Tonight, my beloved Playstation 2 of almost 5 years finally gave out on me. Can I have a moment of silence, please? I'll get one of the Slim PS2s to replace it, but it just won't be the same.

My PS2

Yeah, I put a lot of mileage on the thing. Now it won't even power up. I'm getting the new one as an early birthday present, so I figure that'll be better than getting my old one fixed but having it still crap out on me.

A lot of people like to trash Sony, but eh, my PSX from 1997 still works, and my PS2 from June 2000 is still going strong. Yet, my NES died after about 6-7 years, my SNES died after ~7 years and my gamecube crapped out on me in 18 months. So yea. If my PS2 crapped out on me now, I might just wait for the PS3 at this point, assuming it's backwards compatible, heh.

Before this thread I'd never even heard of a PS2 lasting over 2 years. That is of course it was played constantly.

Well, the more recent systems have more moving parts and are a bit more sophisticated so their lifespan is shorter than systems like the NES, whose only real problem was dust getting into the system and carts.

I mean, I probably could go get it fixed, but since I'm not getting a PS3 for a few years, just getting one brand new (since I'm only paying half since it is a b-day present, which probably would be how much I would pay to get my old one fixed in the first place) is the best way to go.
