Sure they'd get done, but not at pennies an hour, which would translate into higher prices at the grocery store, but also higher paychecks in general. Sounds ok to me. Umm, the paycheck ISNT any higher. If the cost of goods goes up because wages go up, NO ONE IS BETTER OFF! Yes you have more money, but it purchases less, and therefore you're not better off than you were before. In general, prices rising is a very bad thing for an economy. and inflation hurts the poorest much more than it hurts the rich. so if we use your suggestion, we'd hurt the poor more. It's INFLATION! INFLATION IS NOT GOOD! ARGH!!! And yeah there's a way to handle immigration better. Hello, welcome to America, work hard or go the fuck home. open borders!

I worked 3 jobs which totaled about 40 hours a week during my undergraduate degree, and a full-time job while I was getting my graduate. it sucks, but its doable. I've never once said that we couldn't do something like to promote and encourage educational attainment. Its one of a few very things I think the government can and should do. We could take all this money we spend on immigration enforcement and social welfare and turn it right around into funding an education for people who WANT to work their way out of poverty. But its easier to give a handout and ignore the real problem. The longer we go without addressing the growing educational disparity among Americans, the more of problem we will leave to the future, and the less solvable it will be. Don't take thsi the wrong way, but if you didn't complete high school, can't talk so that I can understand you, and lack ambition to improve your lot in life, that is not my concern and therefore, my government should not be paying money to support those kinds of behaviors. The immigration process is horrible, its mired in bureaucracy and we still use freaking quotas. I'm glad you recognize that I'm not being racist. I'm sick of how the government has chosen to address the problems low-skill low-education Americans face. Funding education, not food stamps, unemployment benefits, et. al, welfare shizzie (which includes the minimum wage) will not help us solve the long-term problem. But how does this work exactly when we have a minimum wage, it is part of the law, however when illegals flood over and do these jobs for under the minimum wage,? Isn't that artificially decreasing the wages due to the law being broken? I personally feel that Big Business wants illegal immigration to grow because it offers them cheap labor and it can tip the balance of the stuggle with labor unions in their favor by flooding the market place with labor. It is, by every piece of evidence we have available, its done nothing significant to improve the lot in life of poor Americans and mainly serves to fund teen's spending habits. Absolutely correct. To NoCal --Yes, that is what it does, and without these illegals, those jobs WOULDN'T be able to be done anyways, because it wouldnt be worth it for the employers to hire for it. Or we'd have less jobs available.

    College!

On pure aesthetics, FSU has amazingly hot girls. UVA and FSU are on par educationally speaking. UVA is pretty far out there from civilization. If I were you, I'd head to FSU. Good programs, and its cheap. I went to GaTech because I could get a full-ride from scholarships and HOPE. I used the money I would've spent to go to a gradute school that I wanted to go to. Graduate's more important anyways...bachelor's degrees are pretty cookie cutter as long as the school is not backwater. Let me repeat. FSU has hot (ter)chicks.

Does anyone understand "market forces dictate wages" or is that basic economic principle lost? These jobs don't pay SHIT because the market dictates that they don't pay SHIT. There is NOTHING that can be done to remedy this "problem" If you artificially increase wages, the ONLY thing you accomplish is short-term gain and long-term inflation. I swear this is why I get a bad wrap. Look, let them do our shitty jobs, our jobs that don't require an education. Them, while they do that (which makes them better off, actually), we edumacate our populace and do jobs that require and education. Both groups are better off. But its easier to whine and bitch and throw money at the problem. Or blame immigrants. Blame yourself if you cant get a good job. Blame the educational system and corrupt politicians you voted into office. But dont blame these immigrants

Illegal immigrants are not taking jobs that "normal America" wants or would take. Unless you didn't finish high school, or lack an education, or refuse to change with the times. Or you're on welfare. And yes, Y2J, you can make that comparision, even when accounting for minimum wages and health protection et. al. I'm not an economist/statistician for no reason in particular, so when I do say something like that, its backed up by research I'm aware of.

    School Lunch

At my high school, probably 50% of the kids were on reduced lunch. Healthy eating was no en vogue. People got fat. Gym class was not mandatory. I gotta agree with Smitty here. I think that we're saving pennies today and will be paying out the ass for health care costs in the fffuuuttttuu....wait, we already are. Wonderful. The way the schools handle health related issues, is deplorable. It took me to the end of college to wise up about my health and get serious about eating fruits/vegs and working out. I'm one of the lucky ones, because I still have a few years left to hammer in some muscle and get my habits right.

  20. If Mike or Marney have a problem with the facts surrounding the Islamic faith, they can suck my left nut. Islam, in the beginning, gave rise to an economic renessaince that the Protestant Reformation WISHED it could have been. The only difference was the institutions in place around it. Once the center (mo) fell, there was no represntative government back then, so things went back to the way of kings. Islam is currently undergoing its reformation before our very eyes

Fifthly, and Finally. Search through your textbooks, historical articles. Answer me the following: Has the prevention of the immigration of peoples from one region to another ever benefited the segregating region in the long run? The answer will be no. Don't beleive the hype they tell you about illegal immigration's effects on the US job market. Our unemployment is still ridiciously low compared to the rest of the world, our standard of living amongst the highest...we do more damage to our economy by NOT letting these people come in and work than we do by preventing these illegal immigrants from taking so-called American jobs. Fact: The majority of jobs illegal immigrants do are minimum wage, or day labor, that most Americans would NOT do, even when faced with the choice of that job or no income. http://www.woai.com/news/local/story.aspx?...68-5AEAB1EB0497

GMU is a commuter school, most students dont live on campus, and its very regional. Good graduate school for law and econ, otherwise completely average. It's also a very international school, alot of diversity on the campus They're going fucking nuts over there right now. People are driving into the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods, parkinh, and just running to the party. Yeah, and me and my roommate are two of em. Peace niggers

Danville, that's a bunch of bullshit. That's not how economies work, or function. If so, Ross Perot would have been right? What is so freaking bad about the free movement of labor? What is so bad about letting people who want to do what we would consider "shitty" jobs to do them, and free ourselves up for higher-paying jobs. I mean, that's the whole point of free trade and free labor. Protectionist measures, no matter what they are, have never helped an economy more than they have helped it , going back all the way to the industrial revolution. Good for these people. Good for them. And I'm sorry that your family is hurt by lower wages in the construction industry because there's a supply increase in labor available. Go get a college degree. We didn't stop technological advancement reducing the number of farmers, the number of buggy builders, the number of typists, assembly line workers, et. al.
