Guest Slapnuts00 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 I've never seen any MMA before, but the combination of a disapoiting pro wrestling product, and a constant buzz on MMA from places like The Wrestling Observer, I've decided I'd like to give them a shot. Luckily there's a UFC show at the end of this week and a Pride show next week. Anyone want to sell me on these? Are they projected to be "good" shows? How would a life long pro wrestling fan enjoy them? Anything I should know? Just figured I'd get a primer. Thanks.
Guest Insane Bump Machine Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Just read this thread: http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...=ST&f=2&t=33160
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 The UFC show looks good - it has a bit of everything. It has the 'legend' match in Kimo vs. Tank Abbott (which should be ok cause both guys aren't very good, but sometimes that's a good thing). It has a marquee match in Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell. Pedro Rizzo vs. Tra Telligman should be a barnburner (if their last match was any indication). Vernon Tiger White vs. Ian Freeman should be really good. Frank Mir vs. Wes Sims should be good. Vitor Belfort vs. Marvin Eastman will either big really good or really bad based on which Vitor shows up (Vitor 5 years ago who was breathtaking, or Vitor 2 years ago who was sleep-inducing). Matt Lindland vs. Falaniko Vitale will be... um... well, Lindland is a great amateur wrestler (silver medal in the 2000 olympics), but he is mainly boring Ground and Pound (in that he will take his opponent to the ground, put him against the fence, and punch them into submission.) Yves Edwards vs. Eddie Ruiz should be good though. http://www.sherdog.com/articles/ufc43previ...3preview_01.htm Here's a preview WAY WAY WAY better than anything I could give you. I don't like to shill the UFC as much as I do with Pride. The last UFC show was good, but not good good. This show looks to be better - and probably the best since UFC 40. The last Pride show was AMAZING and the next Pride looks to be a contender.
Guest Army Eye Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Good time to get started, The last UFC was not that good at all, but the one coming this Friday looks very solid. And the next Pride show as usual looks to be awesome. As a pro wrestling fan I think you'll feel right at home with Pride especially.. but both upcoming shows should be easily worth the money.
Guest cynicalprofit Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 If you want to hunt it down, the UFC Year end specatcular, or whatever it was called, it was 6 freaking hours long, and covered ufc 1-40, is nothing short of AWESOME. Seriously that tape is golden. And a great way to kill a day and show you how ufc evolved.
Guest The Son of Sting Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Order the Pride show definatly. You might want to check these out if your new to mma. Pride/K1: Shockwave - a good place to start i think as it covers different styles and is just a great show. Check out Pride 21 for Frye-Takayama proberly the greatest brawl in MMA.
Guest Jimmy Saint Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 How would a life long pro wrestling fan enjoy them? You will probably get into and enjoy the build which many of the matches have. Some such as Tito vs Ken Shamrock or Baroni vs Lindland have great angles and personal issues that are as good as any wrestling storyline. Pride has had its moments which could also be scripted Jackson vs Silva face off at the last Pride or the whole Gracie fammily vs Sakuraba saga. All this will probably help suck you in and you get the pay off that these guys are beating the shit out of each other for real at the end of the day. Get both events as they both look to have some good matches and will give you an idea at what each organisation is about. And read that big ass thread here about each one as you will have some idea of who the fighters are. Then find a good tape dealer and start spending.
Guest Slapnuts00 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 I'm THERE Another question I'd wondered is are there "storylines" behind the fights or is it more like boxing where it's just 2 ranked guys fight?
Guest Lei Tong Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 For the most part, fights are usually between two guys with a good deal of respect for each other, so the drama is pretty subdued. However, there are the aforementioned grudge matches (Ortiz/Shamrock, Lindland/Baroni), although those are usually few and far between. Also, I think if you're new to the sport, you should probably start with PRIDE, not because it's a whole lot better than the UFC, but because it adds a bit of pro wrestling flair to MMA, and also because that their sometimes questionable match-making decisions lead to very exciting beatdowns (such as Takayam vs. anyone). However, UFC does indeed have some problems of it's own, such as a revolving door of fighters (it's nic eto see new faces, but it'd be nicer to actually get to know a guy before he's kicked to the curb), sometimes boring fights (which is usually a combination of close skill levels and the double-edged sword that is the Octagon), and a somewhat amateurish feel to some of it's production. Also, on the topic of the cage, I think it gets a little blown out of proportion as far as how much it helps/handicaps certain fighters. Yes, Hughes uses the cage very well and to his advantage, but there are also tons of guys who know how to use the cage from the bottom equally as well (it was intergral in Josh Barnett defeating Couture), so it's not a totallly one sided weapon for wrestlers/ground & pounders.
