Guest Austin3164life Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Lately, for the past four-five years or so, as an avid wrestling fan, I've been catching notice of something rather peculiar. Any other fan would dismiss the subject that I am speaking about, yet it has bothered me. Call it one of those itches you can't reach to scratch. Since the WWE has entered the "Attitude" era, more matches have become impromptu matches, basically they are made either the same day as the show or the same minute. This is alarming because there's no backround, especially if the two opponents do not have a history together. For example, Kurt Angle vs. Mysterio Jr. Hey, it sounds hip and pretty wild to put two symetrically different wrestlers in a match, yet I fail to see the actual reason why Mysterio and Angle have become foes. I think impromptu matches are a hidden, yet significant reason as to why storylines are not thick enough and do not have depth, therefore matches are so overbooked to compensate for the lack of coherent plots in the storylines. I like it when there is a Raw card up a day, two days, even a week before the show. That way, the wrestlers have time to build up some hostility between the two. It sounds cool when you "don't know what will happen on Raw, because anything can happen" yet the WWE usually fills the void with overbooked crap matches. I think that if the WWE actually announced more matches beforehand (and they should make matches that would make a little bit of sense), the fans would have something to look forward to, instead of guessing to the point of annoyance when a fan starts not to care, since matches are terribly overbooked. What do you guys think?
Guest GameCop Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Feuds are not what they used to be...
Guest TestKick Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 WWE plans most matches the day of the show. It's just another case of the shitty writing.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I loved ECW ppvs when you were promised 4 or 5 matches...then get a few impromptu ones coming out of nowhere...made the shows a lot more fun.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I think the worst impromptu matches are the ones they used to put on in 98-99. Like Edge/Owen Hart. Where the show would come on and it'd be billed as a special "bonus match"
Guest The Czech Republic Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I think WrestleMania should always have the best buildup. Everything should be set in stone 2 weeks before the show. I would plan like follows: Royal Rumble, No Way Out 3 weeks after that, Wrestlemania 8 weeks after.
Guest Austin3164life Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Impromptu matches suck because there's no buildup and there's nothing to look forward to on the show. I like to look forward to something. Best example is when Bischoff announced Triple H vs. The Rock from last week for Raw two nights ago. It got me anticipated to see who would go over, what can Triple H really do, has The Rock reached "I carry the rest" status. Things like that can really attract viewers.
Guest jester Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I don't mind occasional impromptu matches, but sometimes they really overdo it. On some nights on Raw, it seems like every damn match stems from some sudden argument two wrestlers have. One night I expect Bischoff or Stephanie to come down to the ring and say "Uh, everyone is getting along tonight, so we have no scheduled matches. Sorry, go home." In theory, this is a sport right? A sport where wrestlers are competing to win belts. Do the Yankees/Tigers need a reason to have a baseball game? Not beyond that one is scheduled. Sometimes that's enough in wrestling too.
Guest Olympic Slam Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I don't mind prgrams like Rey vs Angle or RVD vs Benoit. Not every program or match has to have a bloody feud full of mind games and deception. If that were the case the writers would run out of ideas by like tommorow. Plus it would diminsih the impact of a true feud like McMahon vs Austin, Angle vs. Austin, HHH vs Foley or something smaller like Hogan vs. Rock. Save the special stuff for special feuds. Seriously, does anyone want an overbooked backstory getting into the cruiser division or into Angle vs. Rey? The match itself should be entertaining enough
Guest Austin3164life Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Hey, I didn't say that the match will stink up Summerslam, but the WWE has to overbook their match to make up for the little background they have going into this. It seems like "yeah, good match, but why? what's the point?".
Guest Kid Kablam Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Actually I thought that the buildup for Angle vs Mysterio has been satisfying. I'm pretty psyched for this match. But I do agree, sometimes it seems like they have two "planned" (kayfabe) matches and everything else branches from arguments that same nighjt.
Guest Brian Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Obviously Rey has to prove himself and Angle's out to lay in a beating
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I haven't watched Smackdown since Stephanie Mcmahon came back so the lack of buildup for a Rey Mysterio/Kurt Angle feud wouldn't effect me that much. It kind of irritates me that they have to have a little half assed feud that conveniently started earlier on in the day to schedule matches. Why can't they just wrestle because that's what the hell wrestlers do? If they want to book matches the day of the show, that's fine but I every match doesn't have to happen because the wrestlers have animosity towards each other and want to settle it in the ring. Wrestlers must be a hostile bunch of people.
