Guest Angle-plex Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 As far I'm concerned, the character "The Rock" died at Wrestlemania X-7. Back then, he was an arrogent, loud mouth, entertaining character. He was one of the best in the business, and carried the WWE in 2000 along with Triple H. However, when Dwayne Johnson came back after Wrestlemania X-7, he was no longer The Rock. He was not the arrogent, rich, entertaining character he was before. He was Dwayne Johnson. He no longer wears $500 shirts, He no longer wears $15000 rolexes. Instead, he wears windpants and Nike sneakers. He's no longer arrogent. He was up for a shot at the undisputed title, which he gave to Hogan. That's not something the old Rock would do. Actually, that's the exact opposite of what the old Rock would do. Hell, just tonight, Edge interupted Dwayne a few times, and all The Rock did was just smile and talk about his testicles. I'm a fan of The Rock's $15000 dollar watches, not of his Nike Sneakers. I'm a fan of The Rock's funny, entertaining jokes, not his constant, boring sex jokes. I'm a fan of The Rock, not a fan of Dwayne Johnson.
Guest Dangerous A Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I, too am not a fan of the "new" Rock. Since he's come back the second time, his promos are fucking corny. His in ring hasn't dropped off, but his promos and backstage skits have dropped off dramatically.
Guest Texas Small Arms 09 Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Angle Plex you are right. It's almost like he lost that when he lost to Austin at Wrestlemania X7. Sure he still has his Pavlov control, but he just isn't as entertaining as he once was. Hlel Rock as a heel was the best.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Notice that on RAW he didn't even introduce himself as The Rock, he actually introduced himself by his real name Dwayne Johnson (!). I won't even get into that stupid leg humping thing... but at least when I didn't like The Rock before he could still occasionally laugh. Now I just groan, get pissed at him rarely putting anyone over, and change the channel.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Yeah, I do miss him dressing well. It added another level to him, that of a guy who could kick your ass, but won't because he doesn't want to sweat on his clothes. Even face Rock didn't like people interrupting him, but that was pre-Wrestlemania XVII. He also had the sex jokes, but they weren't nearly as often as now. He's still the most entertaining guy there, but if he was how he used to be, he'd be amazing. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Incandenza Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Now I just groan, get pissed at him rarely putting anyone over, and change the channel. I'm not a fan of Hollywood Dwayne Johnson, either--though his ring work hasn't slacked, surprisingly--but what in the world are you talking about when you say that? The guy's jobbed cleanly more times this year than than Austin or Taker, or, of course, Triple H.

His in ring hasn't dropped off, but his promos and backstage skits have dropped off dramatically. Yeah but the problem is that his in-ring is not exactly stellar. The Rock is the walking icon of "3moves + a catchphrase= Gold". His "sharpshooter" is particularly galling. Bring back the Rock or let Duane go make flicks.
Guest papacita Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I dunno. Rock isn't as funny/entertaining as he used to be, but I think that's because he goes out of his way to try and make people laugh. I actually like the fact that he's added more of his personality into his promos, because in 2000 when he would cut his serious, and even some funny promos against guys like Benoit and HHH, he sounded like a damn robot. Now his promos have a bit more energy and life that they didn't have over a year ago. I do like late-98 and early/mid-99 Rock much better, though.

"Rock gets hit by a 155mm howitzer, but bah God he's a Hoss and Brahma Bull tough...."
Guest evenflowDDT Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Now I just groan, get pissed at him rarely putting anyone over, and change the channel. The guy's jobbed cleanly more times this year than than Austin or Taker, or, of course, Triple H. I'm referring more to this specific run as champion, where he hasn't defended the title once, didn't even appear on TV one week (did he ever explain that?), and only jobbed once, to Chris Benoit, but even then still taking longer to tap out from the CrossFace than anyone ever. You're right, for being one of the top tier guys, when he doesn't have the title, usually I'm just talking out of my ass from my own dislike of him, but when he has the title, even when he jobs he rarely puts over opponents in the ring, where he kicks out of finishers and a zillion chairshots. The best example of this was Wrestlemania X-7, although that's also admittedly the most extreme example. My main problem with The Rock is through all the years, he built himself up as the best guy in the WWF/E. Now since a lot of that's his own hard work, more power to him. However, it's become clear that it's impossible to beat The Rock in a totally fair contest because of him having wins over everyone in the company's top tier. So, what do they do, but always give him the title... which basically eliminates anyone else from fair competition.
Guest LJSexay Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 thie whole thing with the 'new' rock... It's called character development believe it or not, and if he has still the same rock he was 2 - 3 years ago, smarks would scream OFF WITH HIS HEAD LOLZ~~!@!, due to being stale. Moreso than he is now, that is. Not that ythe new rock is better or anything, but this is why the rock isn't what he used to be.
Guest Austin3164life Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I think we've all come to one base conclusion. The Rock's face character has become stale, period.
Guest griffinmills Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Might as well bookmark this link under "The day everyone was not entertained enough by the Rock for one day and decided to hate him." Mark it down.
Guest Dames Edna Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Its funny, since his act has become more based around being a strong worker, I've enjoyed him more. His backstage stuff never really did much for me, so I could care less about this supposed change
Guest Angle-plex Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Might as well bookmark this link under "The day everyone was not entertained enough by the Rock for one day and decided to hate him." Mark it down. What are you talking about? I said I didn't like him since he came back after Wrestlemania X-7. It had nothing to do with today.
Guest candie45 Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Angle-Plex is absolutley right. The OLD Rock would have said "No no no, THIS is how you say it." when Edge said his catchphrase. He would then proceed to tell him never to steal one of his phrases again. This Rock just laughed like he was joking around with the guys backstage. The people loved when he was the arrogant great one. They loved his fancy clothes, and his "Rock" voice. He's supposed to be a symbolism of royalty in the WWE, which you can equate from his music. He isn't supposed to be a generous equivalent to the fans. And I think that's the spark that he lost.
Guest The Electrifyer Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I wish they could turn him heel, this stuff is getting stale. I miss that stuff where in a match, he and his opponent would be brawling by the announce table, then The Rock would take one of the announcer's headset and cut a promo during the match. I want to see that version of The Rock back.

Yea, and I've never really liked him, but lately he's been worse than ever.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 It really doesnt matter since hes going away again in a few days anyway, now does it?
Guest DerangedHermit Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Meh....the old Rock was better (the 1998 Nation stuff). The Rock, when he comes back in a few months, will give everybody a Rolex, but he'll only give Faarooq an autographed picture of himself.....
Guest cabbageboy Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I think it all comes down to this: the guy jobs to anyone. Take a look at his feuds with Austin and HHH....Austin beat him every time and HHH beat him quite often. It's very hard to take the Rock seriously when he loses all the time. As nice as it was to see him submit against Benoit, is this really the smartest thing to do before a major PPV? See, Rocky always counted on his promos and skits to stay over despite his habitual jobbing. Now that his promos are getting lethargic he has problems.
Guest Bricks Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Old Rock would've stared down Edge and go "Don't you ever say The Rock's catchphrases again". Now he's catching his own testicle in his mouth and spitting it. WHAT HAPPENED?!
Guest Kid Kablam Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 thie whole thing with the 'new' rock... Character developement is his stint with Mankind and the Rock and Sock Connection. That's not character developement. He's a parody of his former self, much like Vince became an over the top version of himself. That is not character developement, it's stripping a character of everything interesting, and reducing them to a shell of there former self with as was put absolutely perfectly he relies on pavlovian response.
Guest Kid Kablam Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 Kudos to Texas small arms for the perfect refrence
Guest Olympic Slam Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 The old Rock character was a jerk to EVERYONE, now he's buddies with all the faces. His insults towards the heels now consist of "you look like a hilarious movie star/television character." I guess I kind of miss the old "robo Rock" who quoted the same three things every single night (sometimes twice a night.)
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I miss the old Rock. I hate the Showboat in his place. At least the Rock used to put on good matches while trash talking his way through (and had me rolling in the aisles all the way). However, nowadays.... It's like, when he drops something like drop the elbow, the crowd is not as popping for the elbow as much as they are the little shimmy he makes before dropping it. It's all about his spazzing out and "FINALLY" and "SMELALALALALALALAL" I could deal with those catchphrases back when he was cocky and told the crowd to shut up and stop "playing sing-along with The Rock." The Great One has become The Lame One since X-7. After the WM vs WM thread, I put in the X-7 disc and genuinely chuckled at "Steve Austin, you're bald double-stunnin' monkey ASS belongs to The Rock!" Personally, I think the poontang bit set off this chain of events.
Guest NazMistry Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 If anyone should have made that Triple H promo about fans making him weak it should have been The Rock.
Guest Angle-plex Posted August 23, 2002 Report Posted August 23, 2002 I hate faces... I don't care if he's heel or not. I just want to see The Rock, not Dwayne Johnson.
