MST3K on Sci Fi

Recommended Posts

I didn't know this show was still on until I turned on Sci Fi channel this morning at 8am (central time that is) I love this show. I haven't laughed that hard in ages.

Is it on every Saturday?

I watch it from time to time. It really doesn't have the same magic as the Comedy Central episodes. I never could get used to Crow's new voice.

The later episodes were only good for the movie segments; the skits became increasingly unfunny as time went on, and I HATED Pearl.

Can Comedy Central please start showing the old episodes. The ones on Sci-Fi just aren't in the same league.

Good thing I have about 80 of the Comedy Central episodes on tape. Might go nuts if I couldn't watch those.

I've got all the Rhino releases, and quite a few of the Sci-Fi ones. I don't mind the Sci-Fi ones, but I long for episodes like Master Ninja or The Melting Man again.

Hey MadDog, I'll trade you 3 Simpsons, South Park, Celebrity Deathmatch, and Futurama, for 3 MST3K Comedy Central episodes.

Or you can just copy them and send them to me. Your call.

Deal?

You'd have to give me awhile as my collection isn't at my current residence. I'd also need to snag a second VCR. But let me look, I can probably find a tape that already has episodes I got on Rhino release. About Wednesday I'll be able to look through them so I'll get back to you.

Comedy Central dosen't own the rights to the old episodes. They couldn't air them even if they wanted to, which I can assure you they don't.

The rights to the movies shown in the CC episodes expired a long time ago and buying the rights would be very expensive and are something no one with the money is interested in buying.

If you looked into the history of the show, you would see that the show's continuation always depended on the support of network executives, not ratings - which I'm sure were not any higher or lower than any other cable show.

From 1990 to 94 CC was a very small cable channel that almost no one could get (I had to go to my Grandmother's house to see it, and if you think CC shows a lot of SNL reruns now...) and MST3K was it's most critically acclaimed and well known show, so it was pretty safe. But in '94 there was a management change and an MTV executive named Doug Herzog was put in charge with a mandate to make the network hipper (like MTV, I guess). Well within a year MST3K was canceled and CC was on it's was to becoming the network of Craig Killborn, South Park, and The Man Show.

So MST3K moves to the Sci-Fi where a guy named Barry Schullman was a big fan a the show, but Barry leaves the network (with his final action being to renew MST3K for it's 10th and final season) and is replaced by Bonnie Hammer who is indifferent to the show and quickly cancels new episodes in 1999.

The contract to air the reruns expired in Jan.2002 but were suprisingly given a one year renewal (likely because Sci-Fi still has the rights to most of the movies shown and they have nothing better to air). So enjoy the Sci-Fi reruns while you can because MST3K might be leaving television forever in Jan. or Feb. (I have most of the CC and Sci-Fi eps on tape so I don't have to worry).

BTW, Doug Herzog left CC in 1999 to become the head of the FOX network (where he failed miserably and was out after one year) and is now the top guy at USA network. Bonnie Hammer is still in charge of the Sci-Fi channel, so all programing decisions can be blamed on her.

Sorry if that was more than anyone wanted to know.

I always watched MST3K for the movie parts and I never really cared what they did in skits. If the skits were good then great and if they weren't i'd ignore it and wait for the movie to return.

So the Crow voice change (which i never noticed until i read that it was changed) and Pearl (who while not as good as Forrester and Frank i never found to be that terrible) doesn't really affect my enjoyment and i still find it to be good. The movie which the show is built around is still usually funny so i don't see why people still bitch so much.

I actually liked Mike, Bill, and Pearl better than Joel, Trace, and Frank.

Well i always liked Mike more then Joel. But eventhough i don't find Pearl to be that bad and find enjoyment with Bobo and Brain Guy they don't compare to Doctor Forrester and TVs Frank.

I myself prefer Trace's Crow as opposed to Bill Corbett's. Trace's voice was just easier to listen to do during the movies. I haven't seen much Joel, so I guess I favor Mike more.

Next week's Ep: Prince of Space. Heh.

Sci-Fi might cancel the RE-RUNS of MST3K, too?! Ok, THAT'S IT! I'm mowing every lawn in the neighborhood until I get a real job, saving up every scrap of money I make, and I'm buying a network and the rights to all the MST3K shows, WHO'S WITH ME?!?!

I am! I refuse to let the timeless activity of hurling insults at movies that more than deserve it fade away!

Thing is, if Sci-Fi channel lets the rights go... then what's to stop another network from picking them up and showing them, if not even (gasp!) producing new episodes? The damn thing is dirt-cheap to make, you just need a soundstage, two sets, a bluescreen, an old movie, and the actors and crew. That's it.

And the rights to the old movie which must be more expensive then you'd think since that's the thing holding up reruns.

There's an online petition going around to send to Comedy Central in hopes of persuading them to bring back MST3K reruns to their schedules.

It's probably a longshot, but you never know what you could do:

The thing is, they show BAD movies. Do you think a studio is going to care about some terrible and forgotten movie that nobody cares about? I'm sure whoever made Manos was more than glad that someone wanted to use it for anything.

Well alot of the movies probably aren't even owned by a studio. I mean what studio would want to own Manos.

So since most are likely owned by a person then yeah i'm sure they are going to want to be paid for giving you the rights to use it.

It's the main reason why MST has never shown up in reruns so it must be an actual problem. I think the company that makes MST has even said that's one of the problems that keeps a channel from buying reruns or showing reruns.

So we probably won't ever see alot of episodes until the movie becomes public domain.
