The swelling put pressure on his esophagus and trachea, which made breathing difficult. The Game is expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon. wwe.com

Good to hear the larynx isn't crushed, HHH is a lucky bastard as it could have been much worse. I'm sure the injury was never really RVD's fault. He's sloppy, but not to the point where he would land a knee on someone else's throat (although he has put himself in serious danger before. The table match vs the Dudleyz last year when he five-starred himself face first through a table springs directly to mind).
