Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 I saw a commerical for Man on the Moon earlier on Comedy Central and it reminded me of the news that broke during filming, where supposedly Carrey pissed Lawler off because he wouldn't break out of character when he was Kaufman, causing Lawler to really slap him across the face during the filming of the Kaufman/Lawler/Letterman incident scene. I remember Lawler taking some shots at Carrey on RAW during his commentary back in 99/00 What I'm wondering is... was that a work designed to generate interest for the movie? I know that they staged alot of strange incident around the time of the premeir I guess to recreate the spirit of Kaufman... Anyone remember this?
Guest bob_barron Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 It was a work to build interest in Man on the Moon and to pay tribue to Kaufman
Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Yeah that's what I thought... I just remember be confused at the time because it was covered in some national media outlets. I remember hearing about it on CNN
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 With rare exception, the media is stupid and will bite on anything.
Guest bob_barron Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 CNN just recently reported that Lawler-Kaufman was all a work which everyone knew about three years ago
Guest Brian Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Most people knew it was a work when it was going on.
Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 CNN just recently reported that Lawler-Kaufman was all a work which everyone knew about three years ago Yeah they seem to be a little behind the times... it was revealed in the movie in 99 that it was a work, and even before that in Bob Zmudas book (Bob being Andy's writer)
Guest Downhome Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Lawler and Kaufman was a WORK!??????????????????????
Guest The Electrifyer Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 I remember this incident and watching them report it on CNN. I even remember seeing JR with Lawler when he was being interviewed.
Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Lawler and Kaufman was a WORK!?????????????????????? lol yep... I'm shocked myself Actually it was a pretty awesome angle. Anyone know who booked it exactly? I'm assuming Lawler since it took place in Memphis

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Anyone who saw the movie back in what...1999 should have known that it was a work..not to mention several other books that recount the whole thing and how it happened. How exactly is it that Lawler writes a book and mentions it and says it was work, how is that suddenly SHOCKING news. And yeah, the whole Lawler/Carrey thing was probably just publicity for the movie. But I think it was smart that they didn't go as far as to make an angle out of it, since I would have been outraged along with the small community of Andy Kaufman fans.. Hell, I think Andy would have come back just to bop both of em on the head if they tried such a thing.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Well if Lawler wrote the Kaufman stuff Vince needs to put him on the booking commitee
Guest papacita Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 I pretty much figured the Lawler/Carrey thing was a work back when they did it. In Raw magazine a couple of months later, they did this whole article about Carrey being obsessed with Kaufman to the point where he was beginning to transform into him. It all just sounded too fake. Plus the fact that Lawler challenged him to an actual match pretty much gave it away for me.
Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Most people knew it was a work when it was going on. You would probably be surprised at how many people believed that it was real... watch the documentary "My Breakfast with Blassie." It details the entire angle from start to finish (although in Kayfabe of course) and shows interviews with fans... Memphis fans... so I'm sure that explains it lol
Guest dreamer420 Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 Does anyone remember Lawler challenging Carrey to appear on Raw right after it happened? I wonder if that popped the rating for the show at all.
Guest EternallyLazy Posted January 12, 2003 Report Posted January 12, 2003 I remember this. I thought it was kind of funny. It would've been great if Carrey would've shown up on RAW to play out an angle... actually it probably would've sucked, but Carrey would go down as the biggest celebrity to ever appear on a wrestling program
