Ross Report -- Dec. 13, 2002

Greetings from under the black 200X Resistol hat from a very proud and happy Oklahoma Sooners fan after watching OU defeat Colorado for the Big XII Championship Saturday night in Houston. Now I'm preparing to head down to the Sunshine State of Florida for this Sunday's Armageddon and two days of TV from, hopefully, the sunny skies in Orlando and Tampa.

I have a very positive feeling (no wisecracks from the cynical minority out there) about this Sunday's show from Ft. Lauderdale, which is a combined effort of the RAW and SmackDown! rosters. Seems as if over the last two weeks we have built noticeable momentum on our TV broadcasts for Sunday's event on pay-per-view, especially with a nice focus on the respective main events. I am looking forward to both the Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H two-out-of-three-falls match with the three different stipulations for the World Heavyweight Title, as well as the contest between the Big Show and Kurt Angle for the WWE Title. Both will be very different presentations, I have to believe, and have had solid buildups leading into Armageddon.

Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero could steal the show, and the four-team elimination Tag Team Title Match, not unlike any other multiple team presentation, has the chance to be very good or very average. I look for this RAW contribution to be closer to very good than anything else because of the talent involved in the match and the story behind the teams, as well.

The women's Triple Threat Title bout has the chance to be very entertaining, as the ladies seem to have been building some nice momentum over the past several weeks, highlighted by Victoria's exposure on RAW. There will be no other match on this event where the participants will put out more effort than the three ladies in this one. RAW has done an excellent job building the anticipation for this presentation in my opinion.

Edge versus A-Train (formerly known as Albert) is a great opportunity for both talents, who have definitely been on different paths until recently. This could be one of the "dark horse" matches of the pay-per-view.

I know a great deal of effort is being put forth from many folks within WWE preparing for Sunday's pay-per-view, and we intend to make our last pay-per-view effort of the year the very best broadcast possible. I hope you check it out.

Good seeing Hollywood Hulk Hogan in Atlanta Tuesday afternoon prior to his book signing there. Hogan was backstage only for a few minutes before leaving to do a book signing in Atlanta. Contrary to what was reported elsewhere on the Internet, Hogan did not have a meeting with WWE officials, but did visit and say hello with many folks for the short time he was at the Philips Arena. Hogan's book is continuing to do well in stores, and his book signings have been very successful, with the WWE icon staying and signing every autograph, which is the classy thing to do.

Not sure of the motivation of some individuals who "leak" erroneous information to the wrestling media, especially as it relates to the contract status of certain talents. I read this week where we are looking to make some roster cuts with names mentioned. What purpose does it serve discussing this type of information to anyone outside WWE? I feel very badly for the talents whose names appeared in error because of "sources say." We are constantly evaluating our roster with the goal to always maximize it and make it the best we possibly can, so making roster cuts is not the news some perceive it to be. I can certainly understand when we get taken to task for a broadcast that is perceived to be not great, or virtually anything else we do for public consumption, because our fans certainly have a right to express themselves. But these contractual matters, I feel, should be off limits, because they more often than not are wrong and it upsets wrestlers and their families for no reason. Anyone "leaking" this sort of info has major issues to deal with, it would seem to me.

Rey Mysterio is healing well from getting his knee 'scoped recently by Dr. Jim Andrews and is scheduled to be able to return to the ring in early- to mid-January. Rey has been a super addition to our roster, and we look for more great things from this amazing performer in 2003.

Victoria got her "bell rung" on RAW but is good to go as I write this report. This is one tough cookie who is making the most of her well-deserved opportunity in WWE. Lord knows she has paid her dues in our developmental program since moving from California.

It is expected that Rhyno will be given a full release from his neck surgery around Jan. 7, and he will continue to spend time in OVW knocking off the ring rust and working on his conditioning until he is called back to TV. I am not sure which roster Rhyno will be a part of, but whoever gets him will be better for it.

Tajiri is not quite 100 percent from a severe ankle sprain but will be available for in-ring work if needed.

Edge has been unbooked from live events the last two weekends to allow his injured knee to improve. The rest and therapy have helped, and he will be close to 100 percent come Armageddon.

I saw injured Mark Jindrak this past week at TV, and even though the youngster is on crutches, he remains positive. Mark will be back to 100 percent in a few months from his ankle ligament injury. Before he was injured, Jindrak was making great strides, and we hope he picks up where he left off when he returns.

Eric Angle is experiencing more injury issues. This time it is his shoulder, which probably will need to be 'scoped in the next week or so

Nick Dinsmore, an Ohio Valley Wrestling competitor, should be able to return to the ring in early January, on schedule from his knee surgery.

We have several talents on the injured list, much to everyone's dismay, and we look forward, as they do, to them being healthy and ready to contribute once again to the product. I think the worst feeling a wrestler can have is to be physically unable to perform, but the good news is that we will be getting back some terrific talents over the next couple of months.

Scott Steiner will be wrestling on the SmackDown! event in Jacksonville, Fla., this Saturday night, even though he apparently declared for RAW on Thursday's SmackDown! Scott had already been scheduled for Jacksonville and will keep his obligation to those who purchase tickets to see him compete.

Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin have had some impressive outings in recent WWE events, and I look for these two young blue-chip prospects to contribute a great deal to the product sooner than later. These are two quality athletes with college degrees -- Charlie from Seton Hall and Shelton from Minnesota. I hope we can continue to attract this type of athlete in the future.

I am beginning to really enjoy the dynamic between Victoria and Steven Richards. Something tells me this pair has an excellent chance to get more than a cup of coffee's worth of exposure on RAW.

William Regal and Lance Storm seem to be as effective as any tag team in WWE when it comes down to their in-ring work. These two would probably be very well served to be able to be heard more often, and I am sure that will be the case in the next few weeks.

Nice few weeks of TV for veteran Bill DeMott on SmackDown!

I don't think I would trade Los Guerreros for any tag team in the world right now.

The possibility of Brock Lesnar being in Kurt Angle's corner this Sunday at Armageddon in the WWE Title match is intriguing. Considering their backgrounds, I'm not sure anyone in the business could handle Kurt and Brock if they ever became affiliated. One thing is for sure, someday it is inevitable that these two will go at it, and I want to be there to see it!

John Cena and his "dawg," B-2, are doing very well on SmackDown!, from where I sit. Cena's rapping ability is very marketable, and both men are in great physical condition and ready to step up.

Something tells me that the combination of Christopher Nowinski and D'Lo Brown has the chance to be a very solid team in a short period of time. Vignettes with these two "college men" could be very entertaining.

No word on when the Undertaker will be returning to the ring, but I can't see having the Royal Rumble on Jan. 19 in Boston without him. But, of course, that's my opinion and I could be wrong.

I am very pleased that Albert has undergone a name change to A-Train.

Nice seeing Mr. Jim Barnett down in Atlanta on Tuesday. Jim, a longtime wrestling promoter and executive, is one of the most interesting characters I have ever been associated with in the business, and I would love to read his biography if it were ever published. Other than his failing eyesight, Mr. Barnett is feeling great.

Our developmental group in Louisville, OVW, continues to do a great job for WWE. We stress fundamental skills and philosophies there, and we have several top prospects learning the ropes, so to speak. We are stressing in the coaching there that the talents slow down their presentations somewhat and utilize more wrestling holds -- essentially, getting back to the basics and developing better fundamental skills, which is rapidly becoming a lost art. Tom Prichard, Rip Rogers and Rocky Johnson will be working with these young prospects again after the first of the year. The injured Big Boss Man will rejoin them at some point. Our road agents also travel to OVW on a regular basis to work with talent. I am very proud of the job our folks do in the developmental area but, as always, there is plenty of room for improvement. I think 2003 will be a great year for many of developmental talents to be called up to WWE and provided with the opportunity many of them have been working toward for a long time. To check out what's going on in OVW and their upcoming tryout/training camp in February, log on to OVWrestling.com. Jim Cornette and Danny Davis continue to do great things for WWE, and their weekly TV program is fun to watch.

The RAW 10th anniversary television special on Tuesday, Jan. 14 on the new TNN is going to be huge! The list of talents, old and new, who have and are a part of RAW is immense and impressive. It will be interesting to see who accepts WWE's invitation to be a part of this live TV event. Green-room conversations could be priceless.

Sorry to hear about the deaths of Tim "Mr. Wrestling" Woods and George "The Baby Blimp" "Two Ton" Harris recently in Charlotte, N.C. Woods was a great amateur and a top hand for years in our business and was very well respected throughout the industry. Harris worked for Jim Crockett Promotions for years after being a solid antagonist in many territories for several years.

I am making plans to spend New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif., to see the Sooners take on the Washington State Cougars in the granddaddy of all bowl games, the Rose Bowl. Can't wait to actually see a game in the famed Rose Bowl, especially considering it will be OU's first-ever trip to this particular bowl. There is nothing like spending New Year's Eve with the rowdy Oklahoma football fans, who will invade California for a few days in late December/early January. It was really a thrill for me to be on the sideline at the Big XII title game and to be invited into the Sooners' locker room after their championship victory in Houston Saturday night. The entire football team has really treated me great this season, and I sincerely appreciate being a part of the Sooner football family.

I think you are going to enjoy the photos we are in the process of selecting for our upcoming cookbook. Longtime fans will especially enjoy some of the vintage shots we have selected.

It is always great to be in Florida this time of the year, and I think Armageddon Sunday is going to be a pleasant surprise for all of us and deliver more than expected. As I said earlier, I just have a gut feeling (no jokes, please) that this is going to end up being one helluva pay-per-view. Proof is in the pudding, as Granny used to say, so we will see if my premonition is accurate come Sunday night at 8 ET/5 PT. Take care and I hope to see you back here next week.

Yeah, as in "Dark Horse" that gets taken to the glue factory.

Of course, he's sitting in front of a TV with a blindfold and earplugs.

I haven't seen Raw lately, but when did they get involved in an angle? I thought D-Lo was a permanent resident of Heat.

Nowinski convinced D'Lo that Maven was trying to take his "spot", so Mr. Brown turned heel to tag with Chris Harvard against Maven and Al Snow on RAW. D'Lo pinned Al with the Sky High.

BTW, Al Snow trained all three men.

Actually, you're wrong.

Royal Rumble is the ONLY time UT is useful because he kills the dead weight. Kills them DEAD.

I thought his point about people revealing possible cuts was good. In the real world (outside wrestling) talking about someone potentially losing their job outside your manager is going to get you fired. I can't imagine calling someone so they could print it.

The cynical "minority" is pretty big I think.

I agree with the dark horse statement above - take er out to the barn and shoot her.

And the point that RVD is not mentioned is a good one. So much for HHH not blaming him for the injury...RVD's in china he's been buried so far down.

Warning: Extremely cynical fan alert

**I have a very positive feeling (no wisecracks from the cynical minority out there)***

People who complain about WWE are a tiny, insiginificant minority. But for some reason we feel compelled to mention this "cynical minority" in every report.

***Edge versus A-Train (formerly known as Albert) is a great opportunity for both talents, who have definitely been on different paths until recently. This could be one of the "dark horse" matches of the pay-per-view.***

For Albert, maybe. Edge has to be wondering what he did to piss someone off. Did he get a haircut request too?

***I know a great deal of effort is being put forth from many folks within WWE preparing for Sunday's pay-per-view, and we intend to make our last pay-per-view effort of the year the very best broadcast possible. I hope you check it out. ***

All out begging is apparently next, eh JR?

***Good seeing Hollywood Hulk Hogan in Atlanta Tuesday afternoon prior to his book signing there. Hogan was backstage only for a few minutes before leaving to do a book signing in Atlanta. Contrary to what was reported elsewhere on the Internet, Hogan did not have a meeting with WWE officials***

The way to kill Internet rumors dead is to ignore them. To enforce them, just keep denying them.

***Not sure of the motivation of some individuals who "leak" erroneous information to the wrestling media, especially as it relates to the contract status of certain talents. I read this week where we are looking to make some roster cuts with names mentioned. What purpose does it serve discussing this type of information to anyone outside WWE?***

God damn it you prick, now I have to spend half the Ross report mocking the Internet and deny the the leaked information.

***I feel very badly for the talents whose names appeared in error because of "sources say."***

And we're going to keep them on just to spite you Internet turds. So there.

***Victoria got her "bell rung" on RAW but is good to go as I write this report. This is one tough cookie who is making the most of her well-deserved opportunity in WWE. Lord knows she has paid her dues in our developmental program since moving from California. ***

Not enough dues were paid to avoid jobbing to Jackie though, apparently.

***Tajiri is not quite 100 percent from a severe ankle sprain but will be available for in-ring work if needed.***

More like "available for jobbing to the hosses if necessary"

***Cena's rapping ability is very marketable, and both men are in great physical condition and ready to step up. ***

Apparently that Black Resitol Hat is too tight and cutting off the flow of blood to JR's hat.

***No word on when the Undertaker will be returning to the ring, but I can't see having the Royal Rumble on Jan. 19 in Boston without him. But, of course, that's my opinion and I could be wrong.***

Eeeh, could be...

***I am very pleased that Albert has undergone a name change to A-Train.***

Yes, and now he's as good as Kurt Angle. All he needed was a name change.

***We are stressing in the coaching there that the talents slow down their presentations somewhat and utilize more wrestling holds -- essentially, getting back to the basics and developing better fundamental skills, which is rapidly becoming a lost art. ***

Now whose fault would that be?

Why in the hell does JR try to play to smarks and hoss-lovers at the same time?

He damn well better give the Guerreros their props, as well as state the obvious (Eddy and Benoit will steal the show).

However, at least he just said he's glad about the Albert name change, instead of dedicating a whole paragraph to shilling him. Shocked he didn't do so.

While it's good to see the impression, that Moore, Raven, etc aren't getting cut, where does Ross dole out this idea that discussing contracts is unethical?

Remind me again: Which website was the first to parade on it's frontpage that Scott Steiner had been signed, before they could even mention him on live TV? Oh, that's right, WWE.com. How quickly we forget.

I thought his point about people revealing possible cuts was good. In the real world (outside wrestling) talking about someone potentially losing their job outside your manager is going to get you fired. I can't imagine calling someone so they could print it.

And what exactly is wrong with leaking this info?

There's nothing unethical about it at all. The only thing it can accomplish is a wave of support for those about to be cut. For instance, if people here Raven is going to be cut, any fans of his will complain and there's a chance that these complaints will sway those in power not to cut him.

The discomfort the family members feel is meaningless, because they'd feel a lot more discomfort if the guy was actually cut.

Just look at it this way: If people suspsected a popular co-worker was about to get fired, people might start spreading rumors about this. Then more and more people might take an interest and tell the manager that he's an excellent employee and that he shouldn't be fired; or, they might go over the manager's head and tell his boss that the manager is acting improperly and should not be firing this valuable employee.

If there is no forewarning of the firing, then people might complain after their friend has been fired, but the friend is still fired, so it doesn't help him at all.

And of course if WWE doesn't cut Raven et. al. just because they want to spite the people who expected it, then that's even better.

I have always wondered what happened to Stevie Richards. Anyone who watched ECW in 1995-1997 probably agrees with me. I used to find him entertaining and thought he was a pretty good worker, he used to do a hell of a great power bomb. In fact at one time many people called him the next HBK. Now I find him boring not just in the ring but his overall personality.
