Guest djsunyc Posted November 14, 2002 Report Posted November 14, 2002 what if we treated wrestling like a real sports season. let's say we use a standings system just like baseball or football. you split up the wrestlers into 4 divisions - heavyweight, IC, tag team, and cruiser. you can do it for each show if you want to keep the brand extension intact. put about 8 wresters/teams in each division and have each match result in a W/L/T or even use a point system where a pinfall win is 2 points and a double DQ or countout is 1 point. an example below: HW Division NAME (W-L-T-PTS) ----------------------- HHH (5-1-1-11) (champion) Y2J (5-2-0-10) RVD (4-2-1-9) BOOKER T (4-3-0-8) etc. - every match means something - they will also use house show results in the standings making them meaningful - it's so simple, where everyone wants to win so they can move up in the standings. the storyline speaks for itself. they can add all the "soap opera" stuff to a fued as a side story but not the main one itself. this keeps the belt strong. - 2nd and 3rd place can fight a #1 contender's match for a title shot at the PPV. imagine RVD constantly winning on RAW keeping him in 2nd place but loses at the PPV's. he could headline a PPV 2 or 3 months in a row and if he doesn't win, he can be labeled a "choker" like the buffalo bills. this allows more character development. - let's say CHRISTIAN is in the IC division. and he stays IC champ for 4 months or so, he automatically gets bumped up to the heavyweight division and someone gets bumped down to the IC division. - this allows for different matches every week on RAW leading up to a PPV there's so many more rules and stuff but i think something like this could work. the wwe always uses the company line of wins and losses don't matter but you know what, they do. in very rare cases, i.e. rock, austin, where their charisma is larger than wrestling itself, a losing streak does nothing for a wrestler (i.e. chris jericho). there was a time Y2J lost every match leading up to this title win. that devalues him. if he won every match like austin did for his first title win, then it makes him that much stronger. just an idea which i'm sure many of you have thought of before...
Guest chirs3 Posted November 14, 2002 Report Posted November 14, 2002 There was a suggestion a while back for seasons, and while it's a novel idea, it shouldn't be used longterm. I wouldn't mind this happening once, over a span of two or three months (say, for a vacated title)...
Guest notJames Posted November 14, 2002 Report Posted November 14, 2002 That would require the WW_ putting stock in the intelligence of the wrestling fan. They barely stick to their own continuity, since the attention span of the average mark is roughly a month and a half (re: Kane's 17 different origins). They hardly ever mention brackets whenever they do tournaments, until it comes down to the final four or eight. In fact, they probably count on wrestling fans not following the continuity so that they can throw shit in and out of the storylines at a moment's notice. There's no way the average fan is going to buy into a system like that. I doubt even some hardcore fans would want to either. You can't treat pro wrestling like a real sport because it isn't one.
