WWE Raw XV

Recommended Posts

So I expected this to be nothing more than the 15th Anniversary episode of Raw, and I was going to be happy enough watching Ted DiBiase buy one more win. Instead, it's the Best of Raw DVD, which should be awesome but is inexplicably clipped all over the place. Still, there's loads of (highlights of) good stuff. We've got...

It's split up on three discs, but it looks like it will be more than three parts. I've just gotten through the Kid/Bret match, which I'd never seen. I really got into it, so I figured I'd make a thread. There's plenty of shit to discuss after fifteen years. Like Tek War.

Original to the DVD. Deon felt they made it the worst DVD ever made. Don't bother with that chapter list either since it tricked a lot of people last January. "Frist Raw" is just a segment from the Raw Homecoming special on USA in 2005, Perfect vs. Flair is clipped, and a lot of later segments are just already existing video packages they threw on a DVD. I actually reviewed the set for the Observer website last year and would shamelessly link it here if it hadn't been lost in the F4W merger (though I was assured a back-up of it was archived somewhere along with everything else on the old Observer site).

Original ECW Invasion February 24, 1997 is the same segment from The Rise and Fall of ECW as well.

Also, from your review-"(unless no one has said how awesome Kevin Kelly's "CALL THE POLICE!" yelling was, then I'll go on record to say that)"

"Oh my God; he's back!" is the greatest call in wrestling history.

Maybe since I didn't pay for a DVD of this I was able to enjoy it more. I watched part 1 tonight and since I was short on time I didn't mind the clip jobs. I can't recall if I actually saw Bret/Kid or not at the time but it was a great match.

Yeah, I despise those video packages they've thrown onto the DVDs from the most recent PPVs. It's just plain lazy on their part although I guess it saves them money.

It annoyed me that they clipped the Flair/Hennig match and then don't even bother to put the full version on the Mr. Perfect DVD. I think, but I'm not sure, that Bret/Kid is in its entirety.

Only because I've watched it so much did I notice a subtle edit in Jericho's debut.

Original:

Jericho: Chris Jericho has come to save the WWF!

JR: Aww from what?

New:

Jericho: Chris Jericho has come to save the World Wrestling Federation.

Then there's no commentary. The bold part comes from the beginning of the promo where he proclaims himself the new millennium for the Fed.

Yeah, some character with a blog pointed that out in his review of the set too. The set came out around the same time the Jericho debut was a Shortie on 24/7 and the difference could be compared easily.

Austin was using the Smoking Skull belt at the time and was stripped of the title the previous night due to both Kane and Undertaker pinning him. Vince kept the belt as a prized possession and busted out the classic belt for the presentation. So, three choices:

1. They couldn't find the 'new' WWE title and used the old one as a prop for the night.

2. They were thinking of going back to that design.

3. They were teasing us.

I think the real reason is that Austin accidentally broke the new WWF Championship belt a few months before Breakdown. And since Austin wanted his own version of the Title anyway, they didn't go ahead and create the version with the WWF scratch logo that we all know and love until just right before or right after Breakdown.

You know, while watching part 3 of this Best of Raw deal I noticed how nothing good on the show from that 1998-99 period had anything to do with wrestling. It was all goofy skits and angles. With the first couple of years they at least could put together a decent compilation in terms of quality matches. The only match on part 3 was Foley/Rock.

Raw cards up until like 1999 featured little in the way of great wrestling. You would have a very good main event but the undercard would be terrible. Once the decade drew to a close, the quality of the in-ring product picked up dramatically. Raw was storylines, promos, and angles. Memorable though.

It's beautiful. Seriously, there are no two wrestlers better suited for musical chairs than Jericho and Flair. Note the wink Jericho gives Flair shortly after he pushes Stacy (which bumps the game up to **** & 7/16).

Snitsky's poem is hilarious.

I also loved how "It wasn't MY fault" used to preceed his entrance.

Oh, the Matt Hardy tease is mean as hell, but funny
