    '90s Song Tournament

I shall be wrapping this up soon. Any late voters have until roughly 3 EST to get their votes in.

I noticed that, too. Did we ever address the wild internet speculation about the voice in the numbers transmission sounding like Hurley? That would be sort of a mind-bending turn, where Hurley was actually responsible for the recording that ultimately led him to the island. And now that he's in 1977, it seems pretty damn plausible.

    LOST

How do we know that Radzinsky knows about the donkey wheel? Was that on the blast door map or what? I actually found this episode a little disappointing. The whole "not much happening, but fleshing out minor details" thing was what I thought the show was doing the last month or so. I was ready for the plot to really start moving forward tonight, and that didn't really happen.

    This week in the NBA

Not to come off all bob_barron-y or anything, but while I agree that Karc's point is pretty ridiculous, I don't see any problem with the way he's making that point. You can't ban someone just because you disagree with him, right? Frankly, I'd be interested to hear Karc's take on LeBron James and Los Spurs. Karc's all right in my book. He isn't a doctor or a lawyer or a politician or a high school graduate or an expert on much of anything--except for what he believes in. I admire that.

    The NFL OT Rule

Yeah, keep the playoff seeding like it is. Hosting a game is one of the incentives for winning your division. What would you change about the overtime rules, Cheech? Change it to the college-style OT (which I find both exciting and sort of ridiculous) or play out an additional ten-minute period or what?

    College emotion vs professional devotion

Amen to that. 16 of 30 teams qualifying makes getting to the playoffs in the NBA easier than qualifying for a bowl game in college football.

    No more Sci-Fi channel

Mansquito. They've been running a lot of ads for the positively awful Frankenfish on Sci-Fi recently. Even for people who like to get fucked up and watch bad movies, Frankenfish holds little value. I'd avoid it.

    LOST

I'm really excited for this episode, as well. What's particularly exciting is, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, all of the plot threads have finally caught up with one another, so everything can finally start to move forward after a few weeks of being in a bit of a holding pattern. We can finally get some answers as to where and when everyone is, and hopefully why they're there.

    College emotion vs professional devotion

Well, I would argue that (probably) the NBA season and (certainly) the MLB season are too long. As Czech mentioned earlier, we knew exactly which 4-5 teams actually had a chance of winning the NBA title before the All-Star break this year. The entire second half of the season is basically the top teams fighting for seeding. I can understand it from a financial standpoint, but from a competitive sense and really just from an entertainment standpoint the whole thing really isn't that interesting and it just goes on forever. The NBA feels like NASCAR to me, in that the next season seemingly starts as soon as the previous one ends. In any event, the relative brevity of the college season contributes to the excitement for me, because the stakes are so much higher every game. This is particularly true in football, where every big game has a life-or-death sort of atmosphere.

    Eastbound and Down

April reminds me a lot of a friend of mine: same naturally tan skin, same large breasts, same high-pitched southern accent. What's more, my friend is actually a middle school teacher from Shelby, North Carolina. What the hell's going on here? The last two episodes have hooked me in. I'm interested to see where they go with it now that Kenny and April have hooked up so soon into the show's run.

    American Idol Season 8

Two bad performances in a row should have Michael back on the rig, hopefully. Lil Rounds was no great shakes, but she should get the benefit of the doubt. I must admit that I did not have high hopes for Anoop on Grand Ole Opry night, but he redeemed himself nicely.

    College emotion vs professional devotion

I would have to disagree with the bolded portion pretty vehemently. If there's one thing that college sports has over pro sports, it's atmosphere. There aren't a lot of pro venues that can match the intensity and--here's that word again--passion that you get at a big-time collegiate game. You don't find the atmosphere and branding at an NBA game to be a trifle manufactured? Dunking gorillas and "Gonna Make You Sweat" and Stephen A. Smith and shit. C'mon man. I've always found the whole "the level of play is higher" argument to be similar to the argument that Yngwie Malmsteen is better than, like, the Replacements because he can play a million notes in one song. Yeah, he's obviously more talented, but there's something sort of mechanical there that just leaves me cold. And I do enjoy the NBA, but I don't think anyone would deny that there's a certain level of going through the motions that occurs in the regular season, particularly with teams that are more or less assured of a playoff spot. College players play hard (and not in the Dotel sense) every game. It doesn't bother me that they're less talented. I appreciate the effort.

    The 2009 NFL Offseason

Ah. It must have slipped my mind that they tagged him this year. So in the event that they do end up trading him, shouldn't they try to get a little more than a 2nd round pick? Seems like the guy should have tremendous value, as we've all seen how dominant he can be when he's healthy and motivated. I can understand not wanting to take on additional big money first round gambles, but at least try to get a player out of the deal. Maybe trade him straight-up for a disgruntled quarterback.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day

My name is not Patrick, but I am (probably) at least partly Irish, so happy St. Patrick's Day to me. Seems unlikely that I'll do any sort of drinking tonight. I don't need society to tell me when it's acceptable for me to binge drink, y'know? That's also why I didn't go to college.
  15. Definitely Not Hot Young Wang Region 1. Goldengreek- Still not totally clear on who theone is. I wonder if maybe you guys would miss the unintentional comedy were Goldengreek to get the boot. 2. Jerichoholic82- This is not deeply felt. I don't often interact with either one. Most Likely Homosexual Region 1. cabbageboy- I don't feel all that strongly about this one, either. 3. AmDragFan- AmDragFan is a fucking miserable cocksucker. I'd kill him if I ever saw him. I would beat him to death. BUTT Fuck Stupid Region 4. Chazz- The very bane of my existence! Chazz! 3. DarKnight- Batman-themed username + That 'K' = Die. The "I Tried to Save Good Matchups Until the End and Now I Have a Fuck Load of Them" Region 4. Cartman- Fan of Boston sports. 3. Y2Jerk- Even though I still don't know who he is.

    '90s Song Tournament

Yeah, they did an "I Am The Walrus"/"Glass Onion" thing with it. It was sort of lame, considering that I don't remember there being a lot of speculation as to the true identity of "Seether." That's "Sex Type Thing," so you're in luck.

    The 2009 NFL Offseason

Adam Schefter says that he's 99.9% certain that the Peppers-to-New England deal won't happen. Good. I'd definitely prefer that the Patriots not win all of their games again. Does "addition by subtraction" ever work in the NFL? I've never understood the idea that you could get better by getting rid of your best players. And it's not like Peppers is a locker room cancer or anything, at least as far I know of. The guy just comes out and says "I don't wanna play here no more" and Carolina has to scramble to find a trade partner? Fuck that. He's under contract. Same with Jay Cutler. If you're all butthurt and don't want to get paid obscene amounts of money to play for the team that you're under contract to, go work at a cell phone kiosk with Travis Henry.

    '90s Song Tournament

That was a '90s song, right? That Aaliyah song. Shoulda been on the list! The list is a sham! No, I'm good, actually. This thing will limp along to a conclusion that no one could be happy with regardless of what songs are in the tournament, so this group is as good as any. So while I did consider filling the brackets with Aerosmith and Meat Loaf songs and renaming it "You Can't Have Shit Without A BUTT" last night, I'm glad that cooler heads prevailed.

    '90s Song Tournament

I feel that every song in my tournament is a potential winner. You don't think that "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" could win this competition? I say fuck you. You don't know the first thing about music.

Story of my life. I'd love to get as high as giraffe pussy right now, but there exists the vague possibility of some job calling me back and me ruining my life by failing a drug test. I went to apply for a job as a sign twirler this afternoon. You know, one of these people on the side of the road advertising tax services or pizza or what have you. 100 fucking people showed up. 100 fucking people! How is my application going to stand out there? I don't have any sign twirling experience. I've never dressed up like the Statue of Liberty or Uncle Sam or a piece of pizza. There's no way I get this job. I'm just a guy. But if I can get as high as giraffe pussy...I'm a superstar!

    '90s Song Tournament

I appreciate your concern, Cheech. I really really really really really do. But in compiling this list, I'm put in the uncomfortable position of being all things to all people, y'know? If I put in all of these fairly well known but not mainstream popular indie rock songs, I'm an elitist. BUTT is all over my ass. If I represent a lot of fringey hip hop stuff, you and Byron the Bulb are happy but that shit is losing to Hootie and the Blowfish by 15 votes. This British guy is on a completely different plane. Who knows what the British listened to in the 1990s? Not a fucking clue. The basic point is that I had 128 slots to represent every fucking song that was released in an entire ten year period, so of course some of your favorite songs are going to be left out. Get a fucking clue, all of you. Jesus Christ, why did I ever volunteer for this. What a fucking thankless exercise. I hope you all die of a painful communicable disease. See you next round.

    '90s Song Tournament

You are WRONG. So, so wrong. I left Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, etc. out because no one was going to vote for that adult contempo horseshit. It's unfortunate that I couldn't cater to each individual poster's taste in music. Maybe a round of 10,000 next time.

    '90s Song Tournament

Toad the Wet Bracket Veruca Salt- "Seether" Salt-N-Pepa- "Whatta Man" I saw them open for Bush in Landover, Maryland. They were a sort of cheesecake-y alternative to the more serious-minded riot grrrrrr...ls that were prevalent in those days. Still like this song. Backstreet Boys- "I Want It That Way" Beck- "Loser" Kind of an iffy Beck song against the only particularly good Backstreet Boys song. A no-brainer. Paula Cole- "I Don't Want To Wait" Montell Jordan- "This Is How We Do It" It wasn't the theme song to Dawson's Creek, but it'll do. Everything But The Girl- "Missing" Goo Goo Dolls- "Iris" Sort of by default. I saw the Goo Goo Dolls for free in a driving rainstorm inside of a dormant volcano in Italy. That they were good sports about playing in the shitty conditions doesn't make their music any better. Hanson- "Mmmbop" The Breeders- "Cannonball" Straight from the Buzz Bin. Chris Isaak- "Wicked Game" Snoop Doggy Dogg- "Gin and Juice" I so very much wanted to buy Doggystyle back in '93/'94, but was too embarrassed to do so. Who know how my life might have turned out differently had I just gone for it and not bought an Alice In Chains album instead. A girlfriend bought me a copy of the Snoop album about ten years later. It's good. Jewel- "Who Will Save Your Soul" Kris Kross- "Jump" A surprisingly fun song to listen to. Check that Another Bad Creation diss. Ice cold. I wore my clothes backwards a few times. So did some of you, I'm sure of it. Eve 6- "Inside Out" Deee-Lite- "Groove Is In The Heart" I saw Eve 6 at an outdoor festival in downtown Asheville about five years after their expiration date. They were terrible. Deee-Lite has never let me down. Sarah McLachlan- "Building a Mystery" Jamiroquai- "Virtual Insanity" A fun song, a fun video, a fun hat. Warren G. (feat. Nate Dogg)- "Regulate" Ricky Martin- "Livin La Vida Loca" YES. Sixpence None The Richer- "Kiss Me" Notorious B.I.G. (feat. Puff Daddy and Mace)- "Mo Money Mo Problems" The only B.I.G. song on here, sadly. A case could have been made for a few others, but room needed to be made for Sophie B. Hawkins and Sixpence None The Richer. Christina Aguilera- "Genie In A Bottle" L.L. Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out" Sexually suggestive tune introduces the world to the 2nd skankiest MMC alum, right behind Justin Timberlake. Boyz II Men- "End Of The Road" Fiona Apple- "Criminal" A fucking tough call here. "End Of The Road" was mah jay-um back in '92. I had that shit on cassingle and would blast it out of my jukebox all over the neighborhood and youth center. But I would actually listen to "Criminal" now, which I can't really say for the Boyz II Men song. Toni Braxton- "You Mean The World To Me" Weezer- "Buddy Holly" Maybe the best Weezer song, and a great video. Mariah Carey- "Dreamlover" U2- "One" Never really cared for U2, but this song is gorgeous. 'N Sync- "Tearin' Up My Heart" Jay Z- "Can I Get A..." whatwhat Give Me One Region To Stay Here Nirvana- "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana- "Heart Shaped Box" I don't really buy into the supposed historical significance of "Teen Spirit," and "Heart Shaped Box" is the better song. Blink 182- "Dammit" Blink 182- "All The Small Things" Eh, but fuck these guys. Blur- "Song 2" Blur- "Girls and Boys" No contest there. Stone Temple Pilots- "Plush" Stone Temple Pilots- "Interstate Love Song" "Plush" is sort of the height of their Pearl Jam aping. "Interstate Love Song" is pleasant enough. Smashing Pumpkins- "Today" Smashing Pumpkins- "1979" Because of that commercial it's in now. Seal- "Crazy" Seal- "Kiss From A Rose" Fuck Batman. The Cranberries- "Dreams" The Cranberries- "Linger" I like both of these songs. Just like this one a little better. No Doubt- "Spiderwebs" No Doubt- "Don't Speak" I have an anecdote for this song! I'll get to it later. Alanis Morissette- "You Oughta Know" Alanis Morissette- "Ironic" I always found "Ironic" pretty annoying. This one's about sucking dicks and shit. Green Day- "Basket Case" Green Day- "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" Mmm. Really hate the other one. Oasis- "Wonderwall" Oasis- "Champagne Supernova" Great song. R.E.M.- "Losing My Religion" R.E.M.- "Everybody Hurts" This song was everywhere for a while. I never met Michael Stipe. No, I did not. Chumbawumba- "Tubthumping" Meredith Brooks- "Bitch" Not a fan of either song, but this one is less irritating. Tom Cochrane- "Life Is A Highway" Bush- "Glycerine" See above. Toad the Wet Sprocket- "All I Want" Third Eye Blind- "Semi-Charmed Life" Also about sucking dicks and shit. Black Crowes- "Jealous Again" Blind Melon- "No Rain" Didn't ever really like this band, but the bee video is the '90s. 2 Legit Bracket Aerosmith- "Cryin'" TLC- "Waterfalls" For Left Eye. En Vogue- "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" Soundgarden- "Black Hole Sun" Was on MTV every fifteen minutes in the summer of 1994. MC Hammer- "U Can't Touch This" Vanilla Ice- "Ice Ice Baby" Vanilla Ice did not, to the best of my knowledge, have a Saturday morning cartoon show. Skee-Lo- "I Wish" Spacehog- "In The Meantime" Fond memories of both of these. That Spacehog album was terrible. Salt-N-Pepa- "Shoop" Naughty By Nature- "O.P.P." My niece my witness, I was actually pretty fond of this song when it came out. Took me a decade to figure out all the innuendo. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince- "Summertime" The Verve Pipe- "The Freshmen" No contest. Certainly the highlight of Will Smith's recording career. Britney Spears- "...Baby One More Time" 2Pac- "California Love" Yeah, great song. Spice Girls- "Wannabe" The Fugees- "Killing Me Softly With His Song" Great song. Think I still have this album. No idea why. I've never listened to it. Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Doggy Dogg)- "Nuthin But A G Thang" Bryan Adams- "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" Fuck yeah. Although the Bryan Adams song gets some points for being used on Arrested Development. Barenaked Ladies- "One Week" The Verve- "Bittersweet Symphony" Rather like that Verve song, and "One Week" is my least favorite song ever. Better Than Ezra- "Good" Beastie Boys- "Sabotage" Good song, great video. The Cardigans- "Lovefool" Spin Doctors- "Two Princes" Great song. Terrible album. Tracy Chapman- "Give Me One Reason" Offspring- "Self Esteem" Hrm. For my trailer park roots, I guess. Eagle-Eye Cherry- "Save Tonight" Soul Asylum- "Runaway Train" Such a weird song, because it's a cynical grab at mainstream fame at probably the only moment when they could have gotten away with not doing something like that. The album it's on is garbage, too. Mark Cohn- "Walking In Memphis" Semisonic- "Closing Time" Some fond memories of this shitty song. That "Walking In Memphis" guy got shot in the head. Collective Soul- "Shine" Red Hot Chili Peppers- "Under The Bridge" Not a fan of RHCP, but this song is pretty good. Damn! I Wish I Was Your Bracket Counting Crows- "Mr. Jones" Radiohead- "Creep" Bad Radiohead beats peak Counting Crows. Outkast- "Rosa Parks" Presidents of the United States of America- "Lump" Although I admittedly did not know this song until a few years after the fact. Cracker- "Low" Pearl Jam- "Evenflow" Grunge. Sheryl Crow- "All I Wanna Do" New Radicals- "You Get What You Give" Hate that fucking Sheryl Crow song. Talking in music: Don't do it. Pras (ft. Maya & ODB)- "Ghetto Superstar" Joan Osborne- "One Of Us" Yeah. Sinead O'Connor- "Nothing Compares 2 U" Dishwalla- "Counting Blue Cars" Sinead certainly did seem to be doable at the time, although she's far from it today. This song always makes me tear up. And the video...forget about it. The Divinyls- "I Touch Myself" Nada Surf- "Popular" Think so. Kinda liked this one at the time. Marcy Playground- "Sex and Candy" Faith No More- "Epic" The fish. The piano. Extreme- "More Than Words" Guns N Roses- "November Rain" Very long video. Lots of stuff going on. Deep. Arrested Development- "Tennessee" Lisa Loeb- "Stay (I Missed You)" I couldn't vote against this. Seminal. Everclear- "Santa Monica" Hootie and the Blowfish- "I Only Wanna Be With You" Fuck Everclear. Worst band at the whole chili cookoff. Harvey Danger- "Flagpole Sitta" Ben Folds Five- "Brick" Fun song. Fastball- "The Way" Garbage- "Only Happy When It Rains" The girl from Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles was in this band! Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy" Juvenile- "Back That Azz Up" My eyes hurt. Foo Fighters- "Everlong" 4 Non Blondes- "What's Up" Certainly the best Foo Fighters song.

    '90s Song Tournament Nominations

I think I'll do this in a separate thread, just for ease of navigation. So, again, songs must have been released at some point in the '90s. Singles are preferable, but I'll accept well-known non-singles. Surely we can all come up with 20 or so songs that we'd like to nominate, but I'm willing to accept as few or as many nominations as you can come up with. Comments and justifications are welcome, but not mandatory. And to get the ball rolling, here's my list of what I fear will be fairly traditional rockist '90s hits that I liked between the ages of 6 and 16: Nirvana- "In Bloom" Smashing Pumpkins- "Today" Beck- "The New Pollution" Soundgarden- "Black Hole Sun" Toad the Wet Sprocket- "Fall Down" Pavement- "Cut Your Hair" The Breeders- "Cannonball" Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy" Blur- "Coffee and TV" Fiona Apple- "Criminal" Fountains of Wayne- "Radiation Vibe" Nine Inch Nails- "Closer" Pulp- "Common People" Radiohead- "Karma Police" R.E.M.- "Losing My Religion" Weezer- "Buddy Holly" PJ Harvey- "Down by the Water" Ace of Base- "The Sign" Hanson- "Mmmbop" (for Inc) Cranberries- "Zombie"
