Gas Stations

Recommended Posts

I figured we should have a thread discussing gas stations. Share your favorite gas station related memories.

Here in Maine, it seems like the shittier the city, the better the gas stations. Waterville had one of the best gas stations I've ever seen but it's also where most of Empire Falls was filmed.

Back in my day you could purchase Pro Wrestling Illustrated, Film Threat and Hustler at the local Go Mart. Those were the days.

That's a pretty geeky trifecta right there.

Also, my local Gate gas station has the most epic fountian soda machine i've ever seen. Coke and Pepsi products, vanilla, cherry, something green, and blue raspberry syrups. 44 ounces is like, a dollar thirty or something.

Irving Blue Canoe is the Rolls Royce of Gas Station convenience stores. I've only seen them in Maine but according to their website they're in Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut too. But man, what a gas station. Coke and Pepsi products on the fountain plus you can make your own milkshake- I've never seen another gas station where you could do that. Granted, I've never tried it and the prospect of a gas station milkshake doesn't sound too appealing but it's good to know it's there if I absolutely have to get a milkshake and don't want to run to the fast food place next to the Blue Canoe.

If we're really talking about convenience stores here and not gas stations, I have to say that my neighborhood Plaid Pantry, while sometimes sketchy at night, is my favorite convenience store of all time.

If you wander beyond the outerbelt in pretty much any direction, there's tons of truck stops filled with every manner of manufactured food product, radio equipment, and all sorts of tacky cheap novelties. Basically the perfect place to go if you're taking part in a cheap Secret Santa.

What are the big ass gas stations that have everyyyyyyything. The have like a resteraunt inside, a big ass convenience store, showers, big screen tv, recliners, an arcade, etc. etc. I think they're mainly for truckers.

When I was growing up there was a Circle K near my house that I spent a significant amount of time at or outside of. Lots of hot dogs and Icees were consumed. Then two of my friends robbed it with guns and I didn't like going there anymore. And then it became a 76. When I was in highschool 7-11 was my gas station of choice for non gas related needs. There was one right accross the street from the annex at my highschool, so when I had classes in the annex I could run over and get a slurpy. Blue Raspberry is my favorite slurpy overall, but man at the end of my senior year I went through mountain dew code red slurpy like a crack addict. Good stuff.

Anchorage doesn't have any 7-11's so I have to settle on Holiday for my hot dog/frozen drink fix. Good, affordable hot dogs, but the fuckers seem to turn the slurpy machines off in the winter. FUCKERS. On the plus side any sized soda is $0.99.

Cumberland Farms has 79 cents for any sized sodas and every Cumberland Farms I've come across, even the ones in the sticks are 24/7. They don't have a super large cup but you don't really need that in the first place. Other than that, fuck a bunch of Cumberland Farms. The one near me has possibly the rudest clerk I've ever met. I know working as the overnight clerk at a 24/7 Cumberland Farms in the middle of nowhere is a shitty job but that dude is really unpleasant. And he always checks out your stuff superslowly whilst telling you much of an asshole the customer before you was. I tend to avoid that Cumberland Farms like the plague, at least after 9 PM.

Bigfoot

I have many memories that surround the Bigfoot gas station chain. It really brings me back to my younger years, but for no reason in particular. The friendly sasquatch logo is a big plus, too.

Back when I was in elementary school, I used to walk to this gas station a couple of blocks from my house to get candy, and the clerk looked just like Michael P.S. Hayes. I brought it up to him one time, and he actually knew who I was talking about, but he wasn't sure if it was a compliment or not.

They exist here in the South, pretty standard fare.

I dated a girl from a lower income family and her cousin used to go bring the kids to the local gas station to get the 1.25 hot dogs for supper. On a good week they could up grade for the 1.75 chili dogs :(

Sheetz is my favorite gas station to go to because I only see them 2-3 times a year, when I travel to PA for conferences or banquets for work. The northern part of WV has like one run-down Sheetz, and it is not that awesome. Pittsburgh has some Sheetz that are better than most fast food restaurants, though. Their "Made to Order" selection has some kick ass food, and you can make your own milkshakes. Some of the better set-ups have 16-20 pumps so you don't have to wait in line at busy stations, and they have just about everything you need travel-wise int he store. Anyone else checked out a Sheetz?

I live in a suburb of Dallas, TX... so our most prolific and famous gas station/convenience stores are 7-Eleven. I really don't know how far the reach of 7-Eleven extends, but they're fucking everywhere here. Some nights, I want a Coca-Cola Slurpee like a fucking pregnant woman wants ice cream. So if I go to the first one, and the Slurpee machine is in defrost, no worries. There's at least 4 more locations within a 5 minute drive of my home.

Some fair warning though. Never, NEVER EEEEEEEVER eat the hot dogs there. They're at least a month old, and they just roll around on this metal roller-thingy and sweat constantly. Also the nachos suck too, and the cheese looks like something that leaked from a nuclear reactor.

I have an ancient thermos from Huck's that I still use.

Since this doesn't seem to require the presence of gas pumps anymore, I'll tell you about Town and Country Liquor. I've talked about my love of liquor stores before, but this one, holy shit it's great. It's across the street from my work.

As far as liquor, they have everything from Grey Goose and Patron to Thunderbird and Night Train. Every flavor of Cisco and Mad Dog.

Any soda you can imagine. Multiple flavors of Bubble Yum and Jolly Rancher soda. Coke and Pepsi on tap. Weird snack foods from around the world. Kick ass beef jerky. A jar of pickles. Energy drinks I've never even heard of. Deli sandwiches, burritos, all kinds of pastries...

And all of that is priced to even dollar amounts.

A shitload of magazines. A porn section that could probably rival a lot of adult stores, and to top it off... porn dvds!

The place is a mecca. If there's a zombie apocalypse, that's where I'm holing up.

Holy shit. I'm coming down to the Bay Area in about a month, Dave. Where's that, exactly?

Kamala and I briefly discussed Slush Puppies in CTDWAT about a month ago. I'd much rather eat a Puke Icee than any flavour of Slush Puppy.

AvonMart in Fort Erie, Ontario still has them. It was up the road from the house I grew up in (1995-2004), and they still had them as recently as last month when I was there. Incidentally, that's the only place I've ever seen that actually had them.

I can only find Slush Puppy machines in hick gas stations in the middle of nowhere. The corner store up the street from my house had one for years from about the time I moved there when I was 3 until I was in 5th or 6th grade. Then they replaced it with an as crappy if not worse "fruit smoothie" machine (I think they called it smoothies but it was more of a precursor of Dunkin' Donuts Fruit Coolatas). The smoothie machine didn't last too long.

What's the weirdest food (or drink) item you've found in a gas station or convenience store?

Well, it was weird to me, but only because I had never been to Texas or anywhere with a higher concentration of Mexican population. I went into a small gas station in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and they had homemade tamales wrapped in aluminum foil. Like I said, it was weird for me, but I can clearly see this is common in the area and other areas with that kind of population.

It's the same thing as when people from New York or New Jersey have stayed at my parents' lodging facility and thought I was retarded for recommending they get the "biscuits and gravy" at a local restaurant known for it's breakfast. They thought I was talking about turkey gravy or something similar. It was weird for them to experience biscuits and gravy, but that is most definitely not weird for certain regions.

First (and only, actually) porn mags I ever bought was in my youthful days of 18 and 19 years old, at this convenience store in Santa Clarita, CA called the Valencia (or maybe it's Santa Clarita now) Newsstand. Shitloads of magazines, and a humidor with a bunch of great cigars in the back, and then a great porn section. I personally liked the Playboy SEs, although I understand that's not "real porn" by you guys' standards.

I mostly liked that place because it was one of the only places in my (at the time) sleepy little suburb which was actually open 24 hours a day, besides a few fast food places. Man, that place used to be so depressing in the middle of the night. It was like Texas or something.
