Guest El Psycho Diablo Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 Thinking back.. All the stupid pushes, backstage politics, and bad writing aside.. Could it become the WWE is too..predictable? Everybody knows Lesnar was going to win KotR, and will most likely win at Summerslam. Everybody gets their heat back, and it's blatantly obvious it's coming. Of course, then there are things like HBK showing up..and Eric Bischoff..that made people sit up and take notice. The fact that talent has switched brands so fast has taken that part of what could've been a major suprise away. I know it's not much..but is the fact things are so easy to call make anyone else not want to watch sometimes?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 The Wwf doesn't need to 'surprise' or 'keep em guessing', it is possible to intrigue and captivate the audience with SMART, WELL-THOUGHT-OUT, storylines. Of course that means a consisted effort which is too much to ask, so we get wacky surprises that don't have any legs and dies out in a month.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 I guess I should've elaborated. I don't really mean "suprise a week". It's just the fact when they do something, nine times out of ten, it's stupid. (HHH running over HBK. Boy, nobody saw that coming.) I agree with the well thought out storylines bit. However, what we're getting now, there's nothing really to look forward to. The people we want to see..(Ex. RVD. Gets a great reaction, crowd into the matches, etc..) go nowhere fast, while the ones nobody cares about..(Lesnar) gets pushed to the moon. Granted, it got lame after the WWE refused to pull the trigger..but while HHH was champ in 2000, and Rock was chasing him, the ratings stayed strong. Why? People hated Trips enough, and -wanted- to see Rock win. In my opinion, now is the wrong time to try to build another HHH-level heel. The indifference people show now are only going to drive them away. Yet they keep doing it. Am I the only one that sees a problem with this?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 I think I am the only person on this board that is for the Brock uber-push. Not because I like Brock, but because I like the direction they are going with it (hell, it IS direction and I am always for that) They build up Brock to build up the man who finally beats him. The fact that the Wwf is sticking to this vision (or hopefully will) is a sign that they are willing to buckle-down for the long-haul and commit themselves to long-term feuds and pushes and booking. I think the fact that they were booking on the fly that was killing them; they picked up and dropped so many feuds in the span of one year that fans began to lose confidence in the product. The Invasion was devoid of planning, and you could see it on tv. If a departure from the Russo-esque booking is what the Lesnar push symbolizes, then I am all for it. Heatless or not. Predictable or not.

This is...in a nutshell...the reason I think attendance is down. What is the point of going and rooting for someone, when that person never gets pushed to be a top guy?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 The Wwf were morons and are morons not to cash in on RVD. The man is (was) fresh to Wwf fans. Dynamic, interesting, unique, easy to watch. He could have been their goldberg. But unlike Goldberg, RVD wasn't able to slip through the cracks in the glass ceiling. He wasn't their pick, he wasn't their image... But he was the fans', and that is what should have mattered. I am happy to see RVD vs. Benoit on the Summerslam card, but I at the same time, am saddened to see it for the IC title stuck right in the mid card with both men being on opposite shows.

Guest Nevermortal Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 What's sad is that I truly believe that Brock could've be molded into something good, but not this soon. He's gotten it too soon, too fast, too unjustifiably. Dammit, why can't the Game-uh hold HIM down?
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted August 15, 2002 Report Posted August 15, 2002 I can't agree more with the WWE is too predictable now, and that it's one of the reasons that the numbers are down. I went on a long tangent about it a few weeks ago in a "what I hate about the WWE" thread, but basically I feel like a few years ago, you HAD to watch because you knew something was going to happen. Not necessarily a huge name debuting, or a major invasion or angle, but Austin would do something to Vince, or Foley would be coming back as CJM, or what have you. Know, I just need to watch the first 20 minutes (normally a boring interview) and from that can deduce who will win the main event, and who will be running in. Why should we tune in or pay for a PPV if there isn't any element of surprise?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 16, 2002 Report Posted August 16, 2002 That's why Brock is put in the feud with the Rock, to get people to care about him. That's why they will continue to build Brock up even after he (if he does...) wins the title. The Wwf marketing machine, no matter how much I hate them, can make anyone (hell, they made CHYNA a sex symbol...) a big name. Wanting quick results was one of the biggest criticisms of the Wwf in the past year.
Guest Austin3164life Posted August 16, 2002 Report Posted August 16, 2002 What the WWE is a good payoff for a good storyline. They are lacking in both departments and inconsistency has been the norm this past 7 months. The WWE either starts off a nice storyline, only to ruin it with a bad segment/match, or they have the shittiest storyline capped off with an entertaining match. There's no room for lagging, and no in-between for lack of effort. Creative Team really needs to fill in the loose ends.
