was the Rock better as a Heel?

I was watching that Empty Arena match tween Rock and Mankind (horrible match I know) and I remembered just how much I liked the Rock in his heel role. Now, I know that the Rock never really "Turned" per se, it's just that people cheered him instead of booing him, but did anyone prefer him before he became a babyface?

Yes. He was infinately better as a heel when he was spouting a new catchphrase every week! Nowadays, while I still enjoy his promos, he doesn't seem to be as creative and relies on the same old shtick. I mean, when's the last time he came up with a new saying?

Yeah well, Rocky being a heel would be pretty dumb business-wise, regardless of the entertainment value. How many super-over faces do they have other than RVD? I think Edge, Booker, and Hogan are in pretty good spots, I just don't think they are over enough to be number ones in WWE right now. Especially considering that business is down, they need to keep someone around that the fans will route for no matter what.

There are no faces in WWE right now that are over enough and/or good enough on the mic to go head-to-head with Rock as a heel. He would just destroy them promo-wise and it would be embarassing to watch. Austin and Foley were strong enough faces to go up against The Rock, but RVD, Edge, Hogan, etc. arn't.

Rock was my favorite Heel aside from Luger in the 80's.

Personally: better as a heel (I loved Nation leader Rock...he totally ruled the school)

Business-Wise: I would have him as a face...the no. 1 face in the company

Yes, without a doubt, i loved him as a heel.

His feud with shamrock was brilliant, now he's just irritating.

THIS AINT SING-A-LONG WITH THE ROCK!

Rock, as a heel, was incredible. His work in the Nation was great, as was his heel corporation run.... but, without other mega-faces in the buisness, Rocks gotta stay face. Only heel heat Rock can get now is like Rock/Hogan and Rock/Flair heel heat. Likely this effect would only be seen in Canada as well.

"Likely this effect would only be seen in Canada as well. "

The irony being, that whenever Rock is up here in Canada as a heel, he's the most over guy by a long shot. Watch WWF Breakdown or Rock Bottom for an example, I'm pretty sure he was a heel during both.

Classic Rock quote:

"It looks like an Elephant just took a crap, and OUT CAME MANDKIND!"

Better Rock quote: "Look at this guy Kane. You put his brain in a parakeet and ZING! it flies backwards!"

When he was with the Nation before he was leader it was always classic stuff. The best was when he came out and gave everyone gifts. Mark Henry, D-Lo, and Godfather all got expensive watches. Faarooq got a picture of the Rock. Then Rock was at ringside during Faaroooq's match admiring the picture the whole time. When (either at the end of or after) Faarooq destroyed the picture Rock was crushed. It was great.

Oh I agree that now they have to keep him a face. I was just in a nostalgic mood. Business is business, and face Rock means that he can make his movies and do the whole crossover star thing.

of course he turned face.. the day after Wrestlemania XV he turned on Vince.

but, as a heel he WAS getting cheered a lot.

True, but I was more thinking of how he was getting babyface pops while still a heel.
