Guest Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 I just rewatched Summerslam 92 and in his promo before the IC match, the British Bulldog says he worked 'two years' to get his IC title shot and he cries after winning the title. Nowadays, you can become a number one heavyweight title contender by coming in to the fed and losing one watch at WM. And some people on this board think the IC title should be done away with because its doesnt mean anything anymore. A lot changes in 10 years. (not to mention the state of the Hart family)
Guest RickyChosyu Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 True, the World Title has been hurt by bad booking in some ways, but in others, it has improved recently. The idea that HHH, Taker, Austin, and Jericho are all trying to win it makes it seem more important, even though it's being held by the wrong people as of late. As for the IC title, it doesn't mean as much as much as it used to, but that doesn't mean it isn't needed. A midcard belt isn't a bad thing and I hope Eddy is really given a chance to run with the ball on his title reign.
Guest Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Having a few different guys fighting for #1 contender spots makes the title seem important again. Hogan running around with the WWf title doesn't help. Wait?!?!?!? Did I just say Hogan Running? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Anyway, last time the WWF did this was late 2000. Armageddon. 6 guys fighting in "#### in the Cell."
Guest Risk Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Why can you say shit and fuck on this board but can't say #### and ####? Anyways... The WWF Heavyweight title lost all value when Vince won it. What an egomaniac.
Guest Mad Dog Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Another thing to think about is that there were only 3 titles back then compared to the 6 you have now. Now a person has twice as many chances to claim a title. The WWF also has this new policy of giving everyone at least one title shot. Add to that they shortened title reigns and value just sinks.
Guest Risk Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 I've always hated the name "Intercontinental", because it makes it sound like a World title, but I agree there should only be three titles. They NEED prestige with football coming back to Mondays.
Guest JMTapes Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 The problem with the IC Title is that wrestling is overexposed. Years ago, the Champ may not even appear on TV, let alone defend the belt. That's why I LOVED when Jannetty won the belt. Just because Michaels had had it for 8 months, and a new champ was fresh. -Jim Same with all titles, really..
Guest Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Hogan shouldn't be the champ anymore. I think most would agree. The IC title had lost meaning for a while. I actually enjoyed the Lance Storm/Edge feud, so I'd say that was the last time it had prestige. But the RVD/Eddie feud has a lot of potential and they're giving a good name back to the belt. It takes me a few moments to remember who the European champ is sometimes. The tag belts have gone straight to hell. Haven't had meaning since the WWF let Spike and Taz run with them for a prolonged period of time. Now, add to that the fact that there is no more tag team division and you have a lot of garbage. The hardcore title never really was that important. The cruiserweight title was a non-factor for a long time, but now that the WWF is finally giving it attention with a Tajiri/Kidman feud and the fact that I'm a Tajiri mark, it is currently the title that I am most interested in. The women's title is actually pretty decent with Jazz as the unstoppable force. Wait, let me try... Hell in a Cell. Shit. Fuck.
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 While not necessarily agreeing with the choice of champions, I think the WWF are going about promoting the belt in the right way. Before the split, there seemed to be a WWF title match at least once a week on TV. Now, apart from the HHH/Steph/Jericho farce, there hasn't been a title match on free TV since before Wrestlemania, and the "feud" between the two HHHs was based only on them both wanting to be champion, rather than a coffee spill or a shampoo advert! The same seems to be happening lower in the card too, with the belts (apart from HC) being defended less on TV in recent weeks.
Guest Posted April 29, 2002 Report Posted April 29, 2002 The Split was very good for the belts, it allows that little bit more urgency and prestige to the titles- they're being won for the shows as well as for the people. The WWF have got themselves in a corner right now, they've changed the belt toomuch already but they have to get it off Agent Orange. NOW!!!! Hell. Shit. Fuck. Spleen.
Guest Mystery Eskimo Posted April 29, 2002 Report Posted April 29, 2002 They also put the IC belt on Eddie too soon. This feud should have run to 4 or 5 matches. Eddie should have won it on the 2nd match, defended it twice by CHEATING!! and then have RVD win it back in the final pay off.
Guest Caliban Posted April 29, 2002 Report Posted April 29, 2002 I'm all for building a feud around the tried and tested "wrestler X has belt, wrestler Y wants belt" formula. But the writers got lazy with this in recent years - they just created more titles so that we can have more insta-feuds. Phasing out the European title would be a good idea, and since the split they seem to be going the right way about building up the Undisputed title, what with the No. 1 contedership being a big deal.
Guest Risk Posted April 29, 2002 Report Posted April 29, 2002 I think they should just have a Heavyweight and Cruiserweight division for the men. I also think they should keep the women's title. Jazz is great, she's like the Steve Austin of the women. There HAS to be a Molly/Jazz feud. I think all of these champions should drift from both shows. I also think the WWF should stop doing house shows, but THAT is a differant story.
Guest Caliban Posted April 29, 2002 Report Posted April 29, 2002 I agree with that, but I think they should attempt to restore some prestige to the Intercontinental title. Back in the day, whoever held the IC title was usually in line to be a WWF Champion down the line. Now it's been passed around more than Herpes. Made IC reigns longer, and it will regain it's prestige. And keep "hosses" like Albert away from it.

It takes prestige away from the Heavyweight and Cruiserweight titles, which SHOULD be the top belts IMO. I think the WWF should go without the tag titles for about five years and THEN bring them back.
