Jericho's mic work

I find Jericho's promos to be vastly overrated. I am talking about his promos in 2002. All of them except the Rock promo have been weak. I totally do not buy this "living legend" gimmick. Nothing wrong with a whiny or arrogant character, but that is not what he comes off as. To me he comes off as Chris Jericho trying to act obnoxious. Nothing he says is natural. I don't buy that he really thinks he is a living legend for one second.

Kurt Angle plays this role a lot better. When he talks about how great he is, even when he is totally over the top, it still appears that he truely believes everything he says, that he is really that delusional and can't understand why the fans hate him.

Anyway, as I was saying about Jericho, it's obvious he is just trying to act annoying, and that is weaksauce. Anyone agree? Is he supposed to be like that? If so what exactly is the point?

I agree with you for the most part...

Jericho's work in WCW around 1998 where he had that *AWESOME* charecter, which was on fire at the time, was a prime example of what talent Jericho has. However his recent work lacks the zest it used to if you ask me, just a personal observation...

Then again, i mark for Taker ba-bay! WOO!

This has been the Takerific Taker Mark

I honestly can't remember a single Jericho promo since January out of the dozens he has done these past few months. I remember Angle's and Rock's promos like they happened yesterday. Jericho tries, but like HHH, he never really has anything interesting to say.

That's because Jericho doesn't have the creative control over his character like he had in WCW.  It's a WWE-booked character that they have Jericho portraying currently, which makes him sound like he's trying to be annoying and calling himself a "Living Legend".  That's the problem with the WWE creative team having control over a wrestler's character instead of the wrestler himself who knows how to be annoying and funny(in the case of Chris Jericho) without sounding so forced.  Jericho said one time in an interview that in WCW, he did have control of his character, but since he came to WWE, his control's limited now to the bookers.

With the way WWE's buried him as a heel, a face turn might freshen things up for him(unless he gets released by WWE next month from his expiring contract), but of course, his childish face humor, as before, would get stale in a few months again and from what we saw of how WWE booked him as a heel, we'd be hoping that he'd leave WWE for a rising promotion if they had to be in control of Jericho's character again instead of himself and continually make him look weak to just about any wrestler(main-eventer, upper mid-carder, low mid-carder).

Jericho's problem is his only workable role is a comedy character, which is fine for the midcard but stinks in the main event. His delivery isn't that great either. Personally I think Benoit is better on the mic, at least he can bring some emotion and intensity to his promos/angles.

Well Jericho's promos are better now then they were when he was a "face". It looks like they are letting him give some input on what he says, but he needs to have free reign creatively to return to his WCW level. Just tell him what the point of his promo is and let him write his own promo out.

Now about this whole "he can't sound like a comedy act as a main eventer". So does that mean that Rock's promo style is serious? Telling guys to stick objects up their ass and talking about pies and pastries is suppose to make Rock look serious?

You can't be serious.  Granted, Benoit did a good job Monday, but Jericho is clearly better on the mic than Benoit.  Anything over a couple minutes and Benoit looks lost.

i honestly can't see any fault in his mic work, other than it really used to bug me that his heel character couldn't talk in sentences.

I'd have to agree, the writers having more control of Jericho does hurt him alot. And the dude that thinks Benoit has better mic skills than Jericho is an Idiot. Norman Smiley, hell Meng, and Jerry Flynn have better skills than Benoit.

It is hard to do a memorable promo when you are not getting a good reason to cut a promo.  SInce the pre-RR promo he was second fiddle to the nWo leading up to NWO so no key promos there, WM lead in has already been covered many times, Backlash no match-no promos, and JD was McMahon's lackey to get HHH.

If the writers would just cut Jericho loose then he would be pure gold.  As much as I believe in the HHHating I am wondering if the writers don't want to cut him loose and show them up.

I don't know what weaksauce means, but if it means "his delivery is really forced and unnatural", then yeah, it is weaksauce.

I think the ONLY WWF heel promo Jericho has done that I've enjoyed was the one he cut on Ken Shamrock, when he was going on about how Shammy may have been a big shot in that fake Ultimate Fighting stuff, but that he was now in the real thing! Sports Entertainment!

Other than that, you're right, his promos aren't funny and he looks like he's trying to act obnoxious as opposed to being the little brat he was in WCW (Arrmmmbar!)

Jericho just isn't very good in the WWE. I liked him ALOT in WCW, but either WWE ruined his character or Jericho just didn't try after going to WWE.
