WEC 35: Three Championship Bouts

Recommended Posts

This is next week and the WEC has a growing fanbase on this very board so I think we'll have a thread for every WEC card from now on. Here's the lineup.

MAIN CARD

Champ Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura -- for welterweight title

Champ Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell -- for light heavyweight title

Champ Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks -- for lightweight title

Brian Bowles vs. Damacio Page

Josh Grispi vs. Micah Miller

PRELIMINARY CARD

Brock Larson vs. Carlo Prater

Blas Avena vs. Dave Terrel

Cub Swanson vs. Hiroyuki Takaya

Todd Moore VS. Shane Roller

Mike Budnik vs. Greg McIntyre

Scott Jorgensen vs. Kenji Osawa

I'm not familiar with Miura, I have to be honest. So I have no idea about that fight. Condit is legit, though, so I always look forward to watching him fight. Brian Stann has already knocked out Steve Cantwell so I think they are giving their new posterboy (behind Urijah of course) an easy first title defense.

The fight I'm looking forward to the most is Varner vs. Hicks. Hicks is really friggin' good and if Varner brings his A game that could be a war. Bowles/Page should be a spectacular 135 pound war as well.

Obviously WEC 36 is the stacked money card but this isn't too shabby either.

All quick bouts so far...

Jamie Varner looked pretty damn impressive. I certainly didn't expect such a one-sided affair.

Well so much for making Brian Stann into a mega-star. He got knocked the fuck out by a challenger that was supposed to be a gimme.

Brutal knockout.

FOTYC.

I need to watch that again tomorrow when I'm not fighting off sleep.

Nice chat here tonight, guys. Good work.

Hopefully this'll put to rest the idea that Condit is going to run roughshod over the UFC WW division.

Also, how did I manage to miss everyone and their mother picking Hicks over Varner? Straight-punching, versatile striker get KO'ed by a shorter hook thrower? Not likely.

What are you talking about? Most people picked Varner to win, but thought Hicks was going to give him a tough fight.

From what I saw on the boards, most people (and even Blue) picked Hicks to overwhelm Varner standing, drop him, and finish with a guillotine.

YPOV: Guillard rarely throws straight punches, and I don't recall him ever being KO'ed before.

Wouldn't that go against what you were saying? Anyway, the point wasn't about Guillard himself, I figured you'd know what I was getting at, and why people would pick Hicks in a standup war.

I just meant to say that a guy with Hick's boxing style wasn't likely to KO Varner, not that he would necessarily be KO'ed himself.

Oh, and I feel 'ya.

Fuck, Condit/Miura was a war of attrition. For me, a FOTYC. The judo really put it over the top. Though I think the ref gave Condit a few gifts with the stand ups and finish.

I would agree with all of that, but especially the referee comments. I felt he was way too quick to stand things up whenever Condit seemed to be in trouble. It got almost comical at times.

WEC 35 was another very good show, and I'm really looking forward to Faber's title fight in September.
