Even two years after David Arquette won the WCW Title, there is news about it.

 

Apparently the idea to give the title to Arquette was brought up by Tony Schiavone, who brought it up during a production meeting.

 

Upon hearing the idea, Vince Russo's eyes apparently "lit up" and he went on to use the idea in WCW.

While I dislike Tony, I will say that he was told to say that about Foley's win. He later apoligized to Foley, and the numbers later proved that not only did people watch Raw, but they turned off Nitro to watch Raw.

Schiavone responsible for the David Arquette fiasco... OH COME ON. Like we need another reason to hate Fat Tony. This just makes it too easy.

 

And for the record, I don't think Earl Hebner as champ would be QUITE as bad... at least he's been in the company and an active performer (albeit, as a referee) for 15 years or so.

I can picture the meeting went something like this:

 

Russo: ...and we need to play up the opening of Ready to Rumble. Any ideas?

 

Schiavone: We could have the cast come in and maybe do guest commentating.

 

Russo: Eh...Not bad. A little plain though. Why don't we have a couple of matches with them?

 

Shiavone: [Chuckling] Sure. Hell, why don't we just put the belt on David Arquette.

 

Russo: [Eyes Sparkle] Yeah....

 

Shiavone: Oh fuck.

Vince Russo actually talked about this on 1Wrestling.com before and I can understand why he did it.

 

WCW was going right downhill at the time and they needed Something, anything, to get them publicity. Someone said that they should put the belt on Arquette (you say that it was Schiavonne but Russo can't even remember who said it) and Russo thought that it might work to get them publicity. And it kind of did, their was a picture of Arquette with the Title in the New York Times the next day and it didn't knock their ratings at all.

 

Ok, I wouldn't exactly say that Arquette winning the Title was a good thing, but I can see why Russo did it and why Schiovanne (or whoever suggested it) thought it might be a good idea.
