What could have been...

May 1996. Hall and Nash have just jumped ship from the WWF to WCW. They show up on Nitro, pretty much portraying their WWF characters of Razor Ramon and Diesel, and declare war on WCW. They insinuate that Vince McMahon has sent them down South to kill WCW and shut Eric Bischoff's big mouth. For example:

Scott Hall: "...and we're sick of it. We're taking over."

Eric Bischoff: "Who's WE?"

Scott Hall: "You know who."

Anyway, the WWF was pissed that Hall and Nash were portraying their WWF characters, and also that WCW was tricking the fans into thinking that this was an inter-promotional angle. At the Great American Bash, Bischoff even had to ask Hall and Nash straight-up if they worked for the WWF to clear the air.

My question is...what if the WWF HADN'T reacted negatively? What if they had played it up at WCW's expense? What if Vince had done the last thing that Eric Bischoff expected him to do? What if he went on Monday Night RAW, got in the ring with a mic, and said, "Yeah, that's right, I sent Razor and Diesel down to WCW to kill the company!"

Makes you wonder.

The thing is, I actually do wonder if Vince sent Hall and Nash sometimes. Nash started playing politics in WCW like never before. Since the fed was surviving more on Turner's big bucks through 98 more than actual storylines, it also makes you wonder if Russo was sent to finish the job.

I know. Highly, highly unlikely. But when you consider how brilliantly Montreal was pulled off (even the storylines portrayed Bret as a guy who was going paranoid and thinking he was losing his place in the company) you can't help but wonder how far ahead Vince thinks about things like this.

Mate, I think your overestimating mcmahon's intelligence considering all the crap he's putting us through right now.

And i will always consider the nwo angle the REAL AND ONLY TRUE invasion angle no matter how many times they re-invent the thing and it was so obvious that all their little "subtle" hints were the wwf which made it so mind-blowing and they've never been able to create an angle with such memorable situations as that.(I prefer the nwo over austin-mcmahon even though they essentially became the same thing in terms of staleness.)

I know. It's an overactive imagination. Kind of like the part of you in 1998 that would wonder what would happen if WWF and WCW had a brawl. You knew it wouldn't happen, but you couldn't help but tease your brain.

Also, they've been booking seemingly on cocktail napkins for over a year now. But now they're booking a week in advance, which is a start.

I wasn't around at the time, but I imagine the goofy turns would have soiled it. I mean, cmon, what past did the Big Show have with the WWF in 96? None? Then why is he there?

It's easy to say what could've been if the past was different, and in the end, leads a man to go insane.

Well...not really, but you catch my drift.

Yeah, that would have been smart. That would be basically saying "Hey, watch our competition!"

Maybe Vince knew a little about the state of affairs in WCW and figured that a guy like Nash would do what he did, but I don't think he did let him go with that intent. Just kind of, it could happen, let's see if it does.

But there's no way Vince would come out on Raw and talk about a storyline that the competition is running.
