Interview with RVD

by Matt Duda

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – July 15, 2002 – Besides being one of the most acrobatic superstars on the World Wrestling Entertainment roster, Rob Van Dam is a busy man outside the ring as well. WWE.com caught up with the Whole Dam Show to talk about some outside projects and the amazing Van Terminator he performed one week ago in Philadelphia.

WWE.com: I hear you just taped a second episode of “Ultimate Revenge” for TNN. How’d that go?

RVD: It was good. This time, the subject was myself playing a joke on one of my friends. It was my friend Justin McCully, one of my good friends, shoot fighter, pro wrestler. The joke was we did a mock game show pilot. So Justin thought that we were there to try to get this show off, to get a series. It pitted Justin and his fiancée against myself and my wife in these crazy contests that involved wacky stuff. Like Justin and I had to race to make pancakes and flip them over our shoulder and then our partner would catch the pancake and toss them into an actual real alligator’s mouth. It was crazy stuff like that and it was rigged so he couldn’t win and in front of a real studio audience. It was called “Do it or Else.” You would get one chance to do something and go on to the next round. But he would lose. He had to stick his face in a tub of worms. Hopefully it will come out funny. I had a lot of fun doing it. The host was the host from “Double Dare” (Marc Summers) and Ryan Seacrest, who’s everywhere now.

WWE.com: What else is going on with you these days?

RVD: Well, I still don’t know when “Black Mask 2” is going to be released. And I had to turn down possible opportunities just because of my schedule. There are some projects that are floating that have my interest that may or may not materialize.

WWE.com: And you’re working on a comic book too, right? Is that still going forward?

RVD: The comic book is something that definitely will materialize. I just want to make sure it’s done right. I’m not exactly sure when that will be, hopefully soon because that’s one my projects that I’m a lot more passionate about and that I’ve personally put a lot of energy into. It’s a comic that I wrote. Eventually, it’ll be like a monthly series. It’s a fictional story, you know, nothing to do with myself or real people. Right now we’re waiting to see what goes on between WWE and the comic book company basically.

WWE.com: The Van Terminator that you used on Paul Heyman last week was an incredible feat. This time, you had to carry the chair with you. Pretty crazy. Had you ever done that before?

RVD: I had not done that before. That added a challenge to it, which is the idea. I’ve been hearing for a year now, “When are you going to do the Van Terminator?” I’ve always said, “Well, one: I don’t have Fonzie to hold the chair for me. Two: Everyone’s already seen Shane-O do his version of it.” I would tell the fans that maybe it’s just too hardcore for right here. Maybe, but maybe not, but there’ll be a time when it’s appropriate. So in Philadelphia we definitely had an ECW kind of program in the show that was really strong and appropriate for Philadelphia. I figured if I’m going to do a Van Terminator, I’m not going to do Shane-O’s version of my move. So I figured I’d just do something that no one else has seen and come up with one to up the standards. So I carried the chair with me across the ring.

WWE.com: But come on. That had to be hard as hell.

RVD: (laughs) It’s within my limits.

Discuss... and erm, stuff.

Doesnt seem to enjoy Shane-O-Mac taking his move.

Even if you were the biggest RVD mark, would you really go and see "Black Mask 2"?

I wouldn't be very happy if someone from a larger stage stole a move that I created, used, and named. Wait..did Heyman credit it as the Van Terminator?

Anyway, Shane's was a piece of shite compared to RVD's. If Shane had carried the trash can with him, there may be reason for a discussion. Anyway, pretty interesting interview.

I'm glad that finally RVD has taken HIS move back. Long live the Van Terminator.

"Even if you were the biggest RVD mark, would you really go and see "Black Mask 2"? "

No

And RVD doesn't strike me as the type of person who cared. Shane did an impressive move...but the degree of difficulty wasn't as high.

So RVD just took it to another level.
