Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 First of all let me just say that let's not talk about steroids at all in this thread. Ok on with it...... I was wondering after reading Sex Lies and Headlocks and thinking of everything that I've heard and read over the years, are drugs an unavoidable part of wrestling? I mean it seems that nearly every wrestler has had trouble with painkillers and other drugs. I often wonder if it's just a part of wrestling. I mean think of everything they go through. Not only do their bodies go through intense punishment and pain but being on the road they have to deal with lack of sleep and depression. Is it just a part of wrestling to take drugs to pass this time and to make yourself feel better and to ease the pain? Or is it something that the weak do? Those that just can't hack it need the drugs? What do you think?
Guest godthedog Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 almost unavoidable, i think. i can't imagine going through all that wear & tear on the road and not taking something for the pain. the fact that foley never really got into it proves that nobody REALLY has to start popping pills, but it seems that only the very strong-willed come out of it unscathed.
Guest Mole Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Well, they are unavoidable, just look at Mick Foley. He never did any drugs, ever. He took painkillers once in a blue moon, only when he was in major pain. I heard Lance Storm is clean too. The wrestling business is like the rock n roll business. It is hard living on the road, tough hours, and working your ass off. Hell, I'd be doing painkillers too if I took that much pushiment. No coke or anything, I'd probably drink a lot or smoke pot, like I do now.
Guest bob_barron Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 I think so- I think every wrestler has to take a pain pill.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Well I mean does everyone have to abuse them? It seems everyone abuses them.
Guest bob_barron Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Well the people who abuse them are the ones who get noticed. I mean there's the Bulldogs, Eddys and Regal that do sadly abuse them but I'm sure there are many other wrestlers who do take pain pills and are just fine
Guest Downhome Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Drugs (I'm talking legal drugs here) are not unavoidable, but misusing them are. I assure you that every wrestler who has been in the business for ANY lenght of time has taken something. Hell, I'M taking something right now. The key is to not misuse them, and that is very possible, many do it right now.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Aren't most painkillers addictive though. I mean I've only had to take darvocet for my wisdom teeth being pulled and that wasn't so bad. But then again it wasn't very strong.
Guest Ram Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Not really. More like habit forming than anything. You feel pain, you take a pain pill. You don't have to, but it just seems like an easy thing to do to get rid of something.

Hell, I am basically addicted to them now. I mean, I can control it though. Well that is what everyone says, and they get even more addicted.
Guest Choken One Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Painkillers are indeed adictive. My father constantly took Pain pills as A driver and could be classified as a Addict.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 I wonder if a good christian like Chris Jericho takes Painkillers?
Guest humongous2002 Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 To still wrestle at a high level like an Eddy G. or a Dynamite Kid a wrestler has to definitely take pain killers , unless you are Superman or a masochist like Mick Foley.
Guest HartFan86 Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Anyone in any sport takes drugs. Don't tell me your football and hockey players out there aren't addicted on pain killers
Guest Choken One Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 I wonder if a good christian like Chris Jericho takes Painkillers? My father is pretty hard christian but he took them relentlessly.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Yes I'm not really talking about taking the drugs guys. I'm talking about is it unavoidable to abuse them? It seems like everyone in the business ends up abusing them.
Guest Mole Posted December 31, 2002 Report Posted December 31, 2002 Once again, Mick Foley never abused them.
Guest godthedog Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 i honestly don't see how eddie can bump like he does and NOT be on painkillers. i'm guessing that he just hasn't let it get to the point that it affects his work now.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 Yeah I know Foley didn't. But he almost. Remember in Foley is Good he said that he started to get addicted when his wife stopped him.
Guest Mole Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 I thought he said he stopped himself, because he knew he was going to get addicted.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 I wonder if a good christian like Chris Jericho takes Painkillers? Probably. Unless he's a Christian Scientist (which means he shuns most medicine and trusts God will deal with it), but that's not a good idea really. That's how Jim Henson died. He had a bad cough, but decided to tough it out and figured Jeebus would get him through all right. He waited until he was nearly having difficulty breating to be rushed to the hospital, and he died shortly after. The sad thing is, he died of an illness that's easily treatable with medicine, if he actually went to the Doctor and took the pills before it got that bad.

Guest Kotzenjunge Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 And Ram wins the "first post of 2003" prize. You get, errr... um... a cookie?
Guest Brian Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 Jerry Lawler prided himself on never touching drugs or alcohol. And because Eddy's on such thin ice, I doubt he'd touch anything nor would Benoit, Chavo, or really the rest of the locker room put him in that position.
Guest Ram Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 And Ram wins the "first post of 2003" prize. You get, errr... um... a cookie? Funny thing is is that I don't even remember posting that. Of course, I *don't* know what I'm talking about....but still.

And because Eddy's on such thin ice, I doubt he'd touch anything nor would Benoit, Chavo, or really the rest of the locker room put him in that position. 80s wrestling in memphis and current wwf wrestling are 2 completely different animals. the matches now are higher-impact, with almost no rest holds allowed, & generally more demanding, with guys literally taking crazy bumps like going through tables on a weekly basis. and since it was the physical pain that got eddie on the drugs in the first place, one would think that he'd tone down the physicality in his style to make him need the drugs less. but he hasn't toned his style down at all. he still bumps around like shawn michaels, landing full force on his back & knees all the time. either eddie's on painkillers, or he hurts a LOT more.
