Forrest, Cummo, Hughes, & Franklin

Recommended Posts

Just an FYI to everybody that these 4 are on the Big Idea w/ Donny Deutsch on CNBC right now.

They're chatting about the dangers of ultimate fighting compared to other sports. The fighters handled themselves well w/o getting too defensive. And of course the comparison to wrestling was brought up w/ Hughes asking what the difference of punching someone while mounting them to hitting someone w/ a chair was.

Talking now about the gloves they use in the UFC. Forrest brings up that the gloves actually make someone hit harder than w/ bare knuckles and are obviously safer for the puncher.

Franklin brings up that the cage is also safer for those outside as if Hughes takes someone down, the cage will keep them in rather than spilling through the ropes.

A neurosurgeon is going to be on next to claim how it's a matter of time before someone dies from ultimate fighting.

Oh Lordy, the neurosurgeon is citing Hulk Hogan's negative opinion on ultimate fighting for his argument. He's now claiming that when a fighter is put in a chokehold, it causes the damage of a mini-stroke.

Forrest just put Deutsch in a chokehold (per Deutch's request) for about 1/2 second before he tapped to end the segment. Nice.

They can try to reason it as being "dangerous" (which it is), but most sports are dangerous. NASCAR has way more deaths than MMA. Football and Hockey have more serious injuries than MMA. So it doesn't really fly if they're not criticizing other sports. I think the issue is psychological. The cage. The gloves. The fact that there's no padding. People ignore the realities in other sports because the players have padding so "they're not really getting hurt", while MMA just has the tiny 5 ouncers. But since MMA seems more violent, to them, it is more dangerous.

Is this a repeat of something that happened a while ago? Im a past observer Meltzer wrote about this story and how the show tried to constantly rip on ultimate fighting by bringing up stuff that wasn't true (hair pulling, etc) and Hughes would simply correct him in a polite manner. Apparently the host just kept on persisting that it was dangerous while Hughes always had an answer to shut down whatever accusations that were thown. I remember Dave writing about how the neurosurgeon didn't even have a clue regarding the dangers of UFC and claiming things were much worse then they really are.

It was a repeat. The neurosurgeon probably didn't even test or inspect fighters, or even talk to other doctors about the problems of head trama. He was working from the premise that "If you get hit in the head, it will effect your brain" and "if someone chokes you, it effects your brain", which is true enough (though I imagine the chokes in the UFC have very little effect given that I haven't seen anyone go the Inoue route in a while... well, Baroni maybe, but he doesn't really have much up there in the first place. I think it was a little extreme for the doc to equate it to a stroke), but the problem lies with demonizing fighting for head trauma, and yet saying Football and Boxing are ok (DD said he was a big boxing fan).
