  1. Hey,

I have a question for the mods here. I'm getting a radio show on the campus station where I will get to discuss pro wrestling and play some music. This is an awesome opportunity and I'd really appreciate it if I could get some listeners or anybody who wants to help out in general.

I want to keep from breaking the rules, so how would I go about advertising? I'm also looking for behind the scenes help so it wouldn't ONLY be advertising as TSM members are welcome to contribute.

  2. Sooooo... one of the bearers of the mantle for the retarded wing of the GOP is going to have an unwed teenage daughter with a baby? This means that there won't be any bullshit on that particular front regarding "family values," right? ... right? Fuck, it's going to happen anyway, isn't it.

No, the GOP doesn't care about 'Family Values' anymore. Sure they'll use 'Family Values' at the drop of a hat to try and hurt the Democrats, but within the party it doesn't matter. All that matters is the fact that this teenage girl DID NOT get an abortion, thus her family is a shining beacon of family values. Abortion trumps all.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Todd and Sarah Palin officially adopt the baby sometime soon. You know, so they can show America that they're there for their daughter and will help raise her child if she needs it.

  3. I bet NASCAR pulled in a ton more ad revenue than WCW, though.

Well yeah, I was just refuting the whole "wrestling was canceled for being rednecky" notion. NASCAR is a sponsor magnet so it probably pulls in a ton of money for whatever networks have it.

Anyway back to the topic at hand, could WCW had eventually found TV? I could see USA Network being willing to take WCW on, especially since the WWF left USA for more money and not because of USA wanting them gone. It seems like Bischoff and Fusient threw their hands up way too quickly.

  4. Both of my HTC phones have been dropped numerous times and the only time I had problems with one was when it literally fell on the corner of a baseboard. Right in the exact spot it needed to fall to shatter the screen.

Out of curiosity, how would you get that fixed? That's the exact same problem that I have with my HTC phone. I don't want to have to replace it (I have a shit ton of numbers in there) so I was wondering if the screen was replaceable.

  5. What was the exact reason for AOL Time Warner canceling the WCW shows anyway? I know supposedly they wanted to get away from the "low rent" appeal of wrestling (and anyone tuning into WCW at that point probably found the product pretty embarrassing), but Nitro was still getting decent ratings compared to their other programming, wasn't it?

Nitro got decent ratings wrestling shows don't generate the ad revenue that equal, or even lesser, rated shows do, because of the negative stigma that wrestling and wrestling fans have.

Even in 2001, wasn't Nitro TNTs highest rated show?

Ratings really don't matter if you aren't getting ad revenue to match. If a show has low ratings but high ad revenue (see St. Elsewhere), it'll stay on over a show with high ratings but low revenue. Ratings only matter if they correlate with ad revenue.

I seem to remember one of the higher-ups at Turner saying something to the effect of "I don't want that redneck shit on my channel". I could be wrong though. From late 2000, until the cancellation of WCW programming, I too will say the quality of the shows was drastically improving. The introduction of the Cruiserweight Tag division definitely helped liven things up.

I don't know if AOL Time Warner canceled WCW because of the redneck stigma around wrestling. TNT DID start broadcasting NASCAR in 2001 so if they were concerned about a redneck image, having NASCAR on probably wasn't the best move.

  6. -Whenever somebody shows up not scheduled for a match wearing their tights/ring attire. Cena coming back wearing kneepads and his sweatbands is one, but mostly when somebody has a t-shirt tucked into their tights or something...when they're just out there to TALK. Then they get challenged to a match later in the night, or some authority figure books them as a surprise, whatever. I do remember somebody doing that in street clothes and then wrestling in street clothes once or twice, but they usually come out to promo in their gear.

Maybe they figure they could be booked in a match at any moment so it's best to be prepared. After all, how many times has an authority figure said, "You have a match NOW?"

  7. New thing to anger me:

How fucking sensitive these new LCD screen phones are. I was walking today and slipped on a patch of ice, fucking phone RUINED. My old phone took way worse abuse than that and still functions to this day (I just gave it up when I got my current phone as a gift).

The phone breaking was a combination of three things:

    1. Me instinctively falling on my side.

    2. Having the phone on said side.

    3. LCD screen shattering on impact.

I'm going out of town for spring break and was supposed to call someone to meet up when I get there. Son of a bitch.

EDIT- Upon further inspection, it just needs a new LCD screen. Hopefully, my contact gets my Facebook message before I actually have to contact them. I also hope that I can get that damn thing replaced without going broke.

  8. But you can't really argue that God would endorse capitalism in the way that the Republican Party wants it.

Well, I wasn't. The whole approach of trying to parse what God's economic policy would be based on 2,000-year-old writings is stupid anyway. I think the Republicans are just staying in line with the whole Protestant Ethic thing, the merits of which can certainly be debated.

I was more trying to negate Glenn Beck than trying to argue whether or not God would endorse capitalism.

  10. The big surprised that turned out to be the Goldberg turn was supposed to be the Mandalay Entertainment(?) buying WCW for $600m.

It was actually Mandalay Sports Entertainment which was a division of ME, but this is correct.

Isn't it sad that Vince was able to buy WCW less than a year later for only $4m?

Someone got some serious money under the table for that whole ordeal...

You're comparing apples and oranges. Mandalay would have purchased the entire company, including talent contracts, television rights, the tape library and everything else that goes into running a wrestling promotion. Jamie Kellner killed that whole deal when he canceled WCW programming. Vince just scooped up the intellectual property and cherry-picked the few talents he wanted. He still got a hell of deal, but it's not really a comparable purchase.

The tape library ALONE was worth way more than what McMahon paid for the company. Not even in a fucking firesale should it have sold for nearly as low as it did.

When you consider some of the talent he scooped up as well that didn't elect to sit at home on their asses, it's obvious that some shady shit went down. If you can't see that, open your eyes. Everyone I've spoken with who was involved with WCW at the end, including my uncle all think the same thing as well. Someone at AOL Time Warner got paid off...most likely Siegel.

It's plausible though that AOL Time Warner just wanted WCW off the books in the worst way. Keep in mind that Fusient had pretty much bought WCW until Jamie Kellner canceled TV and Vince swooped in at the 11th hour. There was hardly enough time between Fusient pulling out and Vince buying for there to had been any shading dealings.

  11. Okay, but then John 3:17 is more precisely advocating the individual virtue of charity, rather than the state model of social democracy; and I'm not really sure if God has "views on the economy," anyway. The verse from Proverbs says not to lose sight of everything in your life in the pursuit of money, which is perfectly reasonable. Forsaking food and clothing for God-cred, though?

But you can't really argue that God would endorse capitalism in the way that the Republican Party wants it. My point in putting those out there was to show that going towards socialism would be closer to God's will since socialism is more closely aligned with the idea of helping others by pooling together resources as opposed to rewarding greed and excess like the conservative economic model does. I mean, if you're going to argue that God would dislike socialism, at least find scripture to support your point.

Then again, I'm not religious so my understanding of the Bible is nil.

  12. Hopefully this will spawn a few sequel dvds ala The Rise and Fall of ECW. Hopefully it's not too one-sided. WCW did have it's share of good stuff. I always watched WCW over the WWE if I had to choose just because I knew that I'd see corny storylines on both but I'd see the better wrestling on WCW.

What would you guys define as the Rise of WCW though? WCW was pretty much in the dumps financially until the nWo and you certainly couldn't start the DVD there.

You COULD start the DVD back in the mid-80s with Jim Crockett Promotions getting on WTBS but then the DVD becomes, "The Rise and Fall and Rise and Fall of WCW."

  13. i still WOOOOOO in public. dammit.

That only works if you're drunk and even then I'd advise against doing it. At least if you're drunk though, going "WOOOOO!" would be at least mildly acceptable.

And that linked to thread is just sad. If you're going to make wrestling references, at least work them seamlessly into conversation, don't force them. Some of these people threw in a wrestling reference and then was totally shocked when no one got it.

  14.

Do these wackjob Conservatives even read the Bible? The Bible ADVOCATES the sharing of wealth, for crying out loud.

    Some quotes:

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV, Matthew 6:24-25, 31-33)

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (NIV, Proverbs 23:4-5)

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? (NIV, 1 John 3:17)

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (NIV, 1 Timothy 6:17-19)

    ----

Seriously, does ANYONE in the Republican Party actually own a Bible? God's views on the economy are pretty damn liberal.

Vince still got an incredible bargain. Even if he had picked up the entire roster, I don't see the total cost of WCW coming near $50m, much less $500m.

  16. http://www.starregistry.com/?engine=google...CFQUWGgodVhoGDA

Sites like this. For only $54 you can name a star after yourself or a loved on blah blah blah...what the fuck. I can name a star after me right now if I want to. Who has star rights?

I hear these commercials all day at work

One of my former coworkers used this site to name a star after his wife and presented it to her as a birthday gift. To say she was unimpressed would be an understatement.

See, it would've worked if he had some something romantic to go along with it. Like play this song:

At least then the gift has a context.

EDIT- Also fuck Universal for disabling embedding

  17. - When you know a girl nicknamed Rocky and you only want to pick her up so you can use the pickup line, "I smell what you're cookin'"

    - Whenever you meet a Canadian, you have a burning desire to ask if they've ever heard of Bret Hart.

    - You refuse to ever donate to the World Wildlife Fund because of their part in bringing about the death of the World Wrestling Federation.

  18. This guy should've known better. Many employers prohibit visible tattoos and body piercings on the job and when you have a company like WWE involved where tattoos play a huge part in marketing, it should always be discussed before getting it done.

I'd agree with you, except that the WWE is not an employer. Vince has said it himself, the wrestlers are private contractors, and as private contractors they should have certain freedoms they don't right now. The tattoo thing is one, but the real issue in my mind is not being able to work anywhere else, and basically getting all the bullshit of being an employee without any of the benefit. That and, from what it sounds like, after this incident is the first time WWE brass has mentioned tattoos to them, so I really don't think losing his job is an appropriate punishment.

However, the pro wrestling industry exists within the sphere of visual entertainment. The maintenance of a certain look is a requirement in a field where you are probably going to be marketed on your looks. I don't think musicians are technically employees of their record labels either but they can probably be dropped if they dramatically change their look.

I'm sorry but it is well within WWE's rights to fire someone who changes their look without their permission. WWE is in the business of creating characters for people based heavily on their look. The acquisition of tattoos (without permission) impedes WWE's ability to create a gimmick for you.

  19. I don't know how, but ammonia is much worse than vinegar.

As for all that other shit, just lower the drinking age to 18 already. Jesus.

There's a bill in the New Hampshire state legislature to do it here in NH. However, I can't see it passing because of our incredible lack of a tax base here. If the state lost highway funding, we'd be fucked.

Having no income nor sales tax makes it hard to take a stand on something that could cost you money.
