WWF/E Tidbits from the past

Recommended Posts

Now I read everywhere that Henning won the IC by beat Tito Santana in the finals of a tournament, but I swear I saw a battle royal where those were the last two guys in the ring and eliminated each other then Henning crawled back into the ring first, with help from Heenan(which is why The Brain started managing him in the firstplace), to win. Did I imagine that?

Yes you did.

The results from that tourney (courtesy of Graham Cawthon's site):

Taped 4/4/1990: WWF IC Title Tournament Quarter Finals: Tito Santana defeated Akeem via count-out after Santana's flying forearm sent Akeem out of the ring; WWF IC Title Tournament Quarter Finals: Mr. Perfect pinned Jimmy Snuka with his feet on the ropes

Taped 4/23/1990: WWF IC Title Tournament Quarter Finals: Dino Bravo fought Brutus Beefcake to a double count-out at 5:17 after Mr. Perfect interfered at ringside; WWF IC Championship Tournament Finals: Mr. Perfect pinned Tito Santana with an inside cradle at 7:30 after Santana became distracted by Bobby Heenan at ringside; after the match Perfect announced that Heenan was his new manager; the title belt used at the end of the contest was actually an old tag team championship belt (Battle of the WWF Superstars).

Taped 4/24/1990: WWF IC Championship Tournament Quarter Finals: Roddy Piper fought Rick Martel to a double disqualification; this bout took place after Mr. Perfect won the tournament but was aired one week prior to the tournament finals

Was there any reason why Furnas and LaFon got a big push in their debut match by surviving at SS96, but then never really got pushed much after that?

I think it was down to their lack of charisma and personality, which made it really hard for them to connect with the crowd. Also, they were physically broken down by then, and really couldn't let loose, as it were, and win the crowd over that way. They really needed a mouthpiece too, as neither was any good on the mic.

Here's another one I just remembered, from the 93 Rumble.

From the same site as the 1994 stuff

There was a reason why Max Moon (Paul Diamond) and Tatanka (Chris Chavis) were not in the Rumble at the same time. Why? Because Chavis' wife had been having a real life affair with Diamond! I thought this was ridiculous at first, but I've heard this from tons of people. A number of wrestlers have also reported that Diamond and Chavis have had to be separated and restrained in locker rooms.

-There were rumors in late 96 of WWF trying to get a slot on Fox for a late Saturday night show that could be edgier.

Didn't they get on Fox with Saturday Night Shotgun, or something?

I was younger so the memory is all hazy, but I do recall SNS being on Channel 38 (Which is Fox now, if it wasn't then), but I do know it came on at midnight.

Yeah, they got Shotgun Saturday Night...but was that on Fox? I can't even remember.

I remember Taker tombstoning HHH on an escalator though. And that weird shit with Sunny.

EVERYBODY remembers that damn escalator tombstone. It was pretty much the only memorable thing about the show... the only others might be Sunny and the Sisters of Love.

Perfect did the flip in the ring to win the Battle Royal finish on SNME in JMay 91, He and Greg Valentine flipped over simultaniously

Shotgun was a syndicated show. WWF Magizine listed the 20 or show stations that carried it initially

Yep. That finals is on a Coliseum Home Video, and after Mr. Perfect won he introduced Bobby Hennan as his manager. And the IC belt was one of the Tag Team Titles for whatever reason.

I have the tape somewhere I think...

Some time in late '96, a group of wrestlers found out that Duke Droese was date raping ring rats. A small group of wrestlers, led by Ahmed Johnson, stormed Droese's hotel room one night and murdered him. The case is listed as "unsolved".

Barry Horowitz was actually a practicing Nazi, and embraced his gimmick of a Jew who loses every match.

While Rikishi was doing his gimmick of telling kids to stay off drugs, as a joke to entertain the boys he would do some mescaline or PCP before heading to the ring at house shows.

Bob Holly was Bradshaw's first rape victim.

Mo from Men on a Mission was actually Wesley Willis.

Thread has been turned into jobber extreme flashbacks. I think I remember Max Moon, how and why I do not know. Goes to show you the crap that sticks to the flypaper is stronger than what the finish to the MOTY at Halloween Havoc between the luchas was.

There was one Saturday Night's Main Event on FOX. It was the one with Shawn Michaels beating Davey Boy Smith for the IC Title.

Yep. I think there might have been a couple. I remember Al Bundy doing a promo for it saying he's going to watch it about an hour before the show.

For the record, the match in question saw Psychosis and Juventud Guerrera beating Damien and Halloween, and the finish was Damien being sat atop Psychosis's shoulders, and Juvented hitting Damien with a frankensteiner.

There were two. The first one featured Ric Flair/The Undertaker vs. Hulk Hogan/Sid Justice and the Randy Savage-Jake Roberts "blowoff".

Why did Sid leave the WWF in 1997?

A contract dispute of sorts, I think, as in his shoot he talks about being injured and WWF not paying for it or something like that. He also kept pitching fits over having to do jobs. On a Raw not long after WM XIII, he did a clean job to Undertaker, and he basically had to be threatened with being fired before he would agree to it.

What caused the Warrior's run as WWF Champion to be a failure?

He totally failed to connect with the fans as major player. For whatever reason, he just didn't click with the fans when put in the top spot. WWF would frequently change his look, by changing his hair color, his facepaint, even the color of the WWF Title belt, trying to find that look that would connect to the fans. But, it just didn't work. It probably didn't help that Hogan stole the WM VI spotlight from him with the post-match, thus reducing UW to background scenary, and taking the impact away from UW scoring the first post-Hulkamania clean pin over Hogan.

When WWF tried to use lucha workers to go against the WCW ones who were they? I remember they worked a match at the 97 Rumble and a few matches on tv as well. Im pretty sure Hector Garza was one.

The ones at RR '97 were Hector Garza, Perro Aguayo, El Canek, Jerry Estrada, Heavy Metal, and Fuerza Guerrera. They also used Cibernetico and Pierroth a couple of times, and, despite both being old and slow, pimped them as being young high flyers during commentary.

Few questions....

1. I heard a few years back, that Lex Luger was suppose to go over Yokozuna at WM10, but spoiled the finish to some fan at the bar, hence Bret went over him instead. Any truth to this?

2. What happen with the Warrior leaving in 1996? What was their plans going to be with him?

3. What was going to be their plans with Ahmed Johnson(Who was SUPER over in 1996 and early 1997) until injurys hit him?

The finish was changed not long after RR, when Luger was booed out of the building when he was declared the Rumble winner.

Warrior left over a dispute to do with the WWF using his "Always Believe" slogan. He claimed they used it without permission, and he wanted his cut of the money made off it.

I think Ahmed was probably going to be kept as the #2 or #3 babyface. Of course, his lack of talent, injury rate, and injuries he caused others, put paid to that.

What caused the Warrior's run as WWF Champion to be a failure?

The big problem besides those already mentioned was that the Wrestlemania VI match split the fanbase, and the Hogan fans didn't take to Warrior all that well. Also, the big storyline in the summer of 1990 was Hogan/Earthquake while Warrior was put in against guys like Haku & Dino Bravo for the early part of his reign, before moving on to Rick Rude who he disposed of convincingly already the year before. Warrior was treated like an afterthought during his reign. The exact same thing happened to Goldberg 8 years later.

Another thing that might have factored in to his failure was that Warrior was rapidly going insane in real life at this point and it eventually started affecting his character. It was definitely noticeable by the Savage feud.

I think there also was something about Warrior's father dying and him missing out on some house shows for the funeral and arrangements and not even bothering to call WWF about it. Sid just wound taking Warrior's place so I'm sure Warrior would have faced The British Bulldog at SummerSlam considering Shawn and friends were at war with Camp Cornette. After that, who knows? I doubt Shawn would have even wanted to work a program with him.
