I think making public challenges for fights went out of style when Axl Rose & Vince Neil were calling each other out in the 80s ... if Smothers wants a piece of JBL, I'm sure he knows how to get in touch with him and can ask him to meet in a dark alley somehere. Public challenges are teh suck.

re: the thread subject ... I'm pretty sure GG Allin did a few albums while behind bars. re: National Socialist Black Metal ... prefacing this by saying that I've never been racist or Nazi, but when I was a skinhead the metal kids were about as beloved as the jocks. I can't imagine the few RAC that I knew buddying up with a metalhead, even if they have a shared hatred of the Jews ... so it's still very weird for me to hear about that scene (someone correct if I'm wrong, and Burzum is someone other than the cat that I'm thinking of.)

yeah, but your "roommate" is your wife, Lushus ... doesn't really count.

When I had male roommates, yes. When I had female roomates, no.

Is Fonzie still on good graces with Vince & co? Or is he a persona non grata? I'd love it if he came back, even just to manage RVD.

Oh I think NHL hockey needs some improving. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Even I have to disagree with my "doesn't need improving" assertion ... so I will agree that the NHL does indeed need some improving. But I don't think that ties/shootouts are one of the areas that need to be changed or improved.

One can only hope that they're setting up for a Raven-Styles rematch and a Hardy-JJ feud ... if JJ attacked a Raven or Styles fan, that feud would be the logical next step.

zyn, I understand your point ... I'm just saying that - and I speak only for myself - that as soon as a show ends HERE (meaning the US) I presume it's common knowledge. I truthfully don't even think about other countries that might get a show on tape delay or whatever. I full on recognize how piss-annoying it must be to have things spoiled. I remember the pissing matches when people would talk about things like Wimbledon or the Australian Open or the Tour de France, which happen so early here in the US that they're not shown live. Someone inevitably posts a "holy crap, Lance Armstrong did such-and-such" and spoils it for the people who wanted to watch it unspoiled that night. But I don't see the rest of the board speaking in cryptic ways or using spoiler text just because a handful of people haven't had the chance to see the show yet.

I think we're all destined to go in circles with this, as I know that I won't be able to convinve any of you that ties aren't that bad, and I know that none of you will convince me that they are. Yes, winning and losing is the bottom line, but there's more to the game than that. I don't walk out of the arena stoked after every win; what if they played poorly and didn't deserve to win? What if they went 0 for 8 on the PP or let in 2 SH goals? Even with a win, I'll walk out pissed. And, conversely, they might lose a game on a fluke goal or just because the other goalie stood on his head ... does that mean I have to walk out bummed, just because the team lost? No, I'll walk out upset that they lost but pleased that they played well. Winning or losing isn't the be-all end-all for me when it comes to watching and enjoying a game. And thus ties don't bother me. Would a shootout be exciting? Yeah, the first few times. But once the new-ness wore off, it'd be just a cheap gimmick to 'improve' a game in a way that didn't need improving.

I hate to say it, but once the show has aired it's no longer a 'spoiler' even if it hasn't aired in your area ... this is really a North American-based message board and since more than 90% of us are North Americans, things that already aired here are really going to be considered public domain and common knowledge.

Other than times when the Bruins choked up a lead and ended with a tie instead of a win, I don't think I've walked out of a game disapointed because it ended in a tie. I'd rather watch an awesome game that ends in a tie than a less-than-awesome game that has a winner.

The really historical part of Yankee Stadium went out the window when they remodeled in the 70s ... in my eyes, their stadium is really only 30 years old. What are the odds the jackasses in NYC call this new stadium "the house that Jeter built"?

The closest would have been Col Debeers calling Jimmy Snuka a "member of the negroid race" ... but the Col was a heel, and thus was supposed to drawing boos and not cheers for his idiocy. -
2 men enter, one man leaves. Well, one man and one dotcom enter, one man leaves. Well, unless the dotcom wins, in which case one man and one dotcom enter, one dotcom leaves. Fuckit, 2 men enter, one man leaves.

I guess, kind of, Lushus. Sometimes it's used as a term of endearment, sometimes it's a diss, and sometimes it's just a word. -

Yeah, Irishmen. Some that are true-blue, born in Ireland and moved here and some that are just "Americans' that happen to be of Irish descent. -

In 2005 sure. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Aren't we talking about 2005? -
This thread did seem to go from people who enjoyed the show and posted their reactions and possible theories to being a thread filled with long-ass opinions that were seemingly supposed to be viewed as facts. I thought the thread was saved when people posted their "best of" and "worst of" choices, but evidently the lecture continues. I personally completely stopped reading SJ's posts when he posted this classic: As if his insight to the show was so much superior to anyone else's.

Czech, the world's not a black and white place. The winning team doesn't always play better, and the losing team doesn't always deserve to lose. In my mind, the winning team can't just say "we won, so this is what we did right, what we did to win". What about when Smith scored on his own goal - off of the back of Fuhr's legs ... what does Calgary look back at? "Well, we did a better job of not scoring on our own goal". ?!? Or, if shootouts get passed as a new rule, and a team wins on shootouts, what do they look back at? "well, we did a better job of scoring on today's shootout."? They'd still be playing to win, Rant. Just the same way that when a team loses a game, they were still playing to win. They just happened to not achieve their goal for that day. And it'd still be a competition, it just wouldn't be one that had a winner. But the teams could both take away what they did well, and what they did poorly, and thus be better prepared for future games.

First of all, the WWE dropped the ball by not having Hassan grab the mic when the fans started chanting USA during his matches to reiterate that HE IS AMERICAN. Call the fans dumbasses for not being able to comprehend that while he of Arab descent (and, yes, I know that he's actually Italian ... it's the gimmick I'm referring to, not the wrestler portraying said gimmick). Put the onus of the heat on him ragging on the fans, making him just a heel and not a foreigner. Keep the "my people have been persecuted" shtick, but do all the small things to make him an American, just one that happens to be of Arab descent. Second of all, I'm half-Irish and live in Boston, which is basically the has the heaviest Irish population in the US. I interact with Irishmen fresh off the boat from the homeland all the time, and hear the word 'mick' dropped pretty fuckign frequently. Mick should not be equated with 'nigger' or 'kike' or any of the other really slanderous slurs. It's in the middle ground, like 'dago', in that it's probably still offensive to some, but it's really not the universally offensive that some of the others are. -
That era Lex fit the Horsemen image better than Masters does now. Both have the cocky thing, yes, but Lex just fit better. Masters == Sid really is a better comparison, IMHO.
-
See, I don't think a tie is that bad. To me, shootouts are not part of the game.
-
Wait ... Windham was the enforcer of the Horsemen? I thought Arn assumed that role after Ole, and only was unseated from that role for people like Sid (who were otherwise worthless). But Windham was never the enforcer. And there is no reason to create a new 4 Horsemen. Just like there shouldn't be another Dangerous Alliance. (or Triple Threat or Devastation Incorporated or Hot Stuff & Hyatt or any other faction of the past) It'd be better to just create a new faction with a new name, with no ties to the past.

Changes I'd make ... 1) Contraction. This always pisses off fans in these areas, but it's illogical to have 3 teams in Cali, 2 in Florida, and one in places like Phoenix, Nashville, Columbus, etc. Contract the league down by 6 - 8 teams and you're losing the bottom defensemen and 4th line scrubs from each team. Get rid of Florida and have the Lightning play X number of games in Sunrise, get rid of the Ducks and Sharks (sorry UndertakerHart) and have the Kings play X number of games in Anaheim and SJ. The Celtics used to play some home games in Hartford, so it's nothing that hasn't been done before. I'd also have the teams that abandoned cities play some games in those cities (e.g. Colorado plays X games in Quebec City). 2) Rule changes. Adopt Sinden's rules. Go back to tag-up offsides. Add no-touch icing. Make icing still icing when a team is on the PK. Clutching and obstruction are to be called as seriously as highsticking or slashing. Get rid of that horrid "instigator" rule and let the players police themselves. 3) Goalie pads/new-fangled sticks. These 2 go hand-in-hand for me. Goalies equipment should be policed to stop the Irbe/Roy-style of sofa cushions for pads. But skaters that can already fire the puck at 100+ mph shouldn't be allowed to use sticks made of ANYTHING besides wood. 4) Sorry, but I HATE the idea of a shootout. I have no problems watching 60 minutes of regulation plus 5 minutes of OT and still have the game end in a tie, as long as those 65 minutes of hockey are pure entertainment. 5) International-sized ice ... man, I'd love to watch someone like Ilya or St Louis (the player, not the team) play with so much more ice to work with. And some small details ... Home teams wear white, road teams where dark. No 3rd sweaters. Rename the conferences and divisions as they were before the Bettman era (or, rename them with modern-names: Gretzky, Howe, Orr and Messier, or something like that). All star games are Campbell vs Wales, not NA vs the world.
