Okay, I put in the 2001 KOTR tape today just because in 22 days the 2002 KOTR will be upon us and I wanted to see how things have changed since last year. After watching KOTR 01 I saw the following stuff done wrong and how it should be done to make KOTR good which it hasnt been since 99:

- First off, its amazing how overall good the ppv could of been if it hadnt been for stupid things. I mean the build up to the fueds was generally pretty good which I will get to in a minute here.

- UT/DDP Storyline FAILURE. Man I miss DDP and seeing his WWE return and how great the beginning of the UT/DDP saga was almost made me cry. But then like Austin said on Byte This, the booking SUCKED! Thats the first thing that needs to be looked at here is the absolute TERRIBLE booking and how it desperately needs to be redone. This week was a slight improvement but if we go back to the same crap again next week it wont work.

- KOTR Tournament. The tourney needs to be given time. I feel that time wasnt placed enough on the tournament and the focus wasnt all there. The brackets aren't up yet and if they arent up by this weeks RAW, I am going to get a little worried. Now this year its different I know and it should be interesting but hell if you dont put the focus on it and time on it, its gonna fail.

- The event needs to pay off. If by chance that the angles working up to the ppv are great and everyone gets real excited but the ppv fails to pass expectations, that will make it a failure. Now we should be use to failure after all the ridiculous and lousy crap we have been through but I dont think any of us are. 2001's KOTR didnt pay off, although the storylines were good and hype was good to, it didnt pay off at the end.

I know its still 3 weeks away but thats not long trust me. KOTR 2002 will be here before ya know it and I hope Vince really puts an honest effort in to his show. The last good KOTR I saw was in 98 and if played right, this show could be the beginning of a ratings uplift once people say that the WWE is on track again. Your Thoughts.

The whole concept of the king of the ring tournament is endurance.  3 matches in one night, that's what it's about... When they lose that, the appeal of it is gone.

Exactly, which is why Mabel shouldn't have ever won the damn thing.

They need someone like Rob Van Dam or Eddy Guerrero, or someone like them to win it, so they can play this up as a big factor.

The thing the Wwf misses almost each and every time with their KOTR's is the TOURNAMENT PSYCHOLOGY!  Mah Gawd, they DO know that fans can remember the last match don't they?  I would LOVE to see a whole drawn out tournament with someone in EACH match effecting the ones after it, and finally the finals...

I thought WM 4 was done really well, but lacked the workers to bring it all together. So the Wwf CAN book a 'smart' kotr, they just choose not to do it...WHICH PISSES ME OFF TO *NO* END!

KotR always anoys me, as nearly each year they could put together a great tournament and never do.

I think this years winner should be Brock. Have him steam roll through his matches.

KotR 00 being the best example of how they messed up what would have been a awsome tournament.

The matches should have been

Q - Finals

Angle vs Crash

Benoit vs Rikishi

Val vs Eddy

Jericho vs Bull

S - Finals

Angle vs Benoit

Jericho vs Eddy

Final

Angle vs Jericho

That line up could have given use three matches around the ***3/4 **** range.

Survivor Series 98 had sweet tournament psychology. Kane got screwed by Taker, so he came back and caused Taker to get DQed in his match against Rock. Vince didn't want Austin to win, so even when Bossman lost to him, he beat the crap out of him with the nightstick. Mankind's mystery opponent was really a jobber because Vince "wanted" him to win the tourney. These are just a few examples, but almost every match meant something.

Here's how I would book this year's King of the Ring...

Quarterfinals (split one half of the tourney for RAW and the other for Smackdown!)

Brock Lesnar vs. Random Miracle Jobber (Stasiak?)

Rob Van Dam vs. Booker T (hey it's always fun to watch)

Kidman vs. Chris Jericho (yes, Jericho in a bid for regaining respectability, and they could play this up too)

Lance Storm vs. The Hurricane

SemiFinals

BROCK!~ vs. ROB...VAN..DAM

Chris Jericho vs. The Hurricane

Finals

THE AYATOLAH OF ROCK AND ROLLAH, Y-2-J vs. BROCK~! (the winner here? Someneeds to decide, but they could use this tournament to turn Y2J face over the course of the night, or to turn Brock face, since inevitably one of them needs to be in that role..and Brock is starting to get a LOT of fans lately..)

1994 King of the Ring

1-2-3 Kid pulls the miracle upset over Jeff Jarrett, so Jarrett piledrives The Kid three times after the match.  Then in his match with Owen Hart, 1-2-3 didn't stand a chance due to the earlier injuries.

Little things like that make everything great.
