Vacant titles decided by DQ or countout

Recommended Posts

So the finish to Undertaker-Edge got me thinking:

What are some cases of a vacant title being won by DQ or countout?

I know it's happened but I'm drawing a blank.

HHH won the WWF Championship at Judgment Day 2000 because of a DQ.

Edit: Oh, I missed the vacant part.

The U.S. Title in 1993, I believe Dustin Rhodes won it by count out. I could be totally wrong though.

You're right. He beat Steamboat in the tournament final via count-out when Windham interfered. They had a rematch the next week with no conclusive finish.

Greg Gagne beat Adonis via CO to win the AWA TV Title tour IIRC

Actually he beat Ronnie Garvin via CO in 88 for the held up TV title as well

And they just showed clips of Gagne's win over Adonis on ESPN Classic like two weeks ago. I can't believe I forgot that one!

it was either TNA Final Resolution 2006 or 2007, but Abyss won the NWA title over Sting by DQ

That wasn't a vacant title though.

That is correct. I forgot about that for a while... forgivably, I expect...

A little trivia. Sting actually tried to convince management to let Abyss go over clean, but they wouldn't have any of it. Yes, you read that right. The company was in favor of that horrible finish, even though the top-booked talent was willing to "make" one of their home-grown characters.

TNA deserves the criticism that they get.

I believe Jericho beat Malenko for the vacant cruiserweight (or maybe TV) title at Bash at the Beach in 1998.

It was Jericho that won the Cruiserweight title. Dean had vacated it to prove he could win it legit from Jericho.
