What's the loudest band you've ever seen live.

The thing that I liked about SBC, converge, was that they played such a kick-ass show regardless of where they were playing or who they were playing with. I saw them in the basement of a church in Reading MA that was so small that it didn't even have a stage, and there were more police & security present than there were fans. Yet they still played an amazing show and had such energy. Too few bands have the same passion anymore.

Bands that could have been bigger than they were

How about Monster Magnet? Spine of God and Dopes to Infinity are AWESOME albums that get next-to-no love. Even Superjudge and Tab are very good. Even the later songs that went big never really propelled them to any lasting fame. Dave Wyndorf = = the most underrated musician today.

What's the loudest band you've ever seen live.

The question should really be where's the loudest place you've seen a show, because seeing a band like Slayer at an amphitheatre would be less ear-bending than seeing them at a club. My loudest show was Sam Black Church/Slapshot/Bad Brains at the Channel in Boston. Each band got progressively louder (probably b/c they were all using Bad Brains amps) and SBC was plenty loud to begin with.

    Athletes you were wrong on

There aren't many players that I expect too much from, and thus get disapointed when they fail. It's kind of a cliche, but being from Boston you kind of learn to expect things to fall apart. There are definitely players that surpassed my expectations, though: Samsonov, for at least that first year, Raycroft (who now has to prove that he can maintain being a #1 goalie), and, most of all, Boynton. When he refused to sign with the Caps and then went back into the draft, I thought that he was a waste of a pick and there was no way the, ahem, frugal B's would be able to sign him. Now he's literally one of my favorite Bruins, and a legitimate #2 or 3 d-man. And, HarleyQuinn, how could you EVER think that "Coolio" Canty was a good choice?!?

    Super Bowl 39 odds

I agree with pinjockey ... you can't compare Plummer to the others ... he was a high draft pick that was supposed to be a difference-maker and a franchise QB. And thus far, he hasn't been anywhere close to reaching that potential. To compare him to undrafted, or lowly drafted, QB's only further proves the point: he's not a money QB.

    NBA odds

The only reason that the Celtics at 100-1 is a good bet is the fact that the NBA is going to realign to 6 divisions next year, and the Celts will be in a fairly weak division. (I think it's them, the Nets, the Knicks, the Raptors & the Sixers) While there's no really horrible team in the mix (e.g. Washington, Atlanta, Charlotte) there's also not a really dominant team, either. Whoever wins this division will probably earn the 3 seed, and thus have home court for at least one round of the playoffs. Once a team gets to the postseason, they have a reasonable chance of getting lucky at the right times and winning a surprise series or 2. I'd still not bet on it happening, but it's not entirely inconceivable. Does anyone know what the odds are for each team just winning their conference?

Some notes from your new Forum Mod

I have to admit that I'm less than thrilled about the switch to AIM in lieu of OaO-type threads. I do most of my posting while at work, so don't use IM (and also am on-line when there's not many other people on-line). If a OaO thread is too intimidating for someone to read through or join, then that's their loss. It's not difficult to read through the last page or 2 worth of posts and comment on what you want to. Could we at least create, and then pin, "This Week in the NHL" (and same for the NBA & NFL) when their respective seasons start?

The OAO Diva Search Thread for 07.19.04

If you really think they'll use that as a springboard to give Helms a new gimmick, then you're giving Gerwertz and the rest of the writing team more credit than they deserve. No, they'll repackage him, but as a super-VILLIAN instead of a super-hero. He'll sport the exact same look, but it'll be black and red instead of black and green. Look forward to super-villian Hurricane vs. S.H.I.T. for the PPV.

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=91390 WHA free-agent draft results ... picking Gagne first overall made sense, especially since it was done by Quebec (I have to admit that I hate the "Nordiks" name). But picking Travis Green second? Any rhyme or reason to a pick like that?!? And no surprise, Crosby went first overall in the actual draft. It'd be interesting for him to follow Gretzky's career path and play a year in the WHA before going to the NHL.

The OAO 'I Love the 90's" thread

As someone that stopped watching the series, I have to ask: does that mean that they didn't even mention wrestling during the late 90's? It seems that people on this board were pretty certain that they would.

Bands that could have been bigger than they were

Sorry it took me like 3 days to respond to this, I don't have a computer at my new apartment yet, and thus can only post at work (or if I go to a friend's house) ... Lushus, how can you compare ANY current new band to the Stones or Beatles or Led Zeppelin (or the others)? Those bands are like the upper echelon of music. Other than maybe a band like U2, there's not a band out there that will reach that level. People can circle jerk over Nirvana until they're blue in the face, but truthfully they've already failed to reach that level, and it's only been 10 years since they broke up. To compare a band like 311 to the Beatles is like saying that today's authors are comparable to Shakespeare or Hemingway: there just isn't anyone right now that will earn a spot on the immortals list. I agree with you on the band, but not on the era. I'm surprised their actual punk stuff (e.g. Mommy's Little Monster & the 1945 EP) didn't get more acclaim. MLM is a very good punk album, and Mike Ness definitely had the street cred to be a bigger punk icon. Maybe Prison Bound was just too country/non-punk and it killed their momentum.

    Choken One..........banned?

My personal opinion: banning someone - for offenses like stupidity and trolling - without warning is wrong. Banning someone after giving them fair warning that their posts are being scrutinized for content is not wrong. Since CO was told that he needed to get his shit together, and still did not, then I have no problem with his banning. It doesn't seem like a power-hungry mod, it seems like a mod trying to make the board a 'better place'.

Bands that could have been bigger than they were

The fact that 311 is headlining over The Roots shows that they're bigger than Korn. I think it's funny, I saw them play at some club in Ft Collins CO back in 1993 and they drew maybe 100 people; if you told me then that they'd still be relevant a decade later, I'd have laughed in your face.
  16. Apologizing for the good of the business = "I'm not sorry for what I said or how you felt about it ... I'm just sorry it's bad for the business that makes me money". An apology like that isn't really an apology, IMHO.

    NWA

Staravenger, who wrestled as the faces in this match? It seems like an odd mix of 6 heels fighting.

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

The most depressing thing about this whole conversation, Max, is how close the B's were to having a very good team only to have it all fall apart. They had a very good top line, a very good second line (for the first time in a long time), above average defensmen, and a very good goalie (which they've been without even longer than a real 2nd line). If they could have re-signed most of their FA's and built off of last year, the Bruins were a legitimate contender in the East. Instead, they'll be lucky to be a playoff team ... of course, there's a legitimate chance that there won't even BE a playoffs next year.
  19. Choken, do you really think the Hart DVD would outsell the Flair one? One of the reasons that the Flair DVD did so well was because of how much old-school footage was included. There was an entire generation of fans that bought that DVD even though they don't own any other wrestling DVD's, just because it was Ric Flair & old-school NWA footage. (one example: me) And a question for those saying that Hart is just responding to Flair's insults with some of his own: what about the article referenced by chaosrage, which has Hart slamming Flair worse than EITHER has done in this recent pissing match? Maybe Flair was just responding to that insult when he badmouthed Hart in his book.

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

I should have prefaced my statements with the acknowledgement that my top choice would be to keep Joe in Black & Gold. While he's not yet the dominant player that he could be, I really do think that he's one of the few franchise players in the league right now, and would rather him stay a Bruin his entire career. Having said that, though, if he really doesn't want to be here, he'll be a distraction and a hindrance and that'd be no good. The Colorado trade would produce better players for Thornton, but the team would still be lacking depth. Even with Tanguay, Hinote, Sammy & Nylander, they'd be struggling to produce two good lines. At least the Vancouver trade would enable the B's to have more depth; they wouldn't contend for the #1 seed, but they'd have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs.

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

Max, I like your trade with the Avs ... I'm a fan of both Hinote & Tanguay, and think that both would immediately help the B's. Plus, I'm a pretty outspoken PJ-hater (the guy is like an offensive black-hole, that actually sucks offense away from other Bruins when he's on the ice) so if we could move him it'd be great. I agree that my Sharks & Stars trades were pretty mediocre; I'm having a hard time finding a good team & trade. I'm trying to limit it to a Western Conference team, just because I'd hate to have Thornton stay in the East and actually show up in the playoffs some year and beat us. Truthfully, while the 'nucks would never make that deal, I'd probably take the deal that Rrrsh offered. Three half-way decent forwards and a not-bad defenseman for a player that doesn't want to be here? Good enough for me.

Bands that could have been bigger than they were

The Circle Jerks - Why is Black Flag so revered but the Jerks are not? Samhain - same question as above, but with the Misfits instead of Black Flag? Operation Ivy - gets some love, but really not as much as they deserve. And count me among those that question the Sublime love. The last girl that I dated (the one that drank too much, for those that are actually paying attention) was a HUGE Sublime fan, and made me listen to them everytime she drove anywhere. I tried and tried to dig it, but just wasn't feeling it. They're like a band that would have played at a college party, and was Ok to listen to, but not a band that should have gotten so big.

    NHL Off-Season Thread...

Max, if the B's really do need to move Thornton, where and for who can you see him going? I referenced San Jose & Colorado in my post because they really were the first two teams that I thought of. SJ has a ton of young players, maybe they'd send Marleau and someone for Joe and someone (with the 'someone' coming to Boston being better than the 'someone' going to SJ). Colorado wouldn't make a trade unless Forsberg really does go back to Sweden; they'd be desperate for a good #2 center and could maybe send one of their young guys, plus a D-man, for Thornton. Another potential deal would be a trade with Dallas, with the Stars sending Guerin back to Boston; they'd have to eat some of his salary, but it'd be a good move for both teams, as Dallas would add another good center to the mix, and Boston could put Guerin on the top line with Sergei & Nylander.
