The State of the Union, 2006 edition.

Recommended Posts

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/31/bush.sotu/index.html

I started this seperately because the Republicans thread refers to 2005, and because it's the friggin' State of the Union. It looks like tonight's speech might actually be about stuff meaningful to Americans instead of slogans and countries most Americans can't find on a map.

Highly doubtful.

This is brutal...

Is it really necessary for these standing ovations at every comment? Just say what ya gotta say and get it over with christ.

The State of the Union has become this for a long time and it has become really old.

What's also old is the "don't stand if the guy isn't in your party" stuff. If you like what he said, clap. If you don't, be quiet. Fuck your party lines.

Given the increasing amount of pandering to the party's "base" we've seen over the last few elections, you really can't blame them. And its not like right/left wing talk shows won't be bitching about what guy did or didn't clap for what tomorrow.

Congress = trained monkeys dancing for the partisan hacks' amusement.

Here's one of those quotes that sounds good until you actually think about it...

As we make progress on the ground, and Iraqi forces increasingly take the lead, we should be able to further decrease our troop levels -- but those decisions will be made by our military commanders, not by politicians in Washington, D.C.

An amusing quote considering that Bush is both:

a) commander-in-chief of the U.S. military

and

b) a politician in Washington DC.

Unless he meant he's going back to Crawford, Texas for the remainder of the war (which is actually a possibility).

Of course what Bush probably means is that military necessity will determine troop levels rather than political considerations. But why start now?

Goddamn, you Americans sure do love your masturbatory applause.

Bush: I'd like to point out that I think American Cheddar is a better cheese then Swiss or Italian.

Aaaaaaaaand she's already been arrested for unfurling an anti-war banner in the chamber. Fuck yeah, fight the power.

It was an anti-war T-shirt as it turned out. That constituted a demonstration which is against Capitol rules inside the chamber, regardless of message.

She's still around? Really? Wow. I'm glad the media has more or less realized she is fucking insane.

Why can't we just go back to what George Washington did? He sent a letter to Congress, and called it good.

Goddammit, the board died, and I wrote a really good post. Believe it or not.

Anyways, the gist of it was that Sheehan was dumb for not busting out the shirt during the speech itself, especially since she probably knew very well that it'd get her kicked out at least and arrested at worst. Just do it during one of the standing ovations, like Superman rips out of his Clark Kent suit.

And Tim Russert said during the President's walk to the podium that the anti-war effort needs a non-cartoonish figure to represent it, that the Michael Moores and Cindy Sheehans do more to hurt their message than help. Well duh. John Murtha was looking like a good pointman until the smear machine went into effect.

"Michael Moore" is just the new media scapegoat to get out of debating issues. Anytime anyone goes on a show and is against the war, all the host does is repeatidly shout "your just michael moore.........michael moore...........alalalalalalal michael moore" It is getting tiresome, and is a very bullshit tactic.

It depends greatly upon what you're watching. Sounds like you watch nothing but Fox News, where mere minutes ago Sean Hannity tried to get into an argument about the military with Wesley Clark, a retired general.

Sean Hannity is a putz. At least Bill O'Reilly tries to "sound" like he's not a GOP hack.

Well when guys like Tim Russert are resorting to that tactic, then it is obvious the media doesn't even want to debate the issues anymore.
