Nowinski to have surgery to remove tumor

LOS ANGELES – Sept. 22, 2002 – Christopher Nowinski will have surgery Tuesday in Boston to remove a marble-sized benign tumor on his left jaw.

 

World Wrestling Entertainment’s only Harvard alumnus has had the tumor since he was a teenager, but it has only recently became visible, having quadrupled in size over the last six months. It’s causing a throbbing pain in that part of his face.

 

Although he may be able to appear on RAW in backstage vignettes and the like, he’ll be unable to wrestle for four to six weeks.

 

“It sucks, but what are you going to do?” Nowinski said. “I’ve got to take care of business before I turn into a freak.”

 

It’s the sixth surgery that Nowinski has undergone; he has previously had two procedures on his shoulder and one each on his foot, hand and tonsils. This is the first surgery, however, that he’s had on his birthday. Nowinski will turn 24 on Tuesday.

 

Since the tumor is located on one of his facial nerves, the surgery is much more complicated than it would otherwise be. His doctor will have to cut all the way from the top of his left ear to the back of his neck.

 

But Nowinski said there’ll be no noticeable scarring because the operation will be performed by a world-class plastic surgeon. Coincidentally, the surgeon, Dr. Michael Yaremchek, is a graduate of Harvard Medical School.

 

“He’ll be able to make it so there’s no dent in my face,” Nowinski said. “We work out at the same gym, so I know him pretty well.”
