New idea to shake things up

Instead of the current format, with a handful of championships that -- with the exception of the Undisputed belt -- don't really mean anything to anyone (the European title being defended in Philly?) why not do a "season" format, with a tournament at the end to crown one champion?

Think of it like college basketball. You'd still have the two shows, RAW and Smackdown, as they are. You'd have feuds and matches PPVs and all of that, but this would be like a "regular season."

But towards the end of the season, the 64-man tournament for the WWE Championship starts. They'd have seeds and everything, which gives the "regular season" soem kind of importance. For example, No. 1 seeds Undertaker, Rock, Angle and HHH would face No. 16 seeds Tommy Dreamer, Brooklyn Brawler, Crash and Sean Stasiak in the first round.

The tourney would finish at Wrestlemania, where we'd get the Elite Eight played out and a champion crowned, which is good for 7 matches at the PPV. The other matches could be random matches between guys who are feuding but were eliminated from the tourney (like Edge vs. Lance Storm or something).

Better yet, they could even have a Tag Team tournament as well, which would also culminate at Wrestlemania.

Then they take a few months off, and start again the next season. The champ gets to carry around a belt, but there are no title matches. The belt can only be won or lost in next year's Final Four.

I think this could work and might help the creative direction of the company. How many feuds have been dropped or altered because you had to worry about the IC or Euro champ not jobbing or something like that.

I love the idea, but I feel they should still have titles durring the season, and have the end of the "season" thing to be this one huge title that everyone just works their ass off for, finals could be at the December PPV. They then take off just a couple of weeks for Christmas and New Years, and then in Jan. they begin the next year/season.

Fans aren't going to buy tickets to shows if they know that title changes will only take place at WrestleMania.

Why wouldn't they?

For one, it's not like anyone gives a shit about the European, Cruiserweight, Hardcore, and Women's titles. The IC title is pretty much the "Best Non-Main Eventer Title," and the Tag division is in shambles.

Also, most of the WWE's top (as in popularity) matches in recent memory weren't for any title, such as the Austin/HHH 2/3 falls match. If you build a feud well enough, there doesn't have to be a belt involved.

Actually I think they should keep the titles but make them mean something, such as reward the European, Light Heavyweight, Hardcore and Intercontinental Champs with title shots for the Undisputed Title. We all saw how entertaining the Hardy v Undertaker match would be. Have the Und. Champ continue to face the headliners at ppv like Jericho, HHH, Angle and Rock, but at least reward the other wrestlers and make them think that being champ at least gets you a shot on Raw or Smackdown. One last thing is to make the Tag Team champs appear at both shows as it is a "world" title and thus shoul be given a chance. Imagine Hogan/Edge v Dudleys, or Benoit/Guerrero or even Booker T/Golddust.

On that vein it would mean that UT would have to face different styles in defending his belt, like Flair used to when there used to be territories, and give the fans at least different championship matches such as current champs RVD/Hardy/Bradshaw/Knoble or former champs Regal/Guerrero/Booker T/ Hurricane. Tell me smarks wouldn't love to have seen Guerrero get a shot at UT when he was Inter... champ!

Just my two cents worth....

European title should be renamed the Canadian title. They have a million Canadian wrestlers and 1 European wrestler. They also go to Canada more often than Europe.

I would just drop the Euro- and Hardcore titles and make it the TV title. Anyone who holds it HAS to defend it on both of the major TV shows, RAW & Smackdown. And, of course PPV's.

Only problem with this, WWE would give it to Bradshaw and have him stink it all up when they could have someone like Eddie or Storm hold it and have killer matches with anyone and any style.

As long as the Canadian title has DECALS~!!, I'm there. I actually renamed the European title the Canadian title in WrestleMania2000.

If the wwe were to do the season idea, I'd want them to keep the titles, but have them earn a certain seed in the tournament. The four top seeds would be awarded to those who hold the 4 singles titles (Undisputed, IC, Cruiser, and the "North American" title. The European and Hardcore belts would be retired, and the NA would replace them.) Former champs would be seeded high, rookies low.

OK, if you don't emphasize in-ring competition and belts, which basically even with little meaning still give a sense of direction and upward movement, what do you emphasize?

If your gonna have a big shake up of the Championships belts, there is no point it changing the format of the whole WWF.

Cos if the idea fails, then all the belts will look weak.

I think the WWF should do a fricking huge tournament for the belt every year, with 64 or 128 guys, maybe even to do cross-promotional with Japan and Mexico. They could just call it The World Championships or something. Put the current champ in at a #1 seed, seed down to 32, and do a Wimbledon thing with qualifiers, wildcards chosen by the management, and lucky losers. Do the first three rounds on RAW and SmackDown, maybe the Round of 16 at the PPV, and the Quarter-Finals and onward from there. I think it would be awesome, especially if they play it up as being the best out of 64+ competitors for the belt.

It might be fun, but the fact that this is not a legitimate sport and is instead a sort of performance wouldn't bode well. Do you honestly think that the writers now would plan ahead a 128-man tournament? Figuring out exactly what brackets would make what match-ups in the qualifiers...or the quarterfinals...and so on?

Another problem: what does anybody get out of this? No one gives two shits about who makes it to the semi-finals of the NCAA tournament, and on a WWF platform, who the hell cares who made it to the semis in KotR? This wouldn't be any different. You either get one of two results: you spend a ton of time giving the title/tournament victory/whatever to well-established guy like Rock/HHH/Taker/Angle who really didn't need it, or you give it to someone like Edge, RVD, Booker, Benoit, Brock, someone "on the verge," taking a helluva lot longer than necessary to give them that big win, when a decent 2-3 month feud with a compelling storyline would do the job better in much less time.

In short: too much time for too little pay-off.

I like the idea. But I would also have two Television titles, one for the RAW brand and the other for the Smackdown! brand. I'd also tone down the PPVs.

Or you take the Ivanisevic apparoach and give it to Lance Storm.

It would never go over well enough to work. Especially the internation flare would never bod well with Vince.

Don't forget that it is a planned event with outcomes determined...so HHH is planned to win lets say and tears his quad again...oh shit there goes the last 3 months of build...tiem to hotshot...

Gay idea.

To me that was way funnier than it should have been.

I like the season idea, but would still keep the undisputed title.. the W/L/T records would determine top contender(s)..

it would bring more attention to house shows along the lines of this

JR: Well RVD has a tough weekend series againt Xpac this week.. he needs at least 2 out of 3 to work his way back up the standings"
