafted by Arizona has a lot of potential. Dennis Green loves the vertical game and doesn't have a lot of faith in Josh McNown, so a strong-armed QB like Adrian McPherson could really shine.

What is going to happen with the Chargers QB situation, are they going to trade away last years #1 pick Rivers for some more picks or what? Was Brees just a contract year player or is he for real? Will the Broncos continue to trade away their RBs for cheaper players that fit the system? Will the LA Raiders of Oakland, California do anything this year?

No, they will hold onto him until Brees plays through this year and can prove he is for real. Until then, they have the cap room that they don't need to dump him yet. If Brees is a success this year, however, it would be safe to assume Rivers is gone after this season.

Was Brees just a contract year player or is he for real?

Probably a little of each. There will likely be some regression, but with Gates, Tomalinson, and likely a first round WR I don't see him falling off the face of the Earth. Don't expect last year's numbers though.

It has worked so far. Anyway, remember the Tatum Bell (the starter going into this year) was drafted to be the heir apparent. Droughns bought them a year, but it is not like they are dropping down from Droughns to a scrub.

Will the LA Raiders of Oakland, California do anything this year?

They should score some points with LaMont Jordan and an excellent stable of receivers. Don't know if they will be able to stop anyone, but that will only be better for the Raiders in fantasy football.

Aaron Rodgers originally got the #1 hype, but as soon as 49ers said Smith was their top guy he got the hype.

There really isn't a "THE #1 Guy" this year.

What is the deal with all of the hype for Alex Smith from the University of Utah as the #1 pick this year?

I don't really get it either. One great season, then leaving as a junior does not make an NFL-caliber player. Very raw and no show of consistency since he did it for only one year.

I'd take Frye and McPherson over Smith personally, in a later round of course.
