  1. I watched this a week or two ago. I thought Paul Roma was great, but this event was a low point for WCW. The Bash at the Beach from the same year was worse though. I was dissappointed to see that they included the Lifeguard match on the Savage DVD.

  2. I believe I saw this answer somewhere else. but why was Jake Roberts not at Summerslam 89? Was it drug suspension?

Speaking of Z-Man....Just recently saw his match against Bobby Eaton @ the Clash of the Champions in early 91. Anyone know if that was a botched finish? Looks like Eaton actially kicks out of the backslide but the ref's hand hits the mat so they had to say Z-Man won. I wonder if Eaton was to win the title that night.

Jake Roberts was put out of action thanks to the dasterdly Million Dollar Man and his Million Dollar Dream sleeper hold.

Z-man vs. "Beautiful" Bobby...I love that match.

  3. I enjoyed Cactus Jack's commentary on Smackdown. Anything is better than Jim Ross, except of course, the announce team for TNA. What does a Cactus Jack have to offer in the ring these days other than nostalgia? Stick to broadcasting, Jack.

This "Mainstream appeal" issue is overrated. You're either a wrestling fan or your not. If you aren't, then it doesn't matter if Mick Foley is the president of the USA. You're not going to watch.

  4. There were a lot of wrestlers who I knew were terrible when I was a kid. Here's a short list.

    • Sgt. Craig Pittman
    • Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker
    • Cobra
    • The Red Rooster
    • Honkytonk Man
    • Andre the Giant

I see Brutus Beefcake popping up a lot here. I loved Brutus as a kid. Looking back on his career, he was much better before he adopted the Barber gimmick, although his promo did improve as time went by. He was a good heel, though.

Andre was a scary guy. But, by the time of WrestleMania 6 I had figured out that if you employed a "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" strategy against him, you could beat him easily.

I thought that Rick Rude and Ted Dibease were terrible as well. I thought that it would be impossible for Rude to beat the Warrior at Mania 5. I switched the channel when Dibease was on. But, I have since changed my mind about both men and appreciate there work. They were definately two of the best. Rude was awesome in WCW.

  5. Axl Rose is one of the best songwriters in the last 30 years and has overcome a lot of personal adversity. He has a lot of potential and it's nice to see that it's not going to go to waste.

If you've been in the business for well over twenty years, can you still be talked about as "having a lot of potential"? Maybe it's because I'm so used to hearing the word in sports discussions when talking about prospects (once again, oyu know that place where sports intersects with music? Axl's there!) but doesn't sound right as a description of someone you're calling one of the best songwriters of the last thirty years (with which I would heartily disagree). At some point you shift from fulfilling potential to fulfilling expectations. Surely Axl Rose has done that. Do Stephen Malkmus, John Darnielle, Tom Waits, Jeff Tweedy, Michael Stipe, Bono, Thom Yorke, Morrissey, et al., have potential?

Yes, I would say that they do have potential. As long as there is music to be made and they're all still alive, these people have the potential to make great music. When you take into account his songwriting skills and meticulous craftsmanship in building a song, Axl does have potential to do great things. It's impossible to fulfill the expectations. Obviously, Axl Rose's focus is on making the best album he can make. I'm sure there's a lot of reasons why it's taken so long to come to fruition. One of those reasons would surely be artistic integrity rather than fulfilling expectations or appeasing the public.

  6.

I'm with Jaxl when he says he thinks of Axl as a" home sports team". Axl Rose is one of the best songwriters in the last 30 years and has overcome a lot of personal adversity. He has a lot of potential and it's nice to see that it's not going to go to waste. I expect to hear a lot of new songs from Axl Rose and his brand in the upcoming years and see what direction it takes. I really like the way he sounds on "Madagascar." Someone compared his sound on the song to Tom Waits.

On a related note, I think Canadian Dragon and a lot of other people have it wrong when they dismiss the album because it's been so long coming. It's an excellent album.

  7. So Sal Paolanonio reported that after questioning another one of the guys from the meeting (I'm forgetting which one he said) he found out that Walsh said during the meeting that although he didn't videotape the Rams walkthrough he fed information to a Patriots assistant coach about some of the stuff he saw during the walkthrough. The things he specifically mentioned were Marshall Faulk lining up in the kick return and some kind of motion from the tight ends based on certain defenses. I guess Goodell didn't think that was at all important.

Surely, that is why the Patriots beat the Rams.

  8. Was it just a coincidence that 3 days before the SuperBowl these allegations regarding their first SuperBowl popped up and that they would be called into a congressional hearing? I want to see an investigation into what Arlen Specter and the Philadelphia Eagles have to do with this whole situation. I call bullshit on pretty much all professional sports.
