Seriously man, I'm talking to Spicy here, I know you don't like the way they've been talking, so me, a nice guy, I'll tell you. Your stuff, it's not very good. Ask anybody besides your mother, they'll tell you the same. It is apparently working for you, so don't quit doing it. I'm not even going to say quit sharing it, but quit being so defensive.

You got it.

And thanks Edwin, I actually do appreciate the help.

It's the most playful book of language I've ever read. I loves it.

'finnegans wake' is a thousand times moreso (home of the lovely word "hierarchitechtiptitoploftical" that i wouldn't stop saying once i learned how TO say it), so you may want to check it out just for that.

but it's also a thousand times more dense, which more or less followed the trend throughout his life: i read 'dubliners' in 3 days, 'portrait' in a week, 'ulysses' in 3 weeks, and it took me five months to get through the wake.

and unlike 'ulysses', there's no strong content to build upon & the tone of the book never changes. aside from the glorious final chapter, if you read the first hundred pages, you've essentially read the next five hundred.

This might go better on my Poets and Poetry thread, but I was already here, so I shall state this.

If anyone wants to write a monologue or whatever, I'd suggest you read some dramatic monologues by Robert Browning. What few I've read have been pretty good, if not a bit creepy or at least a bit odd in some ways (Porphyia's Lover, anyone?). I'm not saying to copy his style or anything, but maybe by reading some monologues by a guy who's pretty good at them, you can get a better understanding of what your monologue should be like. Or maybe I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about (Wouldn't be the first time).

If I can find any more of horrible things I've written (Perhaps keeping files along with the actual 'hard copy' of the poem is a good idea), I might perchance share them. I certainly haven't gotten any (As Dylan would say) "hot fire" from anybody. I'm just surprised that I got up to second place for Songs of a Sunset for a local writer's showcase thing.

Water

Sometimes the water's too cold

Sometimes the weather's too hot

But when the journey takes us to this

A place we know we must face

It's our time to shake off this fear

And be bold

And when I come to this drink

It's water I know I can sip

A cold that's so frightening

And yet so inviting

I'll take it bit by bit

Sometimes we stand at the rim

And we need a helping hand

The person who comes to our aid

Is a person we least expect

It's our time to shake off this fear

And jump in

And when I come to this drink

It's water I know I can sip

A cold that's so frightening

And yet so inviting

I'll take it bit by bit

I'm refreshed right down to my soul

Like candles of light in the dark

My life is in my control

And when I come to this drink

It's water I know I can sip

A cold that's so frightening

And yet so inviting

I'll take it bit by bit

And when I come to this drink

It's water I know I can sip

A cold that's so frightening

And yet so inviting

I'll take it bit by bit

In the Cloisters

The sun crept o'er the cloisters,

In corners lisped the breeze,

And from the blue of heaven

Strayed the songbird's melodies.

There was something singing somewhere.

And I sensed its thrilling strains,

'Twas the spirit of the singing,

Going through my surging veins.

The grasses swayed in rythm,

While the shadows onward stole,

And as the day passed outward,

I could hear a far bell toll.

I could hear it tolling somewhere,

tolling o'er the mysterious plains,

'Twas the bell that called to battle,

Going tolling through my veins.

These pensive linked arches,

that stretch away in time,

through happy years are searching,

For the simple and sublime.

But there's laughter ringing somewhere,

Ringing out in joyous strains;

'Tis the laughter of the happy

Going ringing through my veins.

And hushed but pleasant thoughts

Go straying through the naves,

Like somnolent, soft murmers

From the ever-lapping waves.

But there's someone singing somwhere,

Singing clear o'er waves and plains;

'Tis their singing of her praises

Going ringing through my veins.

A little rap...

What Friends Do

I got 17 lines with 16 rhymes, word

A few pats on the back and you keep me assured

You heard, sick with the spoken word

My true test, stickin' with my friends

When they're all I got left

They hang with me when girls they come and go

Tryin' to break my flow, you never know

When the right one comes along

But they know, they'll tell you so

The good ones, they got your back

And they protect you from attack

As it comes, you least expect it

Sometimes random, a few times directed

Deal with it as a tandem, or even a group

You made yourself a dupe, so what?

When conflict rises up, you show up

That's what your friends do, they help you grow up

Always look for the best in your life

This could be your last day

Times like these you need friends in your life

When all material goes away

Right here, rockin' badassitude

No time, for a bad attitude

No point in dwelling on the negative

Too many good times I have yet to give

Out to my friends, they've truly had it comin'

Always catching up to me when I'm runnin'

Or rollin' too fast, if you know me

Maybe you can show me what I mean when I say

Always look for the best in your life

This could be your last day

Times like these you need friends in your life

When all material goes away

This could be it, could be your last dance

But you can live with yourself if you take that chance

I heard, could be the last day for romance

Absurd, but don't hang your hat on just reason

Might be just another one of those seasons, of change

I'm going up and down on the range

This lyrical ability, of which I thought I had none

Miracle of stability, friends telling me to try some

Rapping, rhyming, a little song writing

Itself, dancing out of my mind weaving

No, my friends, I would never be deceiving

I stand, or sit here, as just one person

My light is lit here, my inspiration

My friends,

They taught me one major lesson

When conflict rises up, you show up

That's what your friends do, they help you grow up

Always look for the best in your life

This could be your last day

Times like these you need friends in your life

When all material goes away

Poetry news: I saw Seamus Heaney read last night. It was fantastic. He read pieces from his Beowulf translation, and from poetry throughout his career. I'm going to hopefully pick up his new translation of Antigone this weekend.

Things that are awesome = that.

Yeah, he read the beginning - the "Watchman's War" - part. The agony of Clytemnestra's love shout and all. I would have liked to hear the whole thing, but he was going for breadth of catalog rather than just a few longer pieces, which worked well. He read a lot of his earlier works too, and listening to the progression to more recent work was pretty great.

This was in Charlottesville, VA, at the University of Virginia. So he was actually pretty close. I'm not sure if he's touring right now for his new collection, or if our English department just managed to get him in here on one hell of a boon.

Yeah, but it requires a flow, and well the lyrics are really not that deep. It sounds like something LL Cool J would do though.
