Guest justcoz Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Just an observation but I personally feel that Jerry and JR offer nothing to WWE's current product. Their act has grown very old and it's hurting the product from taking a new creative direction. Just like ABC revamps Monday Night Football's announce team when ratings are down, WWE needs to realize that sometimes the times require change. Bring in Joey Styles and use either Tommy Dreamer, Kevin Nash (since he's apparently finished in the ring), Raven or DDP on color.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Joey Styles is worthless. Only ECW fans could actually think he has any skill at all.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I echo HMW's sentiments. Joey Styles sucks ass.
Guest Army Eye Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 What do YOU look for in a play-by-play guy? Styles calles moves. Ross does about half the time. Cole never does. Styles already declined a job offer from the WWE by the way.
Guest justcoz Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Okay, if Joey Styles sucks ass then let me ask, where do you get a new crop of wrestling announcers from? The homegrown WWE approach has failed with Cole and Coach (although I think there is potential there, I can't see him as the lead play by play man). Seriously, you seem to be in agreement that JR and King need replaced- you didn't defend their positions. Who do you replace them with? I would seriously pick Mike Tenay over Joey Styles but Tenay is with NWA TNA and I would assume signed. A WWE styles wouldn't be quite the same as the ECW version. For one, he'd have a color man and wouldn't be screaming by himself throughout and entire show. He'd be less annoying right there. He has familiarity with those who enjoyed ECW, knows holds and can call moves correctly and can be campy and serious. I think he is the only candidate who could convincingly become the voice of WWE just as Gorilla and JR. I know that Styles turned down an offer because of the travel involved. Well, if you put him on Raw, that's one night a week he'd be required to travel. Let JR and King remain on the PPV broadcasts to give those shows a special feel and all of us a month's break from their commentating team which seem as uninspired with the product these days as Stone Cold...
Guest thebigjig Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I didn't like Style's work in ECW, but I would actually like to see him in the WWE. It would be a nice change
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Really, I don't see ANY of the big name announcers/color guys(JR, King, Styles, Gertner) as being any good whatsoever. Personally, I've always hated Styles' voice because he sounded like a geek whenever he yelled and that trademark "Oh my God!" got tiresome after 99 much like Styles himself. I listened to the guy for 5 years and can safely say that I don't like him at all.
Guest mickberna Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Agreed. Styles sucked. What they need to do is find a good sports announcer who is a big fan, and knows the moves inside and out... and I think, maybe, for once, they could find someone with an "announcer" voice. You know. Deep. Authoritive. Not a wuss voice like Cole, Kelly, Lloyd, Coach, and so forth. JR only works because he's a hick. The other guys just sound like wimps. (Kevin Kelly still kicks ass, though.)
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I like Styles He called the moves HE sounded like he gave a shit about the product What I wouldn't give to hear that again. Oh wait...Mike Tenay is on NWATNA...nevermind. He's my favorite announcer now. Woooooo Mike Tenay for everyone!
Guest Big McLargeHuge Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I can tolerate JR. His level of emotion is still better than anyone elses these days, not there's anyone to compare. Lawler is just not right for the part of heel commentator at this point. He's a tweener. Bring back Heyman. I want true heel commentary. I'll admit I did enjoy Styles' 'Oh. My. God.' Especially when in full on 'I'm so shocked I can't yell' mode.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Heyman was the best heel commentator... he ruled, because he was actually a HEEL COMMENTATOR... not like Lawler, who is a "tweener" heel commentator but sucks up when the big faces or women come out. I'd love to see Raven back on commentary as well, but if he'd rather wrestle, I'll still support him, but Raven was a good commentator because he not only called the moves, but he explained why they were good to use in the match. Plus, he was another heel commentator that was, you know, a HEEL COMMENTATOR.

I, for one, would love to have one of those come over to the barracks when I'm watching wrestling, so that I wouldn't have to listen to the hell that is Lawler, Cole, et al.
Guest Razor Roman Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I said it before, and I'll say it again. Mick Foley should be a WWE Play by Play guy. He has a great voice for it, and he knows the moves and psychology of a match.
Guest jimmy no nose Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 You know they're not going to fire JR. He'll be around until he can't do it anymore.

It made it look even more impressive after he did it. Lawler was supporting the heel more, even if he did forget he was a heel whenever a superface or something with hooters walked into the arena. You're right about Heyman. Great heel commentator. He was the master of the "good annoying". Just noticeably annoying so that you hate him in a good way, not "real annoying" like Lawler and his "My nuts have alligator clamps on them---hey puppeeeezzzzzz!" voice he always does. jester
Guest Kid Kablam Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 You know they're not going to fire JR. He'll be around until he can't do it anymore. that's the thing.... he can't also, I think that Styles would make a good play by play anouncer. I mean, true, his "Oh My God" was annoying but would you rather have OMG or "Puppies!" or Scalded Dog or Government Mule?
Guest chirs3 Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 JR/Heyman would be the ideal pairing. Raven should stay far far away from an announcing booth.
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Joey Styles has this bush league sound to him...wait, he was. And how can you say he is calling moves correctly: What the fuck is a tiger bomb? And why is every powerbomb, tiger bomb, and/or tiger suplex called it? He sucks, he is annoying. And his catchpharse of "Oh, my, GOD!" was so fucking annoying. I stopped watching ECW on TNN because of his voice.
Guest mach7 Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Joey Styles is worthless. Only ECW fans could actually think he has any skill at all. Finally someone agrees with me!!

I can't stand Joey's voice, but in his defense, Tiger Bomb/Driver/Suplex are original Japanese names for the moves. They usually involve a double-underhook of the arms. The Tiger Suplex was used a lot by Tiger Mask back in the day. I'm not sure about the origins of the Tiger Bomb/Driver names.

Everytime someone would do a double-underhook powerbomb Styles would call it as a "Tiger Bomb" when in reallity its a "Tiger Driver".To my knowledge there is no such thing as a "Tiger Bomb".
Guest Prince Paul Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 I miss Heyman in the booth. He was great. Heyman before Wrestlemania X-7: "It's the walls of DOINK!"
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Posted July 9, 2002 Report Posted July 9, 2002 Heyman was great because he'd point out flaws in JR's cheerleading and JR would get all pissy, but couldn't argue back because Heyman was right. And I think Tenay would be great in wwe. I always liked his work in wcw and he should be brought in right away.
