Tell me why, Ripper. Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but the original record being desired was RETIRING UNDEFEATED WITHOUT LOSING - AND THEN STAYING RETIRED. Louis was undefeated, and then un-retired, and then lost. Meaning, he didn't set the record being sought. Speaking of losing confidence, I'm losing confidence in your ability to recognize those facts. I'll readily admit that Louis, in his prime, was probably better than Marciano, in his prime. But that doesn't mean that we can right revisionist history and pretend that Louis didn't lose. And, MikeSC, I hate to ask, but what does your post have to do with the one that you're quoting???

Detroit should move CuJo and just let Legace be the #1 goalie. Why have another year with a 30-something goalie that's eating $8-million of your salary? It's not like he's a proven winner (a la Brodeur or Roy) that's so much greater than the younger, less expensive option.

No ... Barry Bonds is the teat that ESPN likes to suckle it's milk from. Vick doesn't get nearly the adoration that BALCO Bonds does. If this poll was accurate (and not just a popularity contest) the athletes that went furthest would have been the triathletes, the pentathletes, the decathletes, etc. And throw in Armstrong for good measure, winning 5 Tours is pretty damn impressive. People like Bonds, Vick, Lewis, etc. shouldn't have gotten past the round of 32.

Since the show sucks, has for a while and barely makes you laugh, then why watch it at all? There are TONS of shows out there that suck in my opinion, and I just don't watch them. Should I have gone into that Friends thread with a post about "the show sucks, I hate it, it's barely funny"? I don't like the show, so I don't watch it. It's really quite simple.

I feel no shame. And stand by my statement: Louis lost fights. Marciano didn't. We're not arguing who was better ... we're stating who lost more.

I've also heard that the fact that Malarchuk was hurt while on the ice (compared to other sports played on a field or court) was instrumental in saving his life, something to do with the cold air/ice slowing the blood flow.

Rocky Marciano. 49-0. There it go. THERE IT GO. Everytime we get to talkin about boxing with a white man, they bring Rocky Marciano out they ass. "Rocky Marciano! Rocky Marciano!" Let me tell you something. Rocky Marciano was good. But compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano wasn't SHIT. If Louis hadn't come out of retirement, yes, you'd have a point Ripper ... but he didn't stay retired, he came back and he lost. The "record" being referred to was retiring undefeated, and staying retired. Thus, Joe Louis didn't set/tie/earn this record. Regardless of skin color. (won't mention that a younger Marciano whipped up on the older, slower, should have stayed retired Joe Louis)

Ha ha ha ha ... ha ha haha (oh, wait, he's being serious?!?) I don't know how you got so lucky, but we here in Boston normally pride ourselves on being rude, or at best disinterested in being nice. Must have been the nice weather. And it's funny how you mention that people never do that in Quebec, when I go to MTL or to the City, we tend to jaywalk a ton and never even think twice about getting smacked by a car. Yet, I really look twice in Boston before attempting the same thing. Grass is always greener, I guess.

There are remarkably few that I actually would want to meet and hang around with. Like Laz said, maybe it'd be cool to run across some of the other New Englanders, but since that could have been arranged a long ass time ago and never was, I ain't holding my breath on it coming to fruition any time soon. There are quite a few that I'd like to be a 'fly on the wall' to watch them live their lives, just to see if my web-conceived notions about them are accurate. (not naming names, most of these opinions are not flattering, and I have no desire to start a pissing match). I also don't know if I'm happy or sad that no one has any desire to meet me. Being a non-confrontational poster creates relative anonyminity, I guess.

It's a coach, not an athlete, but he did play in the NHL so he's a former athlete, and that has to count for something ... ... but my favorite all-time sports quote is Jim Schoenfeld yelling at Don Koharski in the hallways after yet-another poorly officiated playoff game. According to the stories, either Koharski (a) fell in the hallway and accused Schoeny of shoving him or (b) missed a call on the ice due to being on his ass. Either way, Schoenfeld screamed what is perhaps the greatest insult ever uttered at an official. "You fell. Have another doughnut, you fat pig".

Congrats to the Flames and their fans ... they've been on the outside looking in for so long, it's nice to see a good fanbase rewarded with a good playoff run. Can you imagine if the Leafs lose, leaving Calgary as the only CDN team in the conference finals? Talk about a long shot, I'd have guessed each other Canadian team was more likely to make it there than the Flames were. And I agree with Angle is God ... Detroit is just too old and slow at this point. The lockout might be a blessing in disguise for them, as some of the older guns will probably hang up the skates and force them to go younger. And, in my opinion, they should fire Lewis. To go from Bowman to him is like losing a Lexus and picking up a Yugo.

The movie is good, the book is great. Those of us that are fans of the book tend to like the movie by association. They're pretty much in a lose-lose situation: Either they make this movie very comparable to the original, and get shit on for just remaking (compared to re-invisioning) another movie. OR they make this movie too dissimilar from the original book, and then it'll be a fucking farce that doesn't deserve the name A Clockwork Orange.

I think he means message board people who like blood. Thanks, Spicy, that's exactly what I meant. I shouldn't have used (relatively) cryptic terms like "blood marks" without putting quotes around them, I guess. Even when I re-read it now, though, it still makes sense, but I might be crazy. And how can anyone say that American media over sensationalized this ... they'd have to report it in order to sensationalize it, and it's getting less attention then that ultra-exciting Detroit-Milwaukee NBA playoff series.

Why does the girl let herself be treated that way? She must have either been a complete whore-bag, or lost a bet or something. (did I hear someone say 'drugs' in the back of the room? Because I was thinking drugs, too). Having said all that, though, her ass was fine (must ... avoid ... saying ... 'hot' or 'smoking')

Everything that I've read about it makes it sound really bad ... even the blood-marks on the hockey fights boards are saying it's pretty bad. Unfortunately, though, all the video links that they post are dead, so I've yet to see it myself. And I hate to sound like a broken record, but the McSorley/Brashear 'incident' WAS NOT THAT BAD. There's been worse ones since then that have gone unrecognized, yet the love tap that McSorley gave Brash is what everyone remembers.

I think that TB will skate into the Cup easily, especially if TO can force a game 7. Neither the Flyers or the Leafs have the speed to keep up with the Lightning, and that will hurt them (see the Bruins grabbing their ankles vs. the Habs as an example). But, once TB gets to the Cup, they'll have to face a much faster Western Conference foe (most likely SJ or Calgary) and will have to play more than just a run-and-gun style. My bet is the Cup goes West once more.

New England Patriots: Pete Carroll ... yes, I remember the Rod Rust era (error would be more accurate) but Rust had horrible, horrible players and thus couldn't be blamed for the team's failures. Carroll was coach after a Super Bowl loss, and before 2 Super Bowl wins, so obviously had more talent to work with. The only positive thing that came from the Carroll days (daze?) was the fact that his "we're pumped and jacked" has become a common cliche among me and my friends. Boston Bruins: C'mon, Bruins fans, why the Keenen hate? He did exactly what he needed to, which is be a hard-ass that knocked the team in line. I never loved the man as a coach, but to say that he was the worst is a travesty. If MOC's one month at the end of last year ('02-'03) counts, I'd say him. But since he was just a GM keeping the coach's seat warm, I don't think that he counts, and will name Steve Kaspar instead. The team had reasonable talent then, and yet he got nothing out of them.

So, what'd you do while in Boston, then?

Finished as a Grammar God, but still think the test was crap. Many of those sentences were poorly structured and would have been avoided by most sane English speakers. Yes, I recognize that it was a test and thus the most 'difficult' of questions were posed, but they should have used a more standard way of speaking in order to make it a more accurate test.

Slapshot ... easily my favorite sports movie of all time, nothing else is even close. And, CDub, consider me a cold heartless bastard.

You know, there's countless shows that I don't like. Shows that either used to make me laugh (or never did) but are still on the air. And I've found an amazing way to avoid them ... I just don't fucking watch them. You don't find the show funny? Don't watch it. Change the channel. Read a book. Go online. It's not that difficult. I just don't understand how people get their panties in a knot over a show being on the air still. You don't like it, don't watch it. It doesn't take a MENSA member to avoid a 30 minute sitcom.

Sneakers: Saucony (black w/silver, grey w/blue) Casual Shoes: ALDO, Skechers, and also some random company that I can't think of the name of, but they sell kick-ass bulky black shoes with a buckle ... chick dig 'em. Dress Shoes: Alfani, Bass, ALDO

Ty Law's stats (on paper) are diminished because the other teams rarely throw his way. He's a shutdown corner, so the QBs tend to pick on the safeties or the other CB (which makes sense when it's Samuel, or O.T.I.S. or Ty Poole on the other side). It's hard to defend passes when they're not thrown your way. And pardon my chuckling at a Packers fan saying his team doesn't get much love. Yes, most of the attention goes to Favre, but I don't think anyone on the Pack gets overlooked at all.

Any truth to the rumor that St Louis shook Ribeiro's hand a bit too tightly during the post-game handshake and "Micky Ribs" floundered on the ice like a fish out of water?

I think it's the needed endurace and quickness that make soccer more difficult than golf. Plus, you do realize that anyone can play golf, right? (little kids, old people, fat people, etc) Using your own words (modified to fit the 'sport' in question): Anyone CAN play golf. That's why they let little kids do it. It doesn't even belong on the list. It's hitting a ball and then riding a cart after it...all day long. My presumption is you mean to say that golf takes more skill, but by the same token, the game of soccer being played by 7 year old girls is pretty dissimilar to the game being played by ManU or Arsenal. (I can say that even though I'm a pretty passionate soccer hater).
