What Vince needs to realize...

Vince needs to realize that there is no "quick fix" solution to lighting the wrestling business on fire again. Whatever the solution IS, it's not going to be quick...it's going to be a slow burn. When the business started to decline following WrestleMania III in 1987, it was 11 years before business sky-rocketed again. You can't just sign a big name and expect the ratings to shoot through the roof.

Hasn't this been said by a few dozen people a couple million times already.

I totally agree. I think most of us do. That's why we all get pissed about them dropping Storylines and depushing guys. And, Bringing back all the older guys and putting the money into them.

And here's another question: did Vince really kill WCW, or did WCW kill him? Let's face it, when Steve Austin pinned The Rock's shoulders to the mat at WrestleMania X-7, Vince and the WWE were on top of the world. They had just set a brand-new attendance record at the Astrodome, did a monstrous buyrate for Mania, and were drawing great numbers on the new TNN. Then, with the WCW/ECW InVasion angle -- which was supposed to be every wrestling fan's ultimate dream -- everything went downhill. Makes you wonder if Vince would still be on top of the world if he had left WCW dead and buried and brought in the new talent without an "invasion" angle.

Wrestling eras are made and broken by feuds. It was the Hogan/Andre feud that got Hulkamania really kicking into gear, and it was (I believe) the Austin/Bret Hart feud that started to revolutionize things again in the late ninetees. Hogan vs. Andre at WM 3 changed things because Andre hadn't lost a match in 15 years up until then, and he was immovable. Hulk slammed him. Hulkamania ran wild in that era. Fast forward about a decade. Bret Hart had been established as the most respected and best wrestler. Here comes a guy who spits in the face of respect, and who has ability to outwrestle the best. Austin's attitude begins to get over with the now much older wrestling audience, and Bret Hart's old-school attitude isn't cutting it. WM XIII rolls around, and wrestling changes forever. WM 3 and WM 13 are the events which changed the WWE's direction and catapulted them to new heights. I'd be suprised if at WM 23 the Main Event is Kurt Angle vs. The Rock to kick off a new era or something....

I think that if Brock beats The Rock, or Angle makes him tap, people might start talking like they did when Austin wouldn't give up in the Sharpshooter.

Damnit, there better be new guys in the Main Event by WM23, LoL. Angle and Rock will be both Mid - Upper 30's by then.

I know what you meant though.

The two most vivid moments in wrestling history to a lot of people are these...

For the fans of the 80's era: Hulk Hogan bodyslamming and defeating Andre the Giant and cementing his immortality status. 93 thousand fans are chanting Hogan's name.

For the fans of the 90's era: Steve Austin bleeding profusely in the irreversible Sharpshooter. Austin refuses to submit, and passes out. After the match when Austin walks out, 20 thousand fans are chanting his name.

These are the kind of moments that define pro-wrestling eras....

WrestleMania 23?! That's five years from now. I think Angle would be 39 or 40, and Rock would be 35.

someone asked what killed WCW.

There were 2 people that killed WCW

1. Kevin Nash

2. Steve Austin

It's funny that they didn't get along...they made such a good team

"Bret Hart had been established as the most respected and best wrestler. Here comes a guy who spits in the face of respect, and who has ability to outwrestle the best. "

I don't recall Austin ever outwrestling Bret Hart. I mostly remember Bret either outwrestling him (Survivor Series 96) or outbrawling him (WM 13).

I don't think the WWF's business declined after WM 3 either. It stayed strong up until Hogan jobbed to the Warrior.

Right now the WWE is in a bind. I see absolutely nothing they can do that will generate interest. I think ironically the best thing that could happen would be for the NWA to get a real TV deal.

I take a look at who the WWE can push and there isn't anyone there who will draw truly huge money. Lesnar is not remotely going to draw at the moment, maybe not ever. Angle has had a couple of title reigns already so if he wins that is nothing to spark interest. Rock is not full time anymore and eventually his comebacks with grow tiresome. Edge might be ok as champ but he's already been so established as a mid carder and tag wrestler that he won't draw. RVD might have a chance, but I'm not sure either way.
