Ex-FBI official: I'm 'Deep Throat'

But Watergate reporter won't confirm, deny story

MSNBC staff and news service reports

Updated: 3:31 p.m. ET May 31, 2005

A former FBI official claims he was “Deep Throat,” the long-anonymous source who leaked secrets about President Nixon’s Watergate cover-up to The Washington Post, Vanity Fair reported Tuesday.

W. Mark Felt, 91, who was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s, kept the secret even from his family until 2002, when he confided to a friend that he had been Post reporter Bob Woodward’s source, the magazine said.

“I’m the guy they used to call Deep Throat,” he told lawyer John D. O’Connor, the author of the Vanity Fair article, the magazine said in a news release.

Felt, who said he was "only doing his duty" and did not seek to bring down Nixon over the cover-up of a break-in at Democratic Party offices in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., was initially adamant about remaining silent on the subject.

“I don’t think (being Deep Throat) was anything to be proud of,” Felt indicated to his son, Mark Jr., at one point, according to the article. “You (should) not leak information to anyone.”

Felt is a retiree living in Santa Rosa, Calif., with his daughter, Joan, the magazine said. He could not immediately be reached for comment by The Associated Press. His family members disagreed with their father, feeling that he should receive accolades for his role in Watergate before his death.

"The Felt family cooperated fully, providing old photographs for the story and agreeing to sit for portraits," Vanity Fair stated in a press release.

O’Connor is a lawyer at the San Francisco firm Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin. A receptionist there said O’Connor was out of the office but confirmed he was the author of the Vanity Fair article.

The existence of Deep Throat, nicknamed for a popular porn movie of the early 1970s, was revealed in Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s best-selling book “All the President’s Men.” In the hit movie based on the book, Deep Throat was played by Hal Holbrook.

No comment from Post, reporter

In 2003, Woodward and Bernstein reached an agreement to keep their Watergate papers at the University of Texas at Austin.

At the time, the pair said documents naming “Deep Throat” would be kept secure at an undisclosed location in Washington until the source’s death.

Bernstein issued a statement neither denying nor confirming Felt's claim. Bernstein stated he and Woodward would be keeping their pledge to reveal the source only once that person dies.

The Washington Post had no immediate comment on the report.

Well-kept secret

Who was the real Deep Throat was long a source of speculation and rumor.

Among those named over the years as Deep Throat were Assistant Attorney General Henry Peterson, deputy White House counsel Fred Fielding, and even ABC newswoman Diane Sawyer, who then worked in the White House press office. Ron Zeigler, Nixon’s press secretary, White House aide Steven Bull, speechwriters Ray Price and Pat Buchanan, and John Dean, the White House counsel who warned Nixon of “a cancer growing on the presidency,” also were considered candidates.

And some theorized Deep Throat wasn’t a single source at all but a composite figure.

The last time there was a flurry of focus on Felt was in 1999, when a high school senior in New York claimed that Bernstein's son let the secret slip at a summer camp.

At the time, Felt denied he was the man.

“I would have done better,” Felt told The Hartford Courant. “I would have been more effective. Deep Throat didn’t exactly bring the White House crashing down, did he?”

Chris Matthews, Host of MSNBC's Hardball who wrote a book about Watergate, said he wasn't surprised, adding that Felt "has always been the leading suspect."

Family reasons

In the article, O'Connor reports that Felt's children, Joan and Mark Jr., urged him to go public after he revealed his secret to them in 2002.

Felt argued with them, O'Connor writes, saying he didn't want the story out there.

But Joan is quoted as saying that "Bob Woodward's gonna get all the glory for this, but we could make at least enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the kids' education. Let's do it for the family."

O'Connor adds that Felt finally agreed, saying "that's a good reason" even though Mark Jr. recalls him as saying "he wasn't particularly interested" in disclosing the secret.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Well then you know he's lying. I live here and everyone around is stupid or demanding attention.

Or not...

The Washington Post has confirmed from Woodward and Bernstein that Felt is indeed Deep Throat.

At this point in his life, he has very little to lose and everything to gain by revealing he " deep throated". perhaps his family needs the cash which the publicity and a best selling novel would generate.

so, did they say why in the hell they would use Deep Throat?

I don't know if it was creative license or what, but in All the President's Men, Howard Simmons gave him that moniker.

Ben Bradlee: Where's the goddamn story?

Bob Woodward: The money's the key to whatever this is.

Ben Bradlee: Says who?

Howard Simons: Deep Throat.

Ben Bradlee: Who?

Howard Simons: Oh, that's Woodward's garage freak; his source in the executive department.

Ben Bradlee: Garage Freak? Jesus, what kind of a crazy fucking story is this? Who did you say?

Howard Simons: He's on deep background, I call him deep... throat.

This isn't as interesting as my pet theory that it was William Rehnquist. Therefore, it can't possibly be true.

so, did they say why in the hell they would use Deep Throat?

The way I've pieced it together, Throat was a heavy smoker (hence the Cigarette-Smoking Man on The X-Files) and as such spoke with a deep voice. Paired with the popularity of the Linda Lovelace film, it was natural.

I think they gave him the nickname Deep Throat because there was a popular adult movie out at the at the time by the same name.

Well, obviously. They didn't get the name from the ether. I'm just saying that's why he didn't end up as, say, The Man Behind The Green Door.

Maybe they figured that "deep pockets" means the person likes to spend a lot, so "Deep Throat" would mean that the person likes to talk a lot, since the vocal cords are located in the general "throat" area....

Yeah.

I had never even heard of "Deep Throat" until they mentioned the guy on Pardon the Interruption yesterday.

What a complete non-story.

Gee, it's over thirty years after Watergate, and the guy is past 90.  Who gives a shit?

Well, John Dean III is probably pissed. This puts an end to his lucrative string of "tell-all books where I tell everything EXCEPT who Deep Throat is because that's for the next book".

'Deep Throated' Media

Swallow Banker Lies

Watergate Coup d'Etat

By Henry Makow, PhD

6-4-5

In their exclusive clubs, central bankers and their CIA-CFR minions are toasting the gullibility of the American public and having a good laugh. While portraying Watergate as a victory for press freedom and democracy, again they made a mockery out of both.

Last week, they rolled out a senile man of 91, former FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt, and announced that he was the infamous "Deep Throat."

Ex-Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein admitted Felt provided clues that led to the 1974 impeachment of Richard Nixon for the Watergate burglary and obstruction of justice.

Watergate was a coup d'etat. Felt's true role is to deflect attention from the CIA. The family of central banker Eugene Meyer owns The Washington Post, which has long established ties to the CIA.

Nixon's Watergate missteps were an excuse to remove a popular President who had just won a landslide victory and had become a threat to central banker hegemony.

According to Seymour Hersh, in an article entitled "The Pardon," (Atlantic Monthly, Aug. 1983, p.69) a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recalled that on Dec. 22, 1973, Nixon tried to get military support to resist the "eastern elite."

"He kept on referring to the fact that he may be the last hope, [that] the eastern elite was out to get him. He kept saying, "This is our last and best hope. The last chance to resist the fascists [of the Left]." (William T. Still, New World Order, Ancient Plan of Secret Societies, p. 12)

According to Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin (The Unauthorized Biography of George Bush): "The reason the Watergate scandal escalated into the overthrow of Nixon has to do with the international monetary crisis of those years, and with Nixon's inability to manage the collapse of the Bretton Woods system and the US dollar in a way satisfactory to the Anglo-American financial elite...

"Broadly speaking, Watergate was a coup d'etat which was instrumental in laying the basis for the specific new type of authoritarian-totalitarian regime which now rules the United States. The purpose of the coup was to rearrange the dominant institutions of the US government so as to enhance their ability to carry out policies agreeable to the increasingly urgent dictates of the British [re. Rothschild] -dominated Morgan- Rockefeller-Mellon-Harriman financier faction."

A LITTLE HISTORY

As I have said, sham democracy is the bankers' preferred method of social control. They groom the candidates, own the media and pay the talking heads. If an elected official gets silly notions about defending the national interest, they arrange a plane cash or an impeachment.

Until 1972, Richard Nixon had been a compliant pawn of the Rothschild-Rockefeller cabal. In 1947, he answered an ad placed by some powerful businessmen looking for someone to run for Congress. The advertiser was none other than Prescott Bush, grandfather of Dubya, and a partner in Rothschild banking asset Brown Brothers Harriman.

After his humiliating defeat to California Governor Pat Brown in 1962, Nixon worked for John Mitchell, Nelson Rockefeller's personal attorney and lived rent-free in a posh apartment owned by Nelson Rockefeller. His job was to become President in 1968 when, to the consternation of his conservative supporters, he pursued Rockefeller's "internationalist" polices.

The bankers pulled the plug on Nixon because he was becoming unmanageable. Already before 1972, Nixon is heard on tape agreeing with Billy Graham that something had to be done about the "Jewish stranglehold" on the mass media or the "country will go down the drain." He also referred to elite-party-place Bohemian Grove as "the most faggy goddamn thing I've ever seen".

JIM HOUGAN WEIGHS IN

Jim Hougan, co-author "Silent Coup: The Removal of a President "(1992) believes Felt was badgered into playing this role by family and friends. Felt is 91 years old, and counting. A reporter who recently interviewed him found the interview an incoherent waste of time, and killed his own story.

According to Houghton, Felt wrote a book about his career in the FBI. In it, he goes out of the way to say that he met Woodward on a single occasion. This was in Felt's FBI office, and the upshot of it was that Felt told Woodward that he would not cooperate with him in his pursuit of "Watergate."

Houghton says no one in or around the Nixon White House was in a position to know all of the things that Throat is alleged to have told Woodward. For example, Felt had no way of knowing about the 18-and-a-half minute gap in Rosemary Woods' tape. This strongly suggests that Throat was a composite.

"What we have here, then, is the sad spectacle of an old man being manipulated," says Houghton. "The only person who meets [the Deep Throat] criterion, to my knowledge, is Robert Bennett. Now one of the most powerful men in the U.S. Senate, Bennett was President of the Robert R. Mullen Company in 1972-3. This was the CIA front for which Howard Hunt worked."

Houghton obtained a memo under the Freedom of Information Act in which Bennett admits he is briefing Bob Woodward. "Woodward's gratefulness was manifest in the way he kept the CIA, in general, and the Robert R. Mullen Company, in particular, out of his stories."

CONCLUSION

If we count the Kennedy Assasination, the impeachment of Richard Nixon was the second coup d'etat by the central bankers in a dozen years. They were steps leading to their attack on the World Trade Centre and the inception of the repressive Patriot Act.

Last week, the "free press" earned the title "Deep Throat" by demonstrating that, for a small price, it would swallow anything.

The carefully staged event illustrates how far it has gone from being guardian of the public interest to being an instrument of mass deception and social control. In the New World Order, traitors like Bob Woodward and Mark Felt are "heroes" while our defenders like Richard Nixon are defamed.

George Orwell famously said, "He who controls the past controls the future." If the best values of Western Civilization are to survive, historical truth clearly is something we must struggle to uphold.
