Evidence and sightings of UFO's date back to pre Roman time.

Ancient cultures painted on caves things that looked vaguely like men in spacesuit type objects.

Most well regarded UFO believers and researchers feel only 20% of sightings are of an extraterestrial origin.

Betty Hill claimed to have been abducted in 1961 and after hypnosis in 1963 was able to draw a star map of a galactic field the Aliens showed her. The star field she drew was not recoginized by astronomers until a field matching Betty's drawing was discovered in 1969.

Various Astronauts (Buzz Aldrien and Neil Armstrong included) have said they saw UFOs in space

Some relegious leaders have suggested that Satan changes what his minions look like as time passes (thus the popularity of Aliens overtaking Leprechans, Fairies and what not of centuries past.

I'll add more ideas and argue as we ge the topic rolling.

You all are fucking crazy. I believe there's ET life out there, but only on sheer happenstance. In distant, distant galexies.

Do you KNOW how far it is to the next star? Really? It boggles the fuckin' mind.

If these life forms are upwards of a billion years advanced to us - based on when the stars and planets formed- then concievably then they are a billion years more advanced than us and can travel at remarkable speeds.

UFo's have been clocked at speeds by the military that are 4+ times faster than any human being could stand

I believe it has been determined by NASA that humans can resist up to mach 14

2 B-12's or F-16's or something were sent up after a UFO came in their territory. The speed of departure was documented from that.

If, as you say, Mach 14 (4764.06 m/s) is the fastest we can go, then those ships were going about 19060 m/s. Now, in order to be making any real headway in the Universe, they'd have to be going the speed of light - even at that speed, it would still take about 4 years to get here from the closest star to Earth.

The speed of light is like, 300,000,000 m/s.

So really, that closest star is like, the number of seconds in a year times 300,000,000 meters away. If they were only travelling 4X as fast as we can, they'd *still* need to be going a HELL of a lot faster.

I am far from a scientist... Stanton Friedman is a Nuclear physicist (sp?) and he broke down the speeds and how it was likely the space ships could travel. Maybe i better watch his documentary again.

Also...who knows how long Aliens may live? and what time of energy source is used? If they live a long time, then a long trip for science would be nothing for them.

PLUS... the military's UFO mph was a UFO merely escaping from our planes...it didn't necessisarily hit warp speed and shoot out at top speed possible.

To many unknown variants.

I suppose that there are a number of variables which could totally change things, especially since we really have no idea what an alien would be like at all, or what kind of energy they'd be able to generate if they had elements that don't exist on earth. Like, Super-Uraniam or some shit.

I basically just wanted to point out that "faster then mach 14" still doesn't even touch the kinda speeds that would be needed for any serious inter-stellar travel.

Logic about interplanetary life or the fact that they may be visiting Earth....

Damn it I'm going to end up talking about the "hollow moon" before this thread dies...

That was based upon measurements allegedly collected here, within the atmosphere. What kind of retarded aliens would gun their most powerful engines/propulsion devices before they got out into open space?

It's almost impossible to apply any sort of logic to this, as it's more feasible than not that our logic is completely wrong on everything, at least when it comes to this particular subject.

Best post in the thread.

I forget who said it, but this is a nice saying: "We have to accept one of two possibilities: either we are the only life in the universe, or we are not. Either possibility boggles the mind."

So it works like this:

1. UFOs are real aliens who have some method of travelling across vast distances;

or

2. There are no aliens (or none who've come to Earth, at least) and all of the evidence otherwise is a massive coincedence.

Either one of those choices offers some pretty awesome things to think about.

I howl at the hollow moon

A theory that suggests that the moon is a large hollow sphere. Backed up by little evidence, but still regarded by some as a possibility, hollow moon theory originated during seismological tests on the moon following the Lunar landings.

This occured most notably in November 1969 after seismometers were set up on the moons surface by the astronauts of Apollo XII. When the Lunar module had taken off, heading back to earth the astronauts discarded the ascent stage of the lunar module, dropping it on the moons surface, smashing the craft and creating a tremor that was picked up by the seismometers and when the NASA scientists heard the data stream, they couldn’t believe what they were hearing. The moon was ringing like a bell and continued to do so for around an hour.

After they had had a chance to analyse the seismological information, NASA declared that the moon seemed to be a hollow sphere with a metallic layer around 34-40 metres deep. No other type of evidence has yet been found to back up the theory that the moon is hollow.

And both possibilities are equally possible until we have true solid proof. It's like Schroedinger's Cat in space. Until we have that one piece of evidence that can push us one way or another, we are both alone and not alone in the universe at the same time.

...and the Face on Mars was disproven as random shadows.

Since when do UFOs have time trials? Is this Mario Kart?

"I made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs!"

Technically, the quote is "it's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs."

and in any case, a 'parsec' denotes distance. It's like saying "it's the ship that made the Kessel Run in 12 miles."

Possible.

The Kessel Run is a pathway from planet Kessel in the Star Wars galaxy used frequently by smugglers in the transport of precious Glitterstim spice.

A well-known but confusing description of the Kessel Run is made by Han Solo in A New Hope when he boasts to have made the run with the Millennium Falcon in "less than twelve parsecs." A parsec is a unit of distance, not a measure of time or speed. Some have explained this apparent error by postulating the presence of a black hole cluster (The Maw) close to Kessel, which is used by pilots to shorten the distance of the run.

According to Expanded Universe literature, navigating the Maw black hole cluster is extremely hazardous. Ships making runs must take long complex courses to avoid the dangerous singularities and gravity distortions of the cluster. However, it is speculated that Solo brazenly shaved by the gravity wells, thus achieving a run under a distance of 12 parsecs where a safer route would be much longer. This shorter run, by necessity, would require a faster ship than more circuitious routes, since a slower ship would not be able to resist the gravitational pull of the closer black-holes.

The question of whether Solo was boasting about the speed of his ship, or his skillful abilities at piloting is still debated amongst fans. One could also look at the wording of the quote and consider Solo may have been mentioning another aspect of the Falcon's fame that is unrelated to its speed - that she earned prestige for surviving a dangerous short-distanced Kessel Run, as well as being "fast".

A more straightforward explanation is that George Lucas, in writing the script, simply did not remember or realize that parsecs are not time measurements. According to some sources, Lucas did realize this, but wished to portray Han Solo as an absent-minded braggart who simply did not know what he was talking about. The bemused reactions of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker to Han's quip suggest that this could be the case.

These pictures in Biblical art are so silly... What did the ancient artists say "Well here's a celebratoral gathering but I'll toss a UFO in there"

I'm confused by the inconsistency in UFO abductions and attacks.

1> Why was Betty and Barney Hill and Travis Walton abducted (For example) and for the most part were left unharmed physically. Then Betty Cash and a number of others see a UFO up close and are both burned and/or suffer radiation poisoning from it.

2> Why no Humans left behind in a cattle mutilation fashion?
