I'm sorry, but I have no comeback, when they simply say "It's fake." I mean, I can talk about it just being scripted, and that the wrestlers actually put their bodies on the line, but they simply don't listen. "It's fake."

This pisses me off more than anything.

Thoughts?

It's 'fixed' not fake. If a boxer takes a dive, up until the last bit, don't the punches still hurt? (sorry if it's a bad analogy, I know nothing of boxing)

Grab them, throw them against a nearby wall/table. Ask them if it was fake.

Wrestling's like a play.  Except with a lot more violence and men in tights.  Simple as that.

*Puts on his tights*

"We're MEN! We're MEN in TIGHTS!"

This has been a Robin Hood: Men in Tights moment from BIG Tim Livingston

Friend: "WRESTLING SUCKS! IT'S FAKE!"

Me: "Sure is. Oh by the way, you know that 'Matrix' movie you like so much? That's fake too."

Friend: "...Shut up!"

I've written about this is some other thread a couple of days ago but someone printed an article about pro wrestling in my hometown's newspaper... in the sports section, and by reading the editorials the next day, you would think it was a national crisis that broke out... anyway, most of the editorials were complaining about wrestling not being a sport, and being FAKE. They even took the time to ridicule it, calling the people that watched it morons. One particular letter had "Anybody can do that crap!" in one of the paragraphs... so allow me to post my response, which pretty much ended the debate

Sean Connery is an amazing actor. Most would call him brilliant. His ability to convey emotions both in his voice and in his actions is truly a wonderful sight if you're a true fan of cinema. However, he's an actor. What he does is recite scripted lines and perform choreographed movements. But when he does these things, he's applauded and given awards. When a professional wrestler does it, he's considered a phony, or what he does, as fake. Now, I'm not saying that there are wrestlers out there who are as good as Sean Connery in terms of acting. I'm just using him as an example of how his career in many ways parallels that of a Professional Wrestler. What the critics ignore about wrestling (or care to even know) is that the best wrestlers are actually some of the best-conditioned athletes in the world. They have to be. In most of the best wrestling matches, the two performers are required to keep moving at a steady pace for in some cases 45 minutes, much like boxing and of course amateur wrestling. And of course, aside from constant movement, you also have to take into account that they have to take bumps (falls) that in most cases would alarm a professional football player. Sure, they learn how to fall. But that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt when they do it. This isn't rocket science people.

Some of the greatest athletes of all time in other sports, have actually tried their hand at wrestling, and failed. Famous world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis trained as wrestler by the most respected champion of all time, recently deceased Lou Thesz (who was a legitimate wrestler as well). He gave up shortly after because he couldn't adjust to the strenuous tasks. I myself have been slammed around a wrestling ring (and yes, I "know how to fall") and I can tell you, the pain I have experienced after doing so is very real. So before some of you choose to be a critic about pro wrestling or the wrestler's ability, do some research and actually learn something about it. Criticizing wrestling without a fundamental knowledge of it is about as logical as someone criticizing the athletic abilities of football players without knowing anything about it other than they have to score touchdowns to win games. Read Lou Thesz's wonderful book Hooker, or watch the movie Beyond the Mat. Or better yet, step foot inside a wrestling ring… jump up in the air… land flat on your back… and afterwards I'll accept your criticism.

I don't like arguing with those people, as most the deepest they ever get in their argument is "They know how to fall." I just tell anyone who bitches and moans about wrestling being fake to watch Beyond the Mat. Speaking from experience, it's a lot more effective than just talking with them about something with which they know very little.
