I apologize in advance if this topic was already covered.

To get in the KOTR mood I just popped in the 1st King of the Ring PPV from 1993. Decent show. You know, not the best, but still pretty good. So that got me to thinking, what was the BEST overall King of the Ring event? I'm not talking about the best Tournament or the best Championship match, I'm talking about the best King of the Ring event all around. From top to bottom, what KOTR do you think was the best?

Actually, KOTR 93 wasn't the first KOTR. I would have to say that 95 was the overall best I can remember though. j/k

I think 98 was easily the best, but after that I would go with 93 just cause of Perfect vs. Hart

For some reason King of the Ring seems to be that one PPV (actually, Backlash as well) of the year that tends to suck more than normal. I wonder why that is........is it the short, cookie-cutter matches from the tournament? Is it the storyline writer's block between Wrestlemania and Summerslam?

As for the question, I dug last year's show a lot. Haven't seen any of the older KOTR in awhile.

1993 because Bret put on two pretty good matches with Bigelow and Ramon plus an awesome one with Hennig.  I maybe alone on this, but I enjoyed that match more than the Summerslam 91 one.  Both great though.

Yous guys forgetting the GREATEST match under 5 minutes in wrestling HISTORY?

FOR SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Backlash 2000 was PPV of the year that year for me. It usually dissapoints, but that year it ruled.

Yeah, KOTR almost always comes off as a blah show. 98 sucked, to be frank. When the best match on the card is Rock/Shamrock, I think it's safe to say the show wasn't a scorcher. Weak undercard, weak tournament, and weak main event (near deaths aside) made it totally blah.

Agreed. I think 93 and 94 are the only ones I don't actively hate with a passion.

Well, when you look at the entire series of KOTR ppv's, clearly there is usually a sore thumb for each show.

However, the one KOTR ppv I can watch without hitting FF is KOTR 94.  Bret/Diesel, 123 Kid/Owen, 123 Kid/Jarrett, Razor/Owen are all great matches.  The other matches aren't so bad, and they are all pretty short and quick.

Damn and 94 was the one year I didn't watch....was it really that good?

I've always seen the KOTR as a very mediocre show as well.

Why do you hate KOTR 2001? Is there something about Shane McMahon smashing through glass windows that you disapprove of? Was Edge's win ot compelling enough? Should Rhyno have been there? Did the finish in the main event deflate you?

Yes, the Mighty One, it wasn't that bad of a show.  I'd rank it as the 3rd best PPV of that year, behind Summerslam and Wrestlemania X.

If you are interested on reading about all the PRE ppv King of the Ring winners read my latest column.

Despite a match that was way more brutal and entertaining than anyone expected, the show was just bad. From the very beginning with the booking of DDP to the last minute rumors of "Benoit and Jericho jumping ship" it was so '99 WCW that I had to wonder who was booking. And Edge's win wasn't compelling, it was almost an afterthought to Shane getting under Angle's skin as part of their feud which, despite a brutal match, didn't go anywhere. If you're going to have a match that openly disgusting and garbage-like in nature, at least do it for something important.

And the entire main event by itself deflated me, because it was horribly dissapointing. The whole show was a sham, if you ask me.

I liked King 98 the best personally

I love the Rock- Shamrock matches/feud.

Taker - Mankind HITC

Austin - Kane first blood partially in the cell was entertaining (the rematch the next night was better)

I believe I said, "the 1st King of the Ring PPV", not 1st King of the Ring tournament. Obviously there was tournaments in the past, but none were ever on Pay Per View. That was what I was getting at...

Anyways, I'm gonna have to go with either 1998 or 1993.

'98 had the most infamous match in WWF history, and yes we ALL marked out for poor ol' Mick Foley's leap. Other than that, it was a solid card all around, with good tournament matches (ie Owen vs Xpac) and a solid Main Event with Austin dropping the Title to Kane in a First Blood match. On to 1993, it was the first KOTR on PPV, so that in itself was significant there. Bret worked his ass off in every match he was in (ie  vs Perfect). I liked the HBK/Crush match actually and the end of Hulkamania was a highlight too. Good show in total, and it was the start of something great for the WWF.

Had I seen 98 live, maybe I would've liked it better (I ordered the PPV and my cable company never put it on. Jackasses then had the nerve to try to charge us for it...I'm glad I got DTV).

For the best, I'd say 93 (didn't see that live either, but it was damn good), or 96 (very underrated PPV. HBK/Bulldog, Ahmed/Goldust, I LIKED Taker/Mankind, and Austin 3:16).

bret hart is the greatest king of the ring ever IMO.  it's hard to be the best of all time and not be the best kind of the ring ever.

96. Austin/Mero was really good, and so was HBK/Bulldog. Birth of Austin 3:16 is always a nice highlight.

He also had the best 3 matches to win the crown.  Sorry, but those who only went through the semis & finals had it easy.  Thats why he's my pick for the best KOTR.

The only KOTR's I've seen are '93 and '94.  I remember liking '94 better, simply because I was a big Owen fan back then--the WM 10 match he had with Bret impressed the Hell out of me, and was certainly my U.S. MOTY for '94.

I can't actively give opinions on some of these shows since I have never seen KOTR 94, 95, 96, and 97.  I never cared all that much about the shows for some reason, it's just a step above an IYH I always thought.  The 1994 one sounds ok but not amazing on paper.....the 1995 one I might want to see once to confirm how bad it is, then burn the tape....1996 is one I definitely want to see, lots of good stuff there....1997 is a nothing show but I think has a good Austin/Michaels match.

From what I have seen I would say 1998 is the best one.  The tourney is pretty good, Outlaws actually work a decent match for once, the insane HIAC match is on it too, only the main event was kinda weak.

1993 is also a good show, but I rank it slightly lower since Yokozuna winning the world title is never a good thing.  The 1999 one I barely recall at all though I did see it, which isn't a good sign.  The 2000 one is somewhat lame too compared to the other 2000 shows.  2001 is a decent show with a wild Angle/Shane brawl but I don't like the main event at all.  Jericho and Austin just have no chemistry together and Benoit was hurt.

The best ever was 94.  Bret/Diesel for the first time was good, and got Diesel over as a monster.  It made people wonder if Bret would have kicked out of the powerbomb.  Jarrett vs. The 1-2-3 Kid was great, and then Jarrett was so pissed that he piledrove the Kid three times and gave him virtually no shot against Owen later.  Owen vs. Kid was an awesome match for 4 minutes.  Then Owen winning the KOTR and Neidhart turning on Bret was great.  Good card.

KOR 97 would have taken it if we had Bret - Shawn and Austin-Pillman!!!!

as it was I saw it live in the civic center, and even that couldnt save it.

1998 was prehaps the most rounded show ofthe bunch, but Owen Hart was the greatest King of them all. He still  bragged about it years after..."The King of Harts" was his moniker for the rest of his shortend career.

The 2000 KOTR should have been the best tournament ever.
