Guest ViciousFish Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 I watched the 'Stunning' Steve Austin/Ricky Steamboat match from the 'What?' DVD (I found it for $7 at WalMart) and it bothered me. It was the same guy, doing the same moves mostly but it wasn't near the same. He didn't have the same intensity. He was a great heel, especially for that time but I couldn't make myself like it.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 *EDIT* Nevermind, I had to read it again to understand. I think I got it.
Guest ViciousFish Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Does 3 years, a few injuries, a haircut and a name change really make that big of a difference or was it something else?
Guest Steviekick Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 That match was one of the reasons that I bought the DVD. I know what you mean. Technically, it was a great match. Something did wind up feeling lacking. The commentary was really bad and that hurt it. Austin's mannerisms and facial expressions also seemed to have changed. Stone Cold looks a lot tougher and has a much angrier look in his face than Stunning Steve. Basically his nonverbal communication is much more tough now.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 the Steamboat/Austin match from that DVD isn't exactly their best one. Their later Clash match where Steamboat got his career-ending injury was a lot better. Also, Stunning Steve and Stone Cold are two radically different personas, so if you go into the old WCW stuff of Austin's expecting the SC level of intensity, you're very much mistaken.
Guest Luke Cage Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 I saw him live at the Baltimore Arena. He and Dustin Rhodes put on one hell of a great match. Steve was and is a great pro.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Stunning Steve - Still doing the moves he does now. SCSA - Doing the regular moves, has a haircut, and oh yeah... Goes over everyone in the company and probably a few people in the crowd too. =b
Guest Steviekick Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 damn you all...i'm now watching the What?!??!?! DVD
Guest MaxPower27 Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Wasn't the Stunning Steve character a bit more "natural heel"? As in, random "trick knee" shots, and various heel manuevers.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Yeah, Stunning Steve was pretty much Ric Flair-Lite.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Still entertaining as hell though. That trick knee bit gets me laughing EVERYTIME. Especially with Heenan on commentary.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Oh, I wasn't implying that he wasn't entertaining, though. I remember seeing the trick knee live once, the crowd got on his ass about it and he had this huge grin plastered on his face.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 That was one of the best things about seeing him in that persona as well as the Blondes. You could tell that he was enjoying himself. I love the heel Austin SEG
Guest razazteca Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 Have you seen Steve Austin from his days in WCCW or USWA days in his matches vs Chris Adams? I think ECW is the birth place of the Stone Cold character, when he became intense in his promos.
Guest Dillon Likes Bossman Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Stunning Steve v. Chris Adams "COME AS YOU ARE" match. Classic.....crap. Yea I saw those matches on some weird show thats on at 2am on a local station called UPW "Slams and Jams".
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Stunning Steve --- Cocky, no good sonuvabitch Stone Cold --- Tough, pissed off sonuvabitch My favorite Stunning Steve moment was during that Clash match against Steamboat in 1994 where Austin was getting frusturated with Ricky, so he started to slap him around a bit. Ricky then began to slowly get up. What does Austin do? Put a finishing hold on him? Oh no, he kept on smacking him around giving The Dragon a chance to recover. He even gets on his feet with the crowd roaring in approval. Steamboat is PISSED! Trying to fight the sweat out of his eyes, Austin simply starts shoving Ricky's head away a couple of times causing Steamboat to go postal on Austin's ass and win his title. It doesn't get much more heelish than that.
Guest geniusMoment Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Favorite all time steve austin character has to be Superstar Steve Austin. I would mark out huge if the theme from Jesus Christ Superstar started blaring over the speakers monday night.
