Cactus Bubba?

For those who have read Foley's Foley Is Good, do you remember this reference? Foley calls Bubba Ray Dudley the next Cactus Jack...

Personally, I can see SOME similarities, but it ends there. The only similarities being that they both can take great bumps, worked for ECW, and are pretty hefty guys. It about ends there. Any reason you guys know of for Foley calling Bubba "The Future Hardcore Icon"?

I never really got the reference either. They are both bigger guys but Buh Buh (I like that spelling better) doesn't even take the absurd bumps foley did. He bumped in the gimmick matches but Foley would take a ridiculous bump just walking down the aisle it seemed like. I figured he would know more about the persona then me however I just wish he would have elaborated a little.

I, too, like the Buh Buh spelling...but this is now McMahon-ized BUBBA. Without Brother Gertner, Dick, Sign Guy, and the occasional appearance of Jeff Jones and Jack Victory...it's just not Buh Buh. Without the tye-dye, it's not Buh Buh.

I can only assume that Mick knows a LOT more than we do.

He really doesn't call Bubba the next Cactus Jack, he says something like "Bubba, that blatant Cactus Jack ripoff. The cool thing is that Bubba will take this as a compliment".

Probably Foley just saw some similarities between his style and Bubba's, and said something about it, and Bubba thought it was cool.

there will never be another cactus jack. Bubba's bumping ability is great, but Foley's personality is legendary. I can see why he liked Bubba tho, he is a better worker than he often gets credit for.

"Hardcore Icon" - I really don't see what made Cactus a "hardcore icon" anyways. I mean, there were tons of other wrestlers over in FMW & the garbage leagues with him that were doing the exact same shit. How about Pogo? How about Kanemura? Mick is only a "hardcore icon" because he finally made it big in the WWF and they knew how to exploit his past. There'll never be another story like that, IMO. Wrestling has changed too much in the last 5 years.

Calling Buh Buh Ray Dudley the next hardcore icon, is as stupid as Al Snow's claim that he's the "Crown Prince of Hardcore." That's as much of a crock.

Mick's the "Hardcore Icon" because he took those bumps, but he also didn't just use the bumps and the barbed wire and the explosives and the fire to awe the crowd. He put intensity into his matches, as cliche as that word has become. When he was in the ring, it didn't look like he was just using a series of weapons in character...it looked like he really wanted to kill the other person.

Hence why Mick is more INTENSE~! than any other wrestler to hold the WWF Championship.

or you could say he had more.... ruthless aggression.

what an awkward phrase.

Foley's promo skills set him appart. Unlike others, he made the bumping and psychopath psychology all part of his character which was aided by the promo's he cut.

Totally agreed on the promo thing Ricky. The other point is that Foley wasnt's just doing in '94. Foley entered the indy scene and he was working on a different level than most American workers. What Foley was trying to do for the early part of his career was perfect the Puerto Rican style brawling we get out of Funk and Flair in 1989. Foley was using everything as weapons, brawling into the crowd, long before this caught on. There's a short phase in Japan really showing that he can work the same super bump, deathmatch style. And in the big feds, Foley is constantly perfecting this by bringing together lots of smaller bumps that seem less painful, but are really painful and degenrative, and putting that with a large area version of Puerto Rico where the brawling is contained for the fans. This guy is genius. And he perfected it really. And than he spawned it into characters.

Foley get a hardcore Icon reference to me because he actually had good all around matches with his hardcore...um...ess. Most of those guys in the FMW matches that you named, the matches sucked ASS. It was basically one guy throwing a guy on or hitting him with something and bleeding, he no sells it, does it to the other guy, repeat...repeat...drop the guy on his head on something...no sell...repeat. The matches were basically boring with some ohh and ahh spots. Foley could incorperate the ohh and ahhs in with psychology and a good match. That is what makes you great.

Off topic a little...I do agree that Bubba tough is getting better, but personally, I don't like him. A friend and I met him at a bar after a show. He was a real jerk to everyone...the ladies at the bar, and even yelled at a kid 4 feet from me. He's a dick.

Yeah, he is a ass. But Devon is one of the coolest guys that you could meet.

Yes, I met Devon and Spike too, who were both very nice. I can't understand why they'd hang out with a fuck like Bubba.

On the "Hardcore Icon" thing, sense I love to get off topic and what not, I'd give Mick the icon status because unlike everyone in FMW, he didn't suck in the ring and could actually do more then just lay there and bleed (Onita you fat bastard!)

But i'm sure thats already been said, I just wanted to say it again.

On the Buh Buh thing, I think he is fairly talented. Good bumper, doesn't do anything spectacular on offense but puts some real energy into everything he does. Other large men should take note.

Foley was enjoyable to me because he brought intensity to his matches. INstead of throwing some lame, halfhearted punches, he would throw them like he was really fghting the guy. He also knew how to work his spots into matches instead of just doing weak punches to lead to a spot. He also portrayed his gimmick well and made i believable. Bubba Ray doesn't do any of that stuff in my opinion. Maybe he used to be like Foley, but I don't see it anymore.
