Ok, I haven't watched it yet, but this has the makings of a very special show.

The Artist vs. Chris Candido for the Cruiserweight Title

Terry Funk vs. Ralphus vs.Norman Smiley for the Hardcore Title

Curt Hennig vs. Shawn Stasiak

General Rection vs. Scott Steiner for the US Title

Mike Awesome vs. Kanyon

The Total Package vs. Buff Bagwell

Ric Flair vs. Shane Douglas

Vampiro vs. Sting

Hulk Hogan vs. Billy Kidman (w/Eric Bischoff as Special Guest Referee)

DDP vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. David Arquette in a Triple Cage Match for the WCW Championship

We're all going to watch this, love it, and want to talk about it.

This will sound insane but I actually remember liking this show pretty well. WCW was coming off the catastrophic angle where they put the belt on David Arquette and shockingly enough the triple decker cage match on this show was really good (Arquette does little in it).

Hogan/Kidman if I recall is a fun match with some hardcore wrestling from the Hulkster (!). I don't recall what happened with Flair/Shane but I don't recall it being too bad. Kanyon takes a crazed bump against Awesome as well on this PPV.

Not sure about your cable company but I recorded this show on a DVD today right as I found out it was on my system. I had it on VHS from the PPV years ago too, haha.

Must be a Cablevision thing, I can't burn PYBO's or Round Tables.

WCW 2000 is always fun to watch just to see a complete trainwreck and how to kill a company. Seeing stuff like Hugh G Rection, Lex Luger getting a push as the Total Package (Totally Buff explodes!), Hogan in the FUNB phase and the Jeff Jarrett God Push....good times.

I don't think the Vampiro vs Sting is the human torch match however.

The Human Torch match was from GAB 2000. If you want the Russo Holy Trinity of WCW Crap watch a triple feature of GAB 2000, BATB 2000, and particularly New Blood Rising. They are wildly entertaining if nothing else, which is more than I can say for WCW's PPV efforts for the latter half of 1998 and most of 1999 (Spring Stampede aside).

I've still got this show on VHS and it's not that bad a show. Typically for WCW 2000, too much happens in too short a period of time but it's entertaining enough in retrospect.

I actually liked the main event. Arquette as World Champion speaks for itself, but he doesn't harm the match and stays out of the way for the most-part. Kanyon/Awesome is MOTN and a perfect example of two guys who could have accomplished a lot more if given the chance. And the Hardcore 3-Way is a lot of fun, which should be obvious when it involves Funk, Screamin' Norman and the one and only Ralphus.

Honestly, you wanna know why? By that point I had given up on viewing WCW as any sort of serious promotion that could be a viable money drawing fed. It was like after the massive trauma that was 1999 in WCW I threw up my hands, said the hell with it, and enjoyed watching Rome burn.

Even Russo at his absolute insane worst is better than dreck like Fall Brawl 98, Great American Bash 99, Bash at the Beach 99, etc.

I turned this off after the SHOCKING~! turn of David Flair attacking his own father. How anyone can stomach Russo's shit is beyond me.

Hogan v. Kidman is hilarious. It's a shame that Stone Cold Hulk Hogan has been forgotten.

Great American Bash 2000 was even more ridiculous, with both Hogan vs. Kidman and David vs. Ric being possible career-ending matches for Hogan and Flair. Like anyone ever gave that a thought.

I wouldn't go that far- it's just Kidman bumping around for Hogan and then the whole table nonsense. Plus Bischoff's heel antics aren't even creative, he just won't count

Heel Kimberly was the hottest woman in wrestling at the time. Too bad Steiner screamed at her and made her quit or something.

GAB 2000 and BATB 2000 are both certainly more exciting and interesting than the 1999 versions of the same shows. Good grief, BATB 99 is such a terrible show that I had a friend of mine literally walk out on the PPV during the junk yard match.

I wonder, when did WCW first start going off the rails to everyone here? I have mentioned that DDP winning the belt in the bizarre, total lack of heat way he did was the death knell for me personally, but their initial decline was somewhat before then. I would say the initial decline in WCW's product is when they dropped a bunch of fun midcard feuds (Eddie/Chavo, Malenko/Jericho, Booker/Benoit), brought in the Warrior to blather for 20 mins. per show, and let Bischoff do the Tonight Show garbage. Aug./Sept. of 1998 in other words.

There was enough good to satisfy me until Goldberg's loss to Nash and the Finger Poke of Doom. Killed off the top draw in the company, and they never looked back.

I'll agree with you there, cabbageboy. A lot of people point to Goldberg's streak ending and The Finger Poke of Doom but WCW was still doing fine in the first two or three months of '99. In fact, St. Valentine's Day Massacre's buyrate was only a hair bigger than SuperBrawl's and WCW was drawing record house show attendance with Hogan Vs Flair. Speaking of which, I can imagine that first blood cage match they had at Uncensored turned a lot of people off WCW

Back to DDP, I didn't have much of a problem with how he won the title (at least it was something different) but more with the way he was booked afterwards. Almost immediately after he turned heel and IMHO DDP absolutely sucks as a heel. He is the definition of a cliched wrestling heel. And then around that same time- Goldberg took a hiatus to film the Universal Soldier sequel and Hogan took a hiatus. And David Flair started wrestling regularly, we got another Kevin Nash world title run and Sid showed up. Just as WCW seemed to be picking up a little momentum with Spring Stampede, everything seemed to go wrong in a relatively short period of time. That's really the story of WCW. Just as things start to look like they'll work out OK, a bunch of bad shit happens.

Summer of '99 WCW is just unbearable to watch. Even the cruiserweight matches at that period weren't particularly memorable. Hell, I can't even remember who had the title. Yet somehow I own Slamboree '99 and Great American Bash '99 on VHS...go figure.

Thing is, by April 1999 DDP was nowhere even near the world title. Hell he got his ass kicked in a TV title feud with Steiner. He did a stretcher job at SuperBrawl and was off a couple months, then came back....as a heel??? Huh? Say what you want about WWE but at least they will simply go with a guy and give him a run with the belt. Half the time these WCW title wins seemed like political favors rather than attempts to get a guy over and draw money. For instance in 1999 alone:

--Fingerpoke of Doom. Nash did Hogan a political favor and gave him the belt. January.

--Flair over Hogan in the weird first blood cage match. Done to get Flair and his followers to quit bitching about him never beating Hogan, and also to give in to Flair's desire to turn heel. March.

--DDP wins the belt from Flair in that odd 4 way. Done as a political favor to DDP to give him a token title run, despite at that point not being over at all. April.

--Nash beats DDP at Slamboree, since he's booking and all. May.

--Macho beats Nash at BATB, mainly so he can job it straight to Hogan since Hogan plays politics and wants the belt back. July.

--Sting gets the belt from Hogan since Hogan's face return isn't working. Sept.

--I don't know what the hell happens but Goldberg beat Sting and it doesn't count, belt is held up. Oct. This is the Russo regime now.

--Bret beats Benoit in a tourney final with lots of crazy stuff going on. Nov.

--Bret has a career ending concussion and ends up forfeiting the title and retiring. Dec./Jan.

Of all of that insanity the only real attempt to draw a dime was putting the title on Bret, but even then the way it was done made it hard to take seriously.

By the way Rey still had the cruiser title for the Summer of 1999, but he was in that horrendous No Limit angle with the West Texas Rednecks and never really defended much.

You forgot the part where they did another Montreal finish at Starrcade '99 between Bret & Goldberg with Piper as the referee, which ended up with the title being held up and Bret winning it back the next night in the nWo re-start.

Good lord I did forget all about that. It was tough to keep track of all this stuff, but since Bret never really lost the title to Goldberg and forfeited it soon after anyway it was easy to forget.

Courtesy of Web Archives, here's the feedback that this show got on WCW.com back in May 2000.

Here

Most WCW fans seemed to love the show, but I would assume that's because this show was actually better than most other WCW PPVs. My favorite piece of feedback:

-- no Scott Hall and no Goldberg does not help the pay-per-view!!!!!

I love watching WCW 2000 because it's so bad that it's actually kind of entertaining to me. During most of 1998, I followed WCW close enough to know what was going on angle-wise and whatnot, but I always preferred WWF. Around late 1998, I had stopped following WCW outside of occasionally watching Nitro until 9:00 when Raw started. I'll never forget one night that me and some friends decided to watch the last bit of Thunder, and of course, this was the night where Arquette won the title. No one really wanted to watch any wrestling anymore after that. I don't blame them.

Since this is WCW, the best match of the night (Awesome vs. Kanyon) ends in basically a No Contest, or maybe a DQ win for Kanyon. Either way, the finish sucked. Afterwards, it's funny watching Flair, Nash, and Kanyon celebrating. Since all the Millionaires' Club guys are hugging each other, Kanyon decides to get in on it and goes to hug Flair, but Flair doesn't seem very receptive.

DDme might be the worst wrestling insult ever.

Although I watched and ordered PPV's (4 guys getting together, 7 bucks a pop was reasonable), after Slamboree 99 was when I mailed it in on WCW until the re-start around Slamboree 2000. The good thing about those first couple months back and if you look at the card, each match had a purpose as was not thrown together at the last minute or not even announced at all like many matches on the 98-99 PPV's.

Anyone else catch the spot in the Iaukea vs Candido match where Iaukea comes off the top rop and attempts a rollup, but completely misses, but then Candido still sells it and tumbles over anyway? That shit had me in tears!

With the exception of Spring Stampede, 1999 was definitely a bad year for WCW. From the hummer angle to Vampiro getting fucked over and over to the No Limit Soldiers. It was pathetic.

Vampiro wasn't fucked over so much in '99, it was more that he was a complete non-entity for most of the year. I'll grant you when he did finally get pushed after tearing it up for most of the year on Thunder and Saturday Night, he got put in a lot of stupid shit storylines.
