Guest mickberna Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Okay, Hogan, Austin and Rocky have all made huge money as babyfaces, but from a critic's standpoint, has anyone ever been better as a babyface? I make this point after seeing a thread about the Rock... most agree that he is a better heel, but that seems to be the case for everybody, simply because of the nature of being a heel... it ultimately allows for more creativity. So, the question... has anyone (particularly main-eventers) ever been better as a babyface?
Guest Army Eye Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 RVD, Sting, Goldberg come to mind. But they're just miserable at being heels
Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 I'd have to say Undertaker... I mean i love what the guy is doin' now, but then i back anything Mean Mark does. Nothing will beat his deadman days though, where the lights would cut and the arena's roof would skyrocket into orbit...oh those were the days... This has been a nostalgic Taker Mark
Guest razazteca Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Booker T is best as a face, just compare Booker T from Invasion angle and the current angle of Booker T & Golddust. Rey Misterio Jr
Guest Anglesault Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Rey Misterio Jr Wasn't face Rey like the SAME character as heel Rey?
Guest Austin3164life Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Gotta go with The Book. He's alright as a heel but as a face he's fresh and extremely entertaining......
Guest cabbageboy Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Sting and GB did suck as heels because neither man tried to make it work. RVD was actually a great heel in ECW (during the Sabu feud and the WWF angle). He is better as a face though. I think people tend to judge RVD's heel potential based on the early alliance period when he didn't get any heel heat. Take into account that the WWF had plans on getting WCW/ECW a TV show and was going to need heels and faces, so they probably wanted RVD to be a face on that ill fated show.
Guest razazteca Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 I would like to say that Rey Rey of Filthy Animals was crap. Rey Misterio Jr of the early days during the Malenko feud were my favorite.
Guest RetroRob215 Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Mick Foley's personality came out as a face. I guess he was better face than heel. Although the original Mankind character was cool, he seemed to enjoy himself more as a face.
Guest notJames Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Dusty Rhodes. In case you don't remember, he did a short, lame-ass stint in the nWo. ABsoultely worthless. Not saying he's a great wrestler in any case. But his work as a heel was just noticeably appalling. And by the same token, add Rikishi to the list.
Guest undisputedjericho Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 I'd have to add WWE Jericho. Sure, it took a mean streak and a heel turn to get the WCW and WWF/E titles, but he's had a serious lack of a push as a heel. Face Jericho had great matches against HHH, Benoit, Angle. Heel Jericho had two great matches, both against Rock.
Guest mickberna Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Mick Foley's personality came out as a face. I guess he was better face than heel. Although the original Mankind character was cool, he seemed to enjoy himself more as a face. I've heard that Mick did incredible heel work in ECW, and was pretty much a heel his entire career before Dude Love. Anyone remember those days?
Guest SuperTonyJaymz Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Mick was an anti hardcore heel in ECW. He was a face for a bit in ECW, same with WCW.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Foley was one of the best heels ever...so I think he was better as a heel. RVD is a great face...so good they'd have trouble turning him now. Austin's best came as a heel IMO...the Stunning Steve, early Stone Cold and Paranoid Alliance Stone Cold ruled. Rock was a better heel...HHH obviously was. Booker was best as a face in WCW when he wore suits when he cut promos as champion.
Guest Some Guy Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Basically anyone who can't control the flow of a match very well is better as a face, so Booker, RVD, Hogan, Rock etc.. are better faces than heels. Austin's greatest run IMO was in 97 when his character was still fresh and he was the ultimate badass heel who got cheered, then through 98 until the present he got watered down and stale. I mean this from a pure character standpoint, money drawn and match quality are not what I'm talking about here. Although it doesn't fit my criteria I think that Benoit is better as a face than a heel, but may be that's just because I want to cheer for him and see him win matches.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Rikishi, for certain. He's just not a menacing heel. He's fat, people. Fat, while kinda goopy, is not so terrifying.
Guest dreamer420 Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 the rock was very profitable for the wwf as a face but the new names that will be are rvd, booker, goldust, and edge.
Guest TheSmarkzone Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 RVD, Sting, Goldberg, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker come to mind. Although Taker is a good bad-ass heel, he's an equally good babyface.
Guest TheSmarkzone Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Rikishi, for certain. He's just not a menacing heel. He's fat, people. Fat, while kinda goopy, is not so terrifying. Ever met him in person? You'd probably be pissing your pants if you had to fight him.
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Mick Foley's personality came out as a face. I guess he was better face than heel. Although the original Mankind character was cool, he seemed to enjoy himself more as a face. I've heard that Mick did incredible heel work in ECW, and was pretty much a heel his entire career before Dude Love. Anyone remember those days? Mick was a heel pretty much his whole career, and only when the lines between heel and face became a little more blurry could he be considered face. He was a heel in USWA (with Skandor Akbar's army in the feud against Eric Embry), UWF (teaming with Bob Orton), GCW (as part of an evil owner feud, where he teamed with Scotty Flamingo AKA Raven), and was supposed to be a heel in WCW. It was in WCW that he started getting more popular, but was still booked as a heel. It wasn't until ECW, where the fans got more of a choice in who was heel/face, that Foley started to really get face pops.
Guest Angle-plex Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 I like RVD better as a heel. His ECW character was heel, and he was much more entertaining.
Guest Redhawk Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Better as a babyface... Kane Booker T Sting Mankind/Cactus Jack/Dude Love Diamond Dallas Page Sid Viscious X-Pac Bradshaw and Faarooq Dudley Boyz Rikishi Too Cool/Too Much Bret Hart The Rock RVD Tazz Big Show
Guest Austin3164life Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 Bret Hart RVD Sting Booker T The Undertaker
Guest Some Guy Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 I thought Bret Hart's heel run in 97 was his best work in the WWF. Apparently a lot of you disagree.
Guest Kid Kablam Posted July 1, 2002 Report Posted July 1, 2002 The one person who I can't really make up my mind on is Chris Benoit. I mean, I love this guy as a heel, and that seems to be his natural persona. But when he was with Jericho and getting face pops, I was way into it. I guess he's better as a heel, but at the same time, he's a pretty damn good face.
