Tough Enough

Last night I was on a film shoot, and the sound equipment went down. As we were waiting for a replacement, the conversation suddenly turned to tough enough. I was suprised to hear it, because very few film majors embrace wrestling. It wasn't anything too heated, but it made me wonder if tough enough could be a nice access point for casual fans. Also, most of them agreed that Tough Enough helped them to respect wrestling for the first time. I just found this interesting. Thoughts?

It could be a lot better. Meaning:

  • The winners get a WWE Developmental deal for 6 months, and that's it (unless, of course, WWE wants to keep 'em on board for a bit).
  • Instead of a plush mansion, they should have all had to share a studio apartment. Most indy wrestlers have to live in less-than-great conditions, so the trainees should have to as well.
  • While training, the contestants should also have to be shipped to local indy shows to help set up the ring, get tickets, help out the entire crew, etc. so they have a better understanding and appreciation for different aspects of the business.
  • Instead of a pair of super-sporty SUVs, they should have travelled by van or station wagon (cars that indy workers could probably afford).
  • A lesson in blading would be fun too :D
Those are just my personal thoughts on how to improve the show, but I did find the show entertaining, and TE3's two winners, John and Matt, look like they could be really, really good one day.

or they could have no vehicle at all and have to take the bus. But all of those were great ideas.

Agreed 100%, it's like the "Real World". I don't know about you, but I don't consider the "Real World" to be that where everyone lives in mansion's all the time in exotic places like Hawai or the such while haveing sex with everyone all the time, just doesn't make a bit of sense to me, thus my reason for DESPISING shows like that.

These guys in Tough Enough never knows what it's like to TRULY pay your dues, and that's what irks me the most about the show. They really should go with some of your ideas.

Man...I could see the look on those kids faces if one of the trainers said...

"today's lesson will be about blading and doing so as to not lose as much blood as a stuck pig..."

Those preppy bastards would shit themselves...

Or...

"Today's lesson will be about how to take 12 chair shots to the head without passing out, just like Mick Foley!"

...I wouldn't mind seeing that.

As for blading, there's nothing to it.

Heh, they bring in Steve Corino (even though he's not on contract) to teach them the finer points of completely changing your natural hair color with one swipe of a blade...

Or bring in Warrior to teach them how to withstand the onslaught of true confusion and bordom.

Bring RVD in..

I don't see why they can't live in a sick-nice house. It's not like they live in that kind of environment all the time.

And yes, a lesson in blading would've been awesome to watch.

A blading lesson would be awesome, but that's one of the things that still seems pretty unknown about the business. A ton of marks thnk that all blood is hardway.

I wish they'd do follow up shows and so TE winners toiling away in OVW.

I'd love to see Snow tell the kids that today they will learn about blading. Snow would then explain what blading is and pull out a blade he'd might use. The kids would start shifting around and look at each other. After some awkward silence, Snow would proclaim that he's just kidding and send them for some in-ring drills.

Just before lunch, a sinister Al Snow would sit the kids down and blade Bill DeMott. Now, pick a partner and practice with each other!

Hehe!

They should also have to work a lengthy match using all the basics to see if they have their stuff down. Not to mention that blade job or watching them learn how to go through a table would be awesome.

John or Matt have a shot at becoming damn good though.

They should bring Chigusa in just for the show--as well as a few buckets.

But I'll settle for Molly.

deadbeater: Ehhh..she'd be on TV more, but TE trainers are basically guys that WWE says, "Well, we have nothing to really do with you right now..."

Of course, it's better than seeing her once every two weeks or so. *sigh*

I dunno. My mom started watching Tough Enough and then she really got into it and I get her to watch wrestling these days(like the Royal Rumble) so she can see the kids from old Tough Enough's and the Trainers. "Look it's Harvard! Get in the ring!"

Oh yeah, Tough Enough can definitely convert some non-fans into being fans, and people that once had NO respect for wrestling now have some...BUT it could be A LOT better. Like, my examples for improvement could be utilized to show non-fans just how hard it can really be.

All the "marks" that I have ever ran into when blood became the topic of discussion simply thought that the blood was fake.

Other than a couple of things I generally agree with your ideas.

Personally I don't really care where they live. Since they're training so often it's not like they have a whole lot of time to spend in the house. And it looks like most of the TE kids prefer clubbing anyways.

Instead of setting up the ring at indy shows, they should have them set up the ring before every training session. Not just when they head out to South Africa or Iceland, but every freaking day. And when they go to the WWE events, make them help out there too with setting up the set and stuff.

Tough Enough is generally a good idea, the problem comes when MTV tries to throw some "Real World" stuff in there. Personally I like the Real World, but it should have nothing to do with wrestling. Just show the competition, that's enough drama right there.

Yeah I can't stand the episodes where they spend like 2 minutes on wrestling and the rest is about the kids going clubbing and getting drunk and other BS.

Was it just me or was the batch in Tough Enough 3 a little older than every other show?

What great insight.

Anyway...I myself have never watched Tough Enough, and I hope there's never another one; Maven, Nowinski, and Linda Miles all suck, and one doesn't even need to bring up Jackie Gayda (though Nowinski could make a nice Johnny Polo style manager, IMO). It seems like Matt and John have talent, but they probably won't ever learn how to properly string matches together--if only WWE would let Benoit or Eddie teach the new guys. Even giving John and Matt the benefit of the doubt, there shouldn't be any more Tough Enoughs; or, at the least, wait a year and a half so that the concept gets refreshed.

They think wrestlers use blood capsules to bleed that way.

creativename, the problem with the entire "yeah, but Maven and Nowinski suck" phrase is that not only are they both VERY green rookies, but how many wrestlers trained by Vince's boys have become EXTRAORDINARY? I think Nowinski will be very good one day, as he's already channelling some sneaky heel kinda stuff (he was my favorite wrestler in the Rumble this year, if only because of the spot where he though he eliminated Rey and Edge). Maven? Mostly look (JOSH SHOULD'VE WON, DAMMIT) and charisma.

But they definitely should wait a year or two before TE4 so that they can make it into a show about hopefuls learning the craft instead of a show about trainees playing pranks on each other and going to a far-off country.
