Guest Downhome Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 In all seriousness, what is the purpose of the tag titles even being around? Yeah, Billy and Chuck had them for quite some time (I don't even think of the Rico/Rikishi thing as I never saw any purpose in that period), and now Hogan and Edge have them, but so what? We have the straps, but there is not a division at all. It seems just totally pointless to me to have the titles at this point in time, other than just for the sake of them "being there". I mean, damn, this is making me wish for more Hardyz/E&E matches or something, anything than what we have now. I wonder what the WWE's reasoning is in not having a division anymore anyhow. I mean, they have TONS of wrestlers, but no tag teams. What in the hell is their reason for this? Please, if anyone can answer, I'm more than willing to hear you out. Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Guest Vitamin X Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Well the reason for Hogan & Edge winnign the tag titles is so we can get Angle/Jericho vs. Hogan/Edge for the tag titles...yeah? And as for the tag division, well, you see...I HATE tag team matches, I don't remember ever finding one entertaining in my life. So do away with the division and all tag team wrestling for all I care.
Guest Human Fly Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I think one of the problems right now is that the WWE is too concerned with getting new singles stars over, so the Tag division has been pushed to the back burner. The division has been stale for a while, and lately it has been almost non-existent. Billy & Chuck spent as much time wrestling singles as tag it seemed like lately. The division will stay in it's holding pattern until some new teams come up or get formed.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Wwf wants to get new stars like Sean O'haire, and Johnny the Bull over. Wwf needs to improve their tag team division. Hmm, what could they do??? PS: Isn't it funny how the announcers have TOTALLY forgotten about the Ricoshi tag team of yestermonth?
Guest TheHulkster Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Raw has a stronger tag division (the New Dudleys, the Hardys, Benoit & Guerrero, Booker T & Goldust, Xpac & Big show), but the show with two tags teams has the belts. I hope they just find a way to bring the Tag belts over to Raw and put the Euro or IC Belt on Smackdown.
Guest razazteca Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 well if the Split does not exist anymore why not have the tag team champs defend the belts on RAW. If HHH can join the nWo why not start an angle of nWo vs the tag champs?
Guest Big McLargeHuge Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I don't know why they didn't just institute a rule where most (if not all) champions could be on both shows. Or, since Smackdown's women's division is Torrie and Stacey, just have the women's title exclusive to one show and have the tag champs float between shows.
Guest Downhome Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I don't know why they didn't just institute a rule where most (if not all) champions could be on both shows. It is a little thing called "wanting and trying to piss Downhome the hell off", that's why.
Guest razazteca Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Booker T & Golddust is probably the most over tag team on RAW, I believe that they deserve a shot at the tag team titles. Booker T & Goldust vs Xpac & Show is getting tiresome, besides with nearly the whole roster of nWo being injured now, the funny hijinks of Golddust need someone else to mock. Who else is better to mock then the current tag team champs?
Guest Trivia247 Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I think we as Smarks need to plan a little Staged Ambush. Whenever Vince McMahon comes on Byte this We should all Call up the show and one by on ask him Yo what about the Tag team division? Why can't you put the belts on both shows? WTF is the Matter with yuo Vinnie Mac??? You got the same hatred of the Tag division as Eric Biscoff did?? Should we call you Eric Vinnie Mac Biscoff???? Answer uss!!! lol
Guest Creepy Crawl Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 To me the Tag Team Champs dont mean a damn thing . They are just throwing the teams together that dont make any sense . One week Val and Hardcore had been waiting to tag up for years and the next week what do ya know Val is with Orton again ????? The Val and Orton team would work because they have used those two together before if they could come up with some type of gimmick or good storyline for them . Another team I think would be good for the tag division is Lance Storm and Christian , its obvious they arent gonna get a shot at any of the singles titles any time soon . They just need to do something and do it quick just thank God they got them off the BUTT pirates . The tag titles died when the roster split took place I mean they did break up 2 of the only few legitimate tag teams they had . I just dont know anymore
Guest RickyChosyu Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 And as for the tag division, well, you see...I HATE tag team matches, I don't remember ever finding one entertaining in my life. So do away with the division and all tag team wrestling for all I care. That's a pretty restricting point of view. There are tons and tons and tons of tag matches that are better than any singles match you'll see on Raw, ever. To say nothing with more than two people in it is worth watching limits you more than you'll ever know as far as seeing good matches. Oh well, to each his own. There are plenty of tag teams on Smackdown, but not as much as on Raw. For now, I see Edge/Hogan facing Anlge/Jericho as a heat-up type match but the first actual threat to their belts will probably be the Canadian Mafia. Now, this could be a problem since Edge is Canadian, but they can cover that up in any number of ways. Plus he has the history with all three membes, so any combination will do (but I would prefer Christian/Storm). Anyway, Bautista/D-Von are always there to challenge, and Billy and Chuck aren't exactly destined for bigger and better things, are they? It's bad, but fixable, with time and effort.
Guest GenerationNever Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I agree, they should just do away with the tag titles.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Hmm, that is an interesting point Rikicho, I wouldn't be surprised to see Storm and Christian go after Edge for siding with the 'real american' in hulk hogan, that would draw A LOT of heat and be a nifty match to watch (considering that Storm and Christian would bump their asses off for Hogan). The really Ironic thing about the Wwf having a shitty tag division is this... THE WWF DOES TAG TEAM WRESTLING THE BEST! Honestly, the Wwf knows how to do tag wrestling better than they do any other division, but they don't bother making any credible teams. That bothers me and makes me laugh at the same time.

I don't think that's the case at all. I think tag team matches for the most part are jsut a way of puttign two feuds together at teh same time to give a glimpse of what it could be like on pay per view. That's the purpose most tag team matches serve to me anyways, such as like when I see crap like Edge/Hogan vs. Jericho/Angle, or that ridiculous women's tag match Linda/Trish vs. Jackie/Molly. Most other tag teams are jsut thrown together and it's more or less kinda pointless unless for the purpose I just said above there. The only time tagging was ever entertaining to me was of course the Dudleys-Hardyz-Edge&Christian feuds. But that got old and tiresome quickly, along with each team themselves, and all of them minus the Hardyz (though with Jeff showing some promise this might change) have split up. So the only two real true teams we have are the Hardyz vs. Billy & Chuck. Yay. This isn't necessarily a restricting point of view, it's just that tag matches tend to suck more than singles matches do. In the course of history, the best tag team matches are not even in the same LEAGUE as the best singles matches. Want to prove me wrong? Try me.
Guest Razor Roman Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I think they're using the tag belts right now to re-ignite some singles feuds. Like they have done often before.. (The Canadian Chrises vs 2 Man Power Trip.... Austin/HBK/Dude Love, etc...) Seriously, would't you guys love to see Edge put his current tag partner through the proverbial "Barber Shop Window" ?
Guest Goodear Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Razor has actually stepped right the moment where tag team wrestling first took is turn towards the hell that it has become. The breakup of The Rockers was angle so well ochastrated that it has basically poisoned just about every tag team since with the idea that eventually every team has to break up in a spectacular fashion. I cannot say how many times I have seen people mention a tag team and then seen the immediately mention about how they should break up and how one of the memebers should go on to superstardom in the singles rank. Well, back in the day, tag team were formed with the express purpose of being, get this, tag teams. The members of those tag teams were simply good at tag team work and may not have been able to get over on their own. Could Ricky Morton get over without Robert Gibson? Could Bobby Eaton get over without Stan Lane? Ax without Smash? Animal without Hawk? Jasques Rougeau without Pierre Oulette or his brother Raymond? These guys were made for tag teaming. That is what they did. And they were phenominal at it! But since The Rockers, people have become obsessed with breaking up tag teams, and that is a bad thing. Because not every worker in the world is meant for singles glory. Some are meant for tag team glory. And that should not be considered a step back by anyone.
Guest Razor Roman Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Animal without Hawk? Insert "Ric Flair's Big Surprise" joke here. :-)
Guest humongous2002 Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 The weewee breaks up one of the greatest WWF teams in Edge & Christian so they could have Edge win the tag titles a year later with that red and yellow fossil. ARRRRRGHHH! Stop the INSANITY! WWE booking has no logic.
Guest Goodear Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 The weewee breaks up one of the greatest WWF teams in Edge & Christian so they could have Edge win the tag titles a year later with that red and yellow fossil. ARRRRRGHHH! Stop the INSANITY! WWE booking has no logic. See the logic is, Edge & Hogan isn't really a "tag team" but a "pair of superstars that won tag gold so they'll have at least one more tag match together". It's not going to be a permenant thing just like the 15 tag teams with Steve Austin in them that won tag team gold weren't.
Guest jester Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Well, back in the day, tag team were formed with the express purpose of being, get this, tag teams. That is what they did. And they were phenominal at it! You're really on to something here. How many guys does the WWE have just floating around doing nothing in particular? Creating new tag teams would give them something to do. It's a good way of pairing up guys who may not be over enough for a singles push. Also, if you've got a wrestler with good mike skills but not so great ringwork, and a good worker who can't do promos, pairing them helps them build off each other. Maybe they even eventually learn some things that help them for a future singles push. And you don't need to give them all a massive story to follow. Just wanting the belt makes sense enough. Although, Hogan & Edge do provide an opportunity to build a massive heel tag team. The crowd, much as it pains me, was loving Hogan. Any tag team that works those two over would get massive heel heat. jester
Guest Razor Roman Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I agree, Jester. I think that Hogan/Edge will be used to build up some heels. Wether it's a Heel tag team, or perhaps be used to turn Edge heel so he can feud with Hogan.
Guest LesnarLunatic Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I'd make the following tag teams for competition on Smackdown. Al Snow and Maven D-Von and Deacon Bautista Billy and Chuck Christian and Test Faarooq and Mark Henry Hardcore Holly and Val Venis (Hardcore Porn babay!) Albert and Hugh Morrus Randy Orton and John Cena and teams for RAW Goldust and Booker T X-Pac and Big Show Spike and Bubba Nowinski and Regal soon, they could end up in some angle where there is some sort of double pin during a Hogan/Edge-Angle/Jericho match. (Hogan over Angle, Jericho over Edge, for example). Then for the rematch on Smackdown, Edge gets beat up in the back, and Hogan loses 2 on 1 to Angle and Jericho. Angle and Jericho then have the belts stripped from them and put up in a tournament of 13 teams (A and J, the Smackdown teams and the Raw teams) In the tourney, 3 teams get byes to the second round (Angle and Jericho, Billy and Chuck and Booker/Goldust) the tourney can go.. Angle/Jericho have a bye Hardcore Porn (Holly and Venis) beat Albert and Morrus Christian and Test defeat Faarooq and Mark Henry Maven and Al Snow defeat Nowinski and Regal Orton and Cena defeat D-Von and Batista Billy and Chuck get a bye X-Pac and Show defeat Spike and Bubba Booker/Goldust get a bye then.. Angle and Jericho over Hardcore Porn Maven and Snow over Christian and Test Billy and Chuck over Orton and Cena Goldust and Booker over NWO Angle and Jericho over Maven and Snow Goldust and Booker over Billy and Chuck Goldust and Booker over Angle and Jericho to win the titles. How about that?
Guest M Nyland Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 yeah...that MIGHT work...if the bookers were competent enough to think it up and remember it
Guest Austin3164life Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 It would make sense if Booker T/Goldust went after Hogan/Edge since they're both Main Event teams (somewhat). I can imagine Goldust's impression of the Orange Goblin right now. Booker T and Edge are no strangers so it wouldn't be illogical for those four to go at it......
Guest LesnarLunatic Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Despite both teams being faces and all. and despite the fact that Booker and Goldust would be booed madly against Hogan and Edge

Rockn' Roll Express feud is a keeper, and tag teams like the Fantastics and the Malenko's have put on some of the best matches I've ever seen, too. The Bulldogs, the Hart Foundation, all great stuff. Then there's Japan, with matches like Misawa/Kawada Vs. Jumbo/Taue, Misawa/Kobashi Vs. Kawada/Taue, and Misawa/Akiyama Vs. Kawada/Taue. In M Pro the tag matches were always way better than the singles matches. Some of the six, eight, and ten man tags were amazing, not to mention the straight tag matches. Incredible. Many people can elaborate on this. Go to the foreign board, or the old school board, and they can name off COUNTLESS tag team matches that are worth watching, and some that are quite possibly the best matches ever. Tag team wreslting isn't always just too singles stars put together against whoever they're feuding with. The WWE does it like that a lot, but not always. Hell, Jericho/Benoit Vs. Ausitn/HHH was my pick for MOTY last year. Just an awesome match, that used the tag team format to make it even better than it would have been split appart. Trust me, tag team wrestling can be a very good thing. Really.
Guest Austin3164life Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 Reasons why there should be a tag team division....... -Austin/Michaels vs. Owen/Bulldog -Owen/Bulldog vs. Furnas/LaFon -Austin/HHH vs. Jericho/Benoit -TLC 3 -E&C vs. Hardyz (Ladder Match, No Mercy) That is all

When you said this, it reminded me of last year when the WWF kept trying to make the team of Big Show & Billy Gunn sound interesting (remember the "Show-Gunns"?). That's the perfect example of pairing up guys who had nothing to do and didn't really merit singles pushes, and yet it still did nothing for either man. Normally, when random people are teamed up it's either for a job or a one-time "PPV preview" match. Has there ever been a team where it was random people teamed up and it ended up working pretty well, and was over with the fans? And the Hogan/Edge win was just hog-wash. That really angered me, but then again, it was the 4th of July, and with Hogan coming out to "Real American" I should've realized the cheap heat finish from the beginning.

Watch the Rock & Roll Express, the Steiner Brothers, Lex Luger/Sting or the Midnight Express in the NWA/WCW. The Rockers, Pillman/Austin, Wings (Owen Hart and Brian Pillman) or The Hart Foundation in the WWF, the Von Erichs & The Freebirds in World Class. And you'll see some great matches. At it's best, Tag Team Wrestling is better than any singles matches you can ever get (ok, maybe not Flair/Steamboat!), we just haven't seen Tag Team Wrestling at it's best since 1996.
